That mouth-pointing is quite a fact that I can't deny. But I once remembered a teacher of mine said that "Pag bago ka sa isang lugar, tapos nanghingi ka ng direction from an Ipileño towards a specific place, if they point with their fingers, it's only nearby. But if they use their mouths, expect that that place you're referring to is at least half a kilometer away." 🤣🤣

In terms of formality, the other thing Filipinos do is change the pronoun we use. We use 2nd Person Singular ("Mo/ka/ikaw" in Tagalog, meaning "You" in English) which is like no ending (안녕). We use 2nd Person Plural ("ninyo/kayo" meaning "y'all" in English) which is like -요. Then the highest level is 3rd person plural ("nila/sila" meaning "them"/they") , which is like -입니다/-입니까. This happens in other Philippine languages. On another note, considering the other island SEA countries have the mano, most likely the mano predated the idea of receiving blessings in the Christian sense and only took on that meaning with colonization. In Indonesia, sometimes the nose is used instead of the forehead, so there possibly may be a connection to the "ungungo" (snifffy kiss where the nose touches the cheek) and the hongi (the Polynesian nose to nose gesture in Moana) due to shared origins.

I agree, esp with the 2nd point. In Kapampangan, we don't even call it "mano" ("hand" in spanish), instead we call it "Siklod/Pamanyiklod". It's also the word that we use for "Kneel/ to kneel". The "Blessing" part to it I also think is just an added meaning from Christianity, since elders typically reply "Sopan na ka ning Apung Guinu" (trans. "The Lord help you") whenever we reach out for their hand to do "siklod".

I just realized this, we do change pronouns for formality. E.g. Who are you looking for? - Sino hinahanap mo? - is usually for people close to you, friends or families Sino hinahanap nyo/ninyo/nila? - is used for strangers and elders.

I doubt there were talking about the same meaning of "utang na loob". Dept of gratitude in the Philippines is rooted in our culture, it is like an invisible bond that tied us to someone NOT just so we can pay them back in the end. Its hard to explain. Its so different to the point it can be so toxic sometimes

The teleseryes definitely show the toxic side of “Utang na loob” 😂. But it’s true, it means more than just sharing food. It’s about receiving help of any kind and making sure you pay it back. It’s very in our nature to give back after we’ve received something.

in "utang na loob" yes, it has similarities but for Filipinos it has deeper and significant level of interpretation.

Utang na loob sa mga pilipino is hindi nababayaran kahit gaano kalaking halaga.pag tanaw ng utang na loob ang pwede isukli jan respeto paggalang..kahit kailan kasi di mababayaran ng halaga ang utang na loob sa isang tao.

Po and opo is only for tagalog speakers. We should not forget as well that filipinos are not just the tagalogs. We have more than 1h languages in the country and we have various tribes; that would make a lot of differences & similarities of some practices, traits, traditions, norms, languages & whatnot. another edit: FILIPINO CULTURE IS HUGE. IT IS NOT JUST ABOUT NCR/METRO MANILA.

I think it's more accurate to say that the use of po/opo is more of a thing for Lowlander ethnic groups in Luzon? (e.g. Tagalog, Ilocano, Kapampangan, Bicolano etc.) since this is basically an influence coming from Minan Chinese (brought by chinese migrants ofc) and it isn't really something native in origin. People from VisMin did not seem to adapt this from their chinese migrants, (although there's a lot of them esp. in Cebu) which I find really interesting. 😃

In Bisaya, we don't have po and opo. I only use it when I speak in Tagalog/Filipino which is rare. So most of the time I forget to use it.

Filipino use Po and Ho.. “Po” mostly use for someones basically older than you but if someones really old like grandparents, “Ho” is a use to it but not necessary.. but in other provinces they don’t have honorific particle, they’ve just use name title to it but here in Bicol region they use “tabi” as po which is interesting.. actually we also sometimes change the word for formality like changing the singular to plural even we’re talking to you alone.. Ex: Asan ka na? - Asan na po/ho kayo? Ikaw lang nandito? - Kayo lang po/ho nandito? Sa’yo ba to? - Sa inyo po/ho ba to? And about the “kain tayo” culture its not basically a food invitation it’s rather acknowledging someone’s presence while your eating cause when you don’t say it, they’ve think you’re too greedy or look “ patay gutom” which is a bad manner cause you din’t even recognize someone because of food yeah thats the sense of it

Now that you've mentioned "Ho" i kinda feel like it was the same as what they have, "Ho" for me can be either taken as respectful or disrespectful depending on the intonation or delivery of the speaker. I'd say its the less respectful way to address your respect or point. I also think that "Ho" was mostly used by the elders, or some used it to address respect for the elders.

