the U.S. just has better stand up comedy. Especially since the crowd isn't as touchy. I like Kevin Heart, Kurtis Conner, Dave Chappelle, John Mulaney, and Chris Rock

Theyre taking some of these jokes too literally 😂. You don't have to think of them as real stories, just have fun listening to the way the comedian tells it

Yea, the problem too many people have is they think they're literal stories and not just made up scenarios to make a joke

Kevin Hart is funny if you understand English, mannerisms of english, black mannerisms, etc... Otherwise just reading what he is saying will not hit the same.

yh, idk if it's a cultural difference, but his teacher disrespected him so in this context his disrespect was appropriate, and most Americans would think so too. Plus, his insults were hilarious, but I think in Korean they don't really insult others in such a way

No, Kevin Hart is not funny at all.

i think the only thing koreans can joke about is sex because its such a taboo topic to them. while in other countries, they can joke about how others act, look, or even talk, basically everything else in the world besides sex.

nah it's just because stand up is still in its baby stages in Korea. My country went through the same thing where initially, most stand-ups did whole sets about sex and sexual stuff because it was shocking and the first time we were hearing sex being described like that but as stand-up has evolved and grown pretty huge over here, sex isn't really the focal point of most comedy anymore even though sex as a topic still remains taboo for us societally...top comedians here have branched off to all kinds of topics that are sometimes even too niche, but now we have experience as audiences and know exactly how to act and what to expect at one of these shows...Korean stand-ups will also start doing more observational stuff about other heavy topics like politics, religion and societal issues when they build a big enough audience that would protect them from people that might get offended..

But they are comparing American Stand up specials to Korean improv sets. Even most US improv sets are about Sex because it's the easiest thing to get laughs from.

@@Carlos-ix2nm i never said that op was wrong, just that the audiences that watch comedy mature over time even if the society there doesn't..so really, what topics comics choose to talk about doesn't have much to do with what is taboo and what is not taboo..

For Kevin's second stand-up, the joke wasn't the cussing, it was just taking liberties when your parents give you a simple instruction.

Well the comedy skit where kevin cursed alot was the point of his joke. The premise was that he interpreted as a kid that his mom gave him permission to curse one time. So his kid mind thought he could only had that one opportunity that his mom let slide. So he took full advantage of that opportunity. 😂😂

8:34 she really is conservative because that whole show was one of Kevin Heart's best. I've watched that comedy show so many times since I was a kid, I've lost count how many times I've seen that clip and it never fails to make me laugh🤣

Different cultures, Its not just the cussing I feel like they don't really relate to the story ....same as I don't really relate to the Korean comedians, feel like most of the Korean comedians their jokes were corny.

I never even considered if other cultures had stand up comedy before this. Now that I think abt it, I’ve only seen Korean comedians on shows like gag con or SNL Korea. Never would’ve imagined that stand up comedy wasn’t a thing for them.

It kinda doesn’t surprise me bc I beieve there are so many Koreans striving to be comedians, especially back then.

As soon as they get used to the fact that stand up has almost no boundries no topic or person in the room is safe. I think it will be a hit there. You have to be able to laugh at yourself, take nothing personal and just enjoy the humor in everything. Its often Adult humor too the more shocking the better.

They would never show Richard Pryor, George Carlin, or Eddie Murphy, and especially Red Foxx.

i think standup comedy is hard to translate. it's important that the audience speaks the same language and has knowledge of the culture from which the standup comedian comes from, if you have to read what they're saying it immediately loses it's punch. of course it can still be funny, but like in the case of the korean girls not getting kevin hart's swearing at the teacher bit, they didn't get it because they either don't know the language or the culture well enough to get the greater meaning beyond just what he's saying..

If they find the Korean porn joke "intense" then they are not ready for American comedy. HUGE cultural difference.

I’m Korean American and I’ve grown up on American style stand-up comedy. If I were to choose between the two? I prefer American style stand-up comedy more. I’ve lived in Korea for more than 15 years now and I’m so glad to see that stand-up comedy in Korea is slowly but steadily growing popularity in Korea.

Its so nice seeing them interacting with the Western culture too!

That Jo Koy bit ALWAYS makes me crack up! Including when he mimics other Asian accents, or when he talks about his mom!

During the whole Korean act I wasn't shocked at all by the "vulgar" manner of talking 😭 I'm just so used to it in the US that it's not even funny anymore or surprising. I was like: wow, so tame! The 10 year olds down the street be saying the same things 🤔(Who gave those kids phones...)

It's so bizarre to me to see people get so shocked by cuss words or sexual jokes, especially in a stand up comedy context where things aren't supposed to be taken seriously. Culture shock lol

I'm a huge fan of standup comedy and American comedians like to talk about difficult topics since the whole premise of stand up comedy is "no boundary". They talk about everything and heavy topics like politics, racism, school shooting, etc can be easier to talk about if the comedian is good with their jokes. I think that's what Korean stand up comedian in the clips were also doing. since sexual conversation is quite taboo or difficult to talk about in general, they make stand up comedy as kind of like a safe space to joke about it.

