Korg Kronos vs MODX/Montage: Which has the Ultimate Workflow?

In this video I compare the workflow of one task. Layering 3 sounds together on both the Yamaha MODX/Montage and laying on the Korg Kronos. Which one has the ultimate workflow and is easier to work with? You can decide after watching this short video.

Great video. I think you can select the category instead of the timber bank to get the sounds arranged in categories. This should be easier to navigate. The category is the row above the bank row you kept clicking. The whole process is easier starting from an uninitialised combination. Again, great video. Thank you

Nice video. Never played a Kronos but heard good things from it. The Kronos seems like hard work, especially for a new user. I love how easy the MODX is to do this, but i find it annoying that if you touch a sound part, even to mute it, it seems to play it no matter what until you touch on something else. A lot of button presses IMO.

Hi. Thanks for this video showing a different and key concern of musicians which is the playability. I have a MODX and scheduled to extend my gear to drum box and groove box or additional virtual analog synth. But I stopped and am using MODX for everything. Yamaha have made the best interfaces ever, my old PSR 730 bought in the 90's has already a great interface and screen. I think it is due to how this company learns from the users and respect them in taking care to improve again and again. Switching a preset or performance to another WITHOUT sound stop is on my top priorities, and few synths are offering. Jml is right in saying the MODX price is the right one, again a mark of respect. Korg and Roland are so disconnected to the public users market in Europe in playabiiity and price. If Yamaha would build a true analog synth (reissue to the CS80 - but lighter-?) I would consider immediately. Today there is no more comprehensive, portable and funny synth than the MODX at that price. If you have money go to the Montage for the metal, aftertouch and audio interface but plastic is not an issue with Yamaha, I never had a fail in 40 years!

I ended up hooking a powered USB hub to my Montage, and connected a Beatstep Pro and external 22" touch monitor. The CPU struggles with all of it sometimes, but it makes it a lot more comfortable to use. The Kronos looks like a beast, but I would probably get frustrated with the interface pretty quick.

Some of the Kronos engines have embedded effects, like the PolySix chorus, EP-1 stompboxes and amp/speaker sim, and CX3 leslie amp and speaker. Drums, pianos and most other acoustic instruments typically don’t need insert effects anyway.

I am aware of the embedded effects. I actually went over that extensively in another 1 hour video on my page entitled "Is the Korg Kronos Still Relevant?" It's a powerful feature. Blows the MODX out of the water IMHO. I will tell you in houses of worship the Piano, Pad and Strings layer is very very popular today and people need effects on those instruments. And often times, especially in African American churches you are called upon to play keyboards that are not yours and literally have 2 minutes before a song begins to create layers and splits. So getting to a desired outcome quickly becomes of paramount importance. I have been in that situation probably a few thousand times in my 20 years of playing for churches. I'd rather have a Montage in front of me than a Kronos. Though I am pretty quick with the Kronos too 🤔. 😂

The workflow is the only thing I don't like about my Kronos. I create combi's often enough that I move right through it. But when programming one of the 9 engines it annoys me that they are not laid out the same and don't have identical features. Karma is likewise so unbelievable powerful but very tricky when you go deeper than using canned patterns. Memory management is the worst. Just adding an expansion pack can be a nightmare the first time (or fifth time). But I still wouldn't trade it for anything on the market. I do hope Korg does better on the software in the future.

Not only is the patch easier to set up on the MODX, it gives you the new layer patches organized neatly by category. The Kronos shows you the raw banks, so you have to hunt down your patch among thousands of unsorted possibilities. That difference alone makes the MODX hugely easier, if you don't have the location and number of every patch memorized.

To be honest, you can select sounds by category on the Kronos too, look at 2:42, you can see the category names on the screen and I wonder that Darrick didn't use the same method. But two problems still remains with Korgs system: one is the fact that you have to carry the effects manually over. I understand Korg here, because you can use all the available effects equally in program mode, while Yamaha limits the number of insert effects to two. The other one is that every slot/part in Korgs initialized combination is on a different midi channel which doesn't make much sense and you have to manually change that to the global channel to hear the sound on that slot. Yamaha has solved this definitely better on the Montage/Modx. It remains to see what Korg will do in a future successor for the Kronos.