I agree with you, "kain tayo" for me is like more of an respecting their presence or to make them feel noticed, but I also agree that it will be more awkward if I'd say "kain tayo" if there's only a food for 1 person, maybe its because "kain tayo" still means invitation to eat.

Utang na loob is not just giving back gratitude... you're likely connected to the other person and paying back that gratitude for the rest of your life.

"Utang na loob" can be a double edge sword. Puede kang tulongan and they won't expect any return. Most though, expect that you return the favor. There's a saying that if you want to help others, don't expect anything in return. Otherwise, you'll just be disappointed if they don't.

cebuano does not have honorific but we used different cebuano keywords to said it " formal" like english formal and informal conversation

As from "YAWALAND" Po/Opo is not our thing hehe

Since #tagalog is the main language, all filipinos that not tagalog speaker automatically use po and opo whenever they goes to Manila.. Me as a muslim with iranon tribe who live in Quezon City, I either greet my fellow moro with arabic but if it's elder, physical contact is must like kissing their forehead or a hug. But still, we're all filipinos so we automatically say po and opo since I live here in QC. This is run by a tagalog content creator so ofc they will highlight the culture of mainstream filipino which is Luzon's culture. If they dive more, Moro/muslim culture (also the minority tribes like Ifugao, Igorot, bajao, etc) is our ancient culture which is similar to Indo/Malaysia. Right now, we're always highlighting the modern filipino culture which mostly came from Spanish but we forgetting our own roots and our old cultures. I don't see the content creator gonna introduce other filipino cultures, different flavor of foods, languages, etc but if he read this then please introduce the other cultures because we're also Filipinos not just tagalog.

"Po" and "Opo" is only for the Tagalog speakers mostly they're from Luzon Island. Philippines has 187 languages and thousands of tribes. Me as a Bisaya who speaks "Cebuano" from Mindanao island we don't have Po and Opo we just say "O and Ou". Filipinos always has a hand gestures which we adopt from Spaniards just like Latinas or Mexicans we do the Hand gesture like pointing finger on you or hand movement everytime we talk to express our emotions or information.

I think you misunderstood the meaning of "Utang na loob" the "Utang na loob" cannot repay or return easily like for example to our parents even your own life is not enough for this. Only God can pay it back or return to the person you owe. Utang na loob is different from "Utang" only There's a saying " Ang naaawa at tumutulong sa dukha ay nagpapautang sa Panginoon at ang Panginoon ang magbabalik sa kanya.

Pagsinabi kasi utang na loob its internal debt pero ayaw namin mag kautang na loob dahil mahirap maibalik yun.

Idk about this but maybe the culture of getting into a relationship in ph vs sk? I feel like i want to know deeper about this, the traditional way. I'm already aware about courtship here, but i'm pretty sure they have a custom there as well. Or is it just what we usually see in historical kdramas? I'm still curious tho. Yung online friend ko kasi noong una pa lang chat namin casual lang talaga yung wika na ginagamit namin sa isa't isa and then nung nagtanungan na ng age, mas matanda pala ako sa kaniya ng Isang year. Tapos nagsorry siya bigla at bigla nang nagsalita with 'po' and tinawag niya na akong ate. I said na ok lang at she can speak casually sa'kin pero di daw siya sanay hahaha. Pakiramdam ko tuloy nagkaroon ng invisible line sa pagitan namin because of age-difference. I don't like that feeling pero hinayaan ko na lang hahaha. Share ko lang po

In my case, same ako sa friend mo na nagsasabi ng po kahit maliit lang ang age gap. In my opinion, pwedeng strict ang parents since ganyan ang case ko. Pag nakakalimutan kong magpo sa matatanda, pinapagalitan nila ako. So tinatandaan ko na palaging magpo. Dahil nasanay ako dun, kahit sa mga friends kong di ganun katanda, masyado akong nagiging formal, and mahirap talagang alisin sa una. Pero in the end nawala na rin yun.

utang na loob just feels deeper in meaning, it's honestly difficult to explain it. like, ang pagtanaw ng utang na loob ay minsan umaabot pa ng ilang generation. halimbawa, may mga kasambahay na sobrang tagal nang naninilbihan sa isang pamilya, minsan yung mga magiging anak nila sa future, maninilbihan din sa pamilyang yon. hindi lang siya simpleng paghuhugas ng pinggan kapag nakikitira ka sa bahay ng iba. deeper connection siya na mababayaran lang through loyalty. yon lang hehe.

How about ho ang oho. Ginagamit din natin yan bilang respect.
