Korg Modwave Review : Wavetable Sounds, Performance Techniques, and More!

Музыка

Our Pal Jacob shows us some of his whacky wavetables on the Korg Modwave!
The Modwave is Korg's newest keyboard synthesizer that takes a portion of DNA from the classic DW-8000 digital synthesizer.
Check out more on the Modwave here : bit.ly/3HtVsf7
"The Modwave is a thoroughly modern approach to wavetable synthesis unlike any other. Like the Wavestate and the Opsix before it, Modwave takes a classic method of synthesis and turns it on its head, adding in new features like Kaoss Physics and Motion Sequencing 2.0 to deliver vivid sonic textures with constant evolution, and is presented in a compact, 37-key package that punches well above its weight."

great tutorial! I wanted to know how the modwaves interface compared to the opsix and wavestate, and how well its features stood up against other digital synths - the Modal Argon, the Elektron stuff, etc. You did a fantastic job of showcasing its features. I feel like the modwave might be an interesting take on the modern hardware workstation.

Hello! loved the video! I had a question about the secuencer. I'm having trouble figuring out how to do secuences without them sounding like a continuous note, i cant put rest spaces like a conventional secuencer, if the note doesen't have sustain the secuence wont go on, that's just part of the synth right?

I've had my modwave almost a month now. So far I've uploaded a ton of wavetables from serum and waveedit already, as well as some freely available wav file wavetables. I Haven't quite tried uploading single cycle samples and wavetabling those yet, although that sounds like a really fun idea too. This is what I want to try next. Very easy to program, for me, so far . Although I've not used the sequencer too much yet.

For a more lengthy reply. Modwave is a smaller Hydra with some technically better specs on paper - but one that doesn't necessarily translate to anything in reality. They both float in the same spheres; however Hydrasynth is better packaged. Basically better build quality (a large margin there). Better keybed (another large margin as Hydra has Poly aftertouch - Korg has nothing here) and it has a far better user interface that can be readily approached and understood by anyone. (Personally I don't like the cramped screen of the Korgs. Hydra doesn't have better - it simply doesn't need it). As for Opsix. Since you mentioned it - it is one that is worth considering; depending upon your experience/knowledge of FM. It's totally different to the Modwave and Wavestate (both of these are designed by Korg USA) and is instead designed in Japan (the opsix). It's a small FM synth with 6 operators (hence the name) and besides the size (smaller and some don't like that) it can nail alot of the tones of the old king (The Yamaha Dx7). You can see alot of comparisons here on KZread for that. Dx7 vs Opsix. What opsix does well. Is make FM easier to understand and useable for a new generation. It still struggles with the build quality - but it is cheaper and sounds great. On the other hand - if you are experienced and wan't a deeper/better FM synth for the long term. I'd recommend looking at Yamaha's actual successor the MODX. It is far more powerful than opsix. Just harder to program and use (deeper). I understand some of these are more expensive and yes you get what you pay for. But Hydra prices on both the explorer and desktop are certainly competitive. I think personally I would use a hydra desktop along with a controller (but I use numerous different devices). Obviously if you are looking for a small keyboard device (many of us like more keys / 49+) then you might feel differently.

  • @BecomingProductions

You could make some, with third party oscillators to import wavetables, but it has nowhere near the same wavetable or sampling ability as the Modwave. It also has no sequencer at all. Thats not a knock on the Prologue because it has its own strengths like those awesome analogue oscillators and filter. Modwave is a very different synth though so pointless comparing them.

@@Farold_Haltermeyer Software is all messed up and Korg doesn't want to fix it or they cant fix it. The editor/librarian doesn't work for anybody anymore, it cant detect the device and there's no fix for it. From what I heard its a problem with the hardware so Korg is just gonna make a Modwave 2 cause they can't do anything about the original. Said it has to do with a windows update or whatever making it unable to detect the hardware. That's no good reason but maybe if you're on Mac it'll be alright. Most people just use it without the editor librarian but you need it to put more sounds and performances on it

@@Farold_Haltermeyer If you're talking about last month February then I haven't tried it but that took way too long for a problem they've had for well over a year. Aside from that it's annoying that the editor functionality isn't built in to the native app. The native plug in doesn't interface with the modwave at all anyways so there's no reason to not just buy that imo. It feels janky having to jump back and forth between them. Personally, im really just done with it. I get sick even looking at it at this point. The Kaos physics are the only you're getting thats worth the headache. It's good for having complete control of unique atmospheric sounds.

@@sluggy6074 gotcha, mucho appreciated. Am going to pick one up on loan first as all of what you say is a deal breaker...it’s infuriating when sample based synths don’t allow for direct sampling...a simple line-in for recording isn’t asking for much and removes all this need for iterations of support that will eventually make the synth redundant. But then I guess that leads most to buying the revised versions time after time. Cheers for elaborating, really helpful!

Despite the accolades, I've heard that the Modwave has one of the worst keybeds known to mankind. Can someone elaborate on this. An otherwise good synth can be compromised by a poor keybed. I loathe spending hundreds of dollars for a synth with a cheap, clacky, toy-like keybed!!