It all depends on whether you're a 'Yamaha' or "KORG' guy so to speak and you speak their language. Judging by this I would give a slight edge to the Kronos simply because I've used Korg keyboards before. But having said that however, I think both of them are pretty much a tie. The Montage seems pretty much identical to the Kronos in layering sounds for whatever situation (albeit obvious changed so the UI in both keyboards). As I said, it comes down to what YOU prefer. If you prefer the Montage, have at it. And if you prefer the Kronos, have at it too. I would say though if you're looking for a full blown workstation, go with the Kronos as the Montage is 'solely' a performance synthesizer in that it only has one mode and not the 6 in the Kronos, not to mention that the Montage only has 2 sound engines as opposed to the Kronos which has 9.

In Kronos you can easily copy a program incl. its effects and Karma into a combination. See page 504. “This command is available on every page in Combination mode. You didn’t mention the insane price, size and weight difference. I cart around my small, light MODX6 and a midi cable to plug into any old weighted keyboard might be available (to use it as a controller). It’s half the weight and less than half the price of the Kronos and if you compare it to the Krome EX, the MODX blows it away. Tip- I saved so much money on the MODX, I bought Organimation for it. Adds some very usable Hammond patches which is the weakest area of the MODX IMHO. I also do some more advanced stuff like using a midi router (an old iPad mini in my case) to gain access to ch 9-16 and make a killer dual keyboard rig using and ancient (and cheap) Casio Piano as a controller. This setup also gives me access to any iPad instrument, all with only 1 midi cable and 1 USB cable. The MODX acts as a sound module, a DAC, a midi interface and a mixer. All sounds come out 2 cables of the MODX. I have enough I/O to add a rack module if I want as well.

Totally agree jml79 as far as the sounds. Like many of the engines of the Kronos, I'm not incredibly impressed by them. The sample engine is very good on Kronos, but so is the one Yamaha offers in the MODX & Montage. The Kronos organ engine is a weak point. In order to get decent Hammond sounds on the Kronos, adding Organimation seem to be the best available. I see no evidence they sound any better in Kronos and on the MODX. However, they do take up some sample memory on the MODX which they don't on Kronos. An even better option, get a laptop or even an iPad Mini, and Hammond's own B-3X. Blows away the Kronos organs. I'm a huge fan of Korg's digital synths, but not their analog synths. It's ironic on a digital synth like Kronos, that Korg would leave out models of the world's best selling synths of all time, but model their analog synths, when the market is clearly looking for models of "the famous" analog synths from companies like Moog, Oberheim, ARP, Roland, Sequential & Yamaha. You can add them to a computer, and some of them to an iPad, but not Kronos. Even Korg!'s digital synths. That's the mind boggling thing.

If you're talking about workflow in terms of layering sounds, depending on where you are on this one, the MODX is probably the easiest although for me the KRONOS isn't that bad too by the looks of things. But if you're talking about workflow in terms of navigation, the KRONOS and Korg keyboards in general wins that one by a proverbial country mile. The layering aspect to be totally honest, I rarely use. I buy a synth “workstation “ to get everything done on that particular board if I can. The Kronos, which I have, has a different sound and workflow, which in turn affects how a tracks “feels” when it’s created on it, versus the Motif XF, which has a totally different feel AND sound. I just sold that board for the Montage a couple of days ago, and to ME, I think I made a huge mistake. Yamaha makes things so difficult for no reason at all; how do add a sequencer to this board and it’s this wack? Your comparison on the layering between them though is on point, you can do that all day with the quickness on the Montage, but you’ll go through hell and high water making a song on that joint...

I agree the screen is a bit small for so many parameters in kronos but if you use a pen for the screen, there is absolutely no problem selecting little tiny things. I do recommend using a cheap pen for kronos touch screen. Another thing about selecting sounds in kronos that you didn't show is the categories. A litter bit above where you click to choose sounds from the banks, you can click to open the categories. Also there is a powerful search engine. Clicking on the magnify glass opens the search dialog. All in all, it is a trade off between being easy to use and going deep into editing the sound and effects parameters. No other keyboard can even get close to kronos in terms of quality and functionality.

Having a "pen-like" object around that I have to keep picking up and putting down 100's of times during a creative session to select basic parameters messes up the whole "feel" of using hardware. I am aware of the category search and the magnifying glass search tools. The Montage has those same exact features and still managed to do it without having such a cramped screen. The Kronos is the most powerful hardware keyboard on the market. It's specs dwarf everything else. However basic tasks shouldn't be so unintuitive. The operating system shows the Kronos' age.