I'd really love to see them watch different comedians (Taylor Tomilson, preacher lawson, etc) because there's such a wide range of comedians that you can't really get by watching only a couple. ^⁠_⁠^

Yeah they actually made me cringe a lil cause there wasn’t much cleverness in the delivery and punchlines

kevin hart is the best!!! I used to watch all his stand up shows/movies in middle school and he never failed to make me laugh!! in school everyone knew his lines

Stand up Comedians often rely on nuance and delivery of their jokes. So it would make sense that Kevin Hart and JoKoy arent as funny to them, but here in America they are some of our top tier comedians

I had a bit mixed feelings about the Korean stand up comedians. While the jokes did get some laughs out of me I was constantly on edge cause we know how conservative many men in Korea are so I don't know if they will end up saying something that is misogynistic in my eyes since they did do only sex jokes. Also I prefer if there are only a few sex jokes in between, not the whole show. But I guess it's normal that people who are still new to stand up start with taboo topics which is literally sex in Korea.

I think the language barrier had them confused on the Kevin hart teacher one. They didn’t know the joke was about letting him say 2 little cuss words and he went to school and said all the worst ones he could think of 😂

There is a comedian named Fluffy, and his are pretty wholesome. His is really funny and I think they would love his type of comedy.

kevin is good, but for non-american audiences, sometimes, you can find it hard to related the context. the most international-friendly one is Fluffy i guess. Jeff dunham my favourite

There are levels to stand-up comedy. Especially, across cultures such as Def Comedy Jam era would have been too much for them to handle. Maybe compare SNL vs. SNL Korea

I think KH is an AMAZING storyteller, and he can effortlessly hook you up in anything he's saying (': ! It's not just punchline punchline punchline, but I literally burst out and cried laughing AGAIN just from the short excerpts they shown (': ... For the fiest Korean comic, the using your mom's ID to watch adult movies felt very tame, but it made me smile and I could see how culturally fitting his sets were compared to the rest. (:

I liked seeing what Korean stand-up is like - I've often wondered what type of humour is used. But I'm severely disappointed that there isn't a single comedienne in this entire video. For anyone who's curious, Iliza Shlesinger, Taylor Tomlinson, Wanda Sykes, Fortune Feimster and Tig Notaro are must-watch entertainers in my opinion! 😉

It’s cause they don’t understand Kevin’s mannerisms and the way he talks and just everything. You need to really understand to find something funny fr. Just reading won’t hit the same😂

Danny Cho is really underrated. His podcast is funny too.

I've been waiting & hoping for a long time, for them to watch Bobby Lee. It would be best if it wasn't just his stand-up though, it's more his general attitude/humour.

I feel like a significant amount of that Kevin Hart time could've been swapped for the rest of that Jo Koy clip. The segment, I found, was extremely hilarious especially if you watched from start to finish. Those clips for Kevin weren't nearly as funny for the chunk of time they took (no malice intended) Also I would LOVE to see Preacher Lawson on here

jo koy's humor is the "it's funny because it's true" kind. you can't even be mad at it because it's just true.

Ahh i see the problem, they really took everything seriously. Most of stand up comedian material are made up or exaggerated, so you just enjoy the sheer absurdity of it. As long as you understand that, i think you can enjoy every standup no matter from which countries it is.

Funny enough, when i think about which comedian are easier to translate their material for other countries to enjoy, i can only name one, its Jeselnik. You dont need to live in the US or even understand the language to enjoy a good ol simple build up punchline comedy like his.

Wish you showed some UK stand up too! It’s a different breed of offensive haha

As a westerner, Korean is a very emotional language. It can convey deep emotions, with just one or two words. I love the Korean language.

Glad they enjoyed lol, also we do tend to use more swear words just as a way of expressing ourselves so hopefully they can look past that and enjoy the jokes

OK but the Taegeuk joke had me DYING!

People say Stand Up Comedy is about no bounds jokes, but to me I've always felt it was a balance of trying to do social commentary in a way that makes people think while laughing; much like other artforms I suppose. Maybe it's why I do like the idea of this video, but wish there was other comedians besides Kevin Hart's, since his jokes would largely be about things relating to his pov on the world. I think if there's ever a second part to this, having more varied stand up acts from time eras would be as beneficial as taking race into account.

It is interesting how a lot of korean comedies have a slightly different kind of humor, but standup feels relatively similar between the two.

Oh Lord you have to show them more comedy bits/comedians. My recommendations would be Billy Gardell, Robin Williams, Gabriel Iglesias (the Racist Gift basket story) and Tracy Morgan's most recent Netflix special Staying Alive. For starters. ;)

I think comedy is super cultural, it’s really hard to be “in on the joke” when you don’t deeply understand the language and mannerisms, just another reason to want to learn about other cultures!!!! ❤

I think I liked the American jokes more because they talked about diverse topics (ostriches, teachers, accents), but every single one of the Korean comedians only talked about sex, sex and sex! Maybe it’s just the people that you picked and there’s actually a wider variety among the Korean comedians, but the sex jokes are too crude to be funny for me