The MODX is fully compatible with the same sound collections as the Montage, and includes the same sounds. In a live performance, most people would struggle to hear the difference in the vast majority of sounds. I A/B compared the two going through the same keyboard amp, and could not hear a difference. The Montage does have a better DAC converter, but it would only be on really high end recordings that would make much of a difference. The keybed differences for people that play very serious piano that is the deal breaker for some. Other sounds are less of an issue. The Montage has 1.7 vs 1 gig of user memory, but it's still more than most keyboards provide. The MODX offers roughly 90% of what the Montage does for less than half the weight gigging, and less than half the cost. In the MODX6 format I have it can go in a back pack, and is also much more compact on stage or in your home, studio, rehearsal space, etc. Clearly, the best value in keyboards right now. And likely, still the best selling synthesizer in the USA.

WEll, it might be useful to pick out one particular narrow task and compare two vastly different machines. Would probably rephrase the question from "hich has ultimate workflow" to "which has simpler ways of achieving one small task"... Ultimate workflow in case of Kronos, where an entire album can be made from sound design & composing to burning onto CD a mastered end product, is by definition orders of magnitude higher *full* workflow, in the full sense of the word... However, beyond the mere fact that Kronos has full-blown workstation features and 9 synth engines one can even interconnect, it comes also with some complexity. If I compared constructing a combi on my 22 years old Korg N5 with my Kronos, the N5 would come out on top - as they are simply not comparable and the N5 is orders of magnitude simpler. It would not be a workflow, certainly not ultimate in any way, it would be 0.01% of a workflow that either machine is capable of.

I plan to do a series of videos so there is no need to change the title. I picked a common task that virtually all keyboardists utilize...layering. I picked common sounds that keyboard players layer together piano, pad, and strings. I am comparing the two latest flagships "workstation" (though I use that term loosely because the MODX is more of a performance synth with a sequencer lol) operating systems from two of the most respected manufacturers. This is no where near the comparison of the Korg N5 and a Korg Kronos. In fact many people who are looking to buy something are trying to decide between a Montage and a Kronos. Yes a person can produce a whole album on a Kronos and even burn a CD. But who is producing whole albums on workstations in 2020? Who is still burning CD's? I have multiple videos up in which I am raving about the Kronos or showing people how to operate say the PolySix Ex sound engine. It is the most powerful keyboard I own. I have read the entire 1100+ page manual. I love the Kronos BUT the operating system IS dated. It was in the Korg Oasys 15+ years ago. That's why a simple task of layering a few sounds together is more laborious not because of its complexity. I am pretty fast with it because I have had the Triton Studio, Extreme, and M50 but someone buying a keyboard today without any prior experience in Korg world will find some of its laborious tasks unnecessary. I couldn't even enter into a "category search" to copy a program into a combination with its effects. I had to either memorize the bank number, write it down or search for the program in program mode and then come back to combination mode to enter it in. That is not intuitive in 2020 sorry. And having nine sound engines, full blown sequencer, sampler, an SSD and everything else should not affect that. Workflow to most people means how your work flows. I had a pen and paper with the bank numbers written down and I felt like I needed a stylus. That is not a good flow in my opinion. That's all it is an opinion and I stated such. Comparing a Montage/MODX is not an apples to oranges comparison. And even if it was, it's what those in the market for a powerful synth are doing every day.

@@darrickkeels6387 thanks for the context, I couldn't initially figure out workflow term vs. the particular task/example. Kronos is in dire need of a UI update, certainly, now in a way it is continuous evolution from their previous UIs - for example, going from M3 to Kronos is superbly easy as the logic is the same and one is already used to the way in which they organised their stuff. Probably Triton etc users also find the logic similar, which can be a good but also a bad thing. With the Kronos complexity, this sgtarts to backfire - the complexity of it doesn't very well render itself to this tab-based and page-based approach. Probably as it was very much copied from OASYS with some tweaks and additions only. On the display aspect, something is quite off and not sure if it 's the surface or in need of calibration, as I am just using my fingernails when not reaching for stylus, and never had such wide discrepancies in intent vs. what it sensed. Fingers crossed it doesn't drift off in time, it could be ageing or who knows. Now on workflow, sure, CD etc, I mentioned in the sense of end-to-end workflow compared to certain specific tasks. Oddly as I moved between 2 points and took my M3 then my Kronos with me, I had to sometimes do entire album on it as it essentially moved with me the entire studio workflow - and only sampled in other synths for the tracks. It might not be how most do things now, but in terms of full workflow, for me it was surreally and unexpectedly powerful - just a laptop with DAW for the MIDI arrangements that Kronos sequencer could drive humans up the wall with :), as they decided to cut out myriad features from the M3 sequencer (doh....).

MODX still easier to do layering but also on the Kronos you could use quick layer in Combination mode to add the pad and quick layer again to add the strings. By using quick layer the effects are imported too.

I think where the MODX has the advantage is in the fact that it doesn't have "modes." You are always in "performance mode." The Kronos has a program mode and a combination mode. When Roland launched the Fantom, they adopted Yamaha's model and got rid of their "modes" too. I believe manufacturers are really going to be forced to keep their complexity without sacrificing simplicity. This next generation of keyboardists have grown up with cellphones that can perform very complicated tasks in a simple way. When my son operates the Kronos or MODX he looks like he is using cranks and levers. The dated workflows show when a person unaccustomed to this way of working is at the helm.

Is yamaha paying you? 😆 jk if I want a three-layer Combi I would change the channels from two and three to 1 the first time around? Why wait and change two then go back and change three. It seems like you're making it look more work than it has to be. And if I catch myself needing to layer a bunch of sounds I could save a Combi preset thayts already has all of the channels change to one and mute all the channels except for Channel One. And at any time I want to stack more sounds. All I need to do is hit unmute and not have to go and change the channels every time. Sometimes it's not the gear it's the user

  • @darrickkeels6387

    @darrickkeels6387

It's still easier in the MODX because Combi mode and Program mode are not separate. Also is it easier to have your insert effects right away in the MODX. The is no "copy from program" needed. Also the reason why I did not change all to the channels to 01G at once is because sometimes the user doesn't know at the onset how many channels they will ultimately use. So if you are experimenting you end up changing them one at a time. And yes I know you can save combi's, mute and unmute etc the same can be done on the Yamaha. The bottom line is no matter how you do it, the Yamaha takes less steps to accomplish the exact same task. Simply touch a channel and touch an instrument. It will be there complete with its effects. There is no switching anything to a global channel, there is no copying from program mode, and the layout gives your fingers more room to press the screen accurately. So...no it is not the user. It is the user interface.

The MODX is actually very powerful. Remember it has the same operating system, effects, samples, and touch screen as the Yamaha Montage. Granted the Korg Kronos is more powerful but I am simply comparing the workflows of the two machines. Lastly using an S Pen or stylus when creating music kind of takes me out of my creative mindset as a keyboardist. At that point I would rather just work with software and use a computer, controller, mouse and keyboard.

The MODX is a powerful machine compared to most synthesizers. The Kronos may have more engines, but ask yourself, does it have the engines "you want" ? My answer was.....No, but I still have most of those engines anyway...in my laptop. And I've generally found they don't really do want I want. So instead, I've added all the other engines I really wanted and that I would think "most people would want" like a MiniMoog, Prophet V, Oberheim, Korg M1, Korg Kronos, D50, Jupiter 8, ARP 2600, Mellotron and a "good quality B3 / Leslie" all in my laptop, which I'd still need to do even if I had a Kronos. A MODX in combination with a laptop running countless more synth models "you actually want" blows away the Kronos. It is also far more portable, more compact and more economical. The winning combination. But I also have, a sample collection of all Kronos presets if I really wanted to use some Kronos sounds in addition.

@@noelvijay6894 MODX paired with a laptop full of “desirable” modeled engines of synths like Moog, Oberheim ARP, Prophet, Hammond and tons of others beats Kronos by a mile, is way easier to transport and the money left over from buying MODX instead of Kronos should pay for a decent laptop and the synth engines. Who’s the kid now? I’d say the Kronos with it’s mere 9 engines, most of which I already have in my laptop. Even the Kronos factory patches I have in my laptop, and the laptop provides unlimited sample space. I’d buy a Kronos if I wanted to be limited to only those engines, which I find greatly inferior to the ones I have, and if I wanted to break my back still carrying heavy keyboards to gigs as I did for years, and if I felt like spending more than twice as much money. MODX can run Montage, MOTIF & DX7,TX816,TX802 libraries. Those choices alone likely give me more suitable patches for the classic 80s /70s music I play vs the ones available for Kronos, which can’t tap into Korg’s previous flagship libraries (Triton) unlike Yamaha who was smart in recognizing the importance of retaining numerous sound collections from the previous best selling synth series. But if I want a factory Kronos X patch, I can just load it on the laptop.
