이번 영상은 저희 채널의 다른 영상들과 많은 차이가 있어요. 촬영하는 와중에 브리자디어님이 70년 전에 한국에 갔을 때 한국식 바비큐를 먹은 적이 없으시다는 걸 알았는데요, 그래서 더욱더 전쟁 후에 발전한 한국의 맛있는 음식을 경험하게 해드리고 싶었어요. 하지만 맛있는 한국 음식을 먹으면서 이야기를 들을수록 브리자디어님의 이야기들에 집중하게 되었고 음식에는 포커스가 덜 맞춰졌어요. 너무도 감사하게도 브리자디어님이 음식들을 다 맛있게 좋아하면서 드셨지만, 저희에게 큰 임팩트와 여운을 남긴 건 그분의 진심과 영국 군인의 관점에서 본 저희 태어나기도 전의 한국이었어요. This video is quite different to any other on our channel. We found out while filming that despite going to Korea 70 years ago, the Brigadier had never tried Korean BBQ before. We obviously wanted to give him an amazing experience of Korean food and show him a small part of Korea's incredible development since the war, but as we shared this lovely Korean meal with him the food became less of a focus as he generously shared some of his story with us. He was extremely complimentary of everything he ate and tried, and he seemed to be genuinely enjoying himself, but what really left an impact on us was his honesty and insight as a British soldier who saw Korea long before we were ever born.

중국인들은 그렇게 생각지 않을걸요. 5년전 웰링턴 국립묘지에서 중국인들을 만났는데 그곳에 새겨진 내용을 보고 서로 당황한 기색으로 토론하고 있더군요. 아니 한국전쟁이 북한과 중공이 쳐들어 간거라고? 그들은 그렇게 배우지 못했거든요... 저는 듣고만 있었지요. 제 전공은 중국어와 문학입니다.

When Brian the brigadier talked about how he shared cigarettes with the chinese soldiers after the ceasefire and said soldiers hadn’t start the war, i teared up. The anecdote reminds me of the book Slaughterhouse 5 (by Kurt Vonnegut) and how all wars are childrens crusades. Loved this episode. Thanks.

대부분의 한국 사람들은 한국을 위해 싸운 모든 참전용사들에게 감사한 마음을 가지고 있다. 비록 시간이 많이 지났지만 여전히 많은 사람들이 기억한다.

"Soldiers don't start wars. Somebody else says start a war. Somebody else says stop it." Despite the topic of the video being a heavy one, exceptionally for us Koreans, I appreciate how the Brigadier explained his perspective of the war in a very comprehensible and lighthearted way. Thank you for your service and wonderful insight.

My late father was a colonel of 6th Div. of Korean Army during the Korean War and he would often told me about the Korean war and friendships with allied forces like British and U.S. Coincidence or not, some 40 years later I finished my military service in the 25th Div. of ROK army near Seolma-ri, where, perhaps near the battle field of your account, lots of British infantry servicemen sacrificed themselves to defend Korea against communist North and China. Now I am turning into my 50s to find out your story thanks to 영국남자(Thanks Ollie and friends!) Words can't convey my appreciation enough for you, Sir. Here's my cordial, utmost and sincere respect from the bottom of my heart. Thank you and Long live Brigadier General, Sir!

"Soldiers don't start war." That hits hard. And i love it when the video's going all emotional and stuff, he joked about how he's the only one left and that he can take all the glory for himself. Such a humble soul.

After my military service was over, I went back to a country to finish studying. There I met an old gentleman wondering where I was from. I said Korea, and he told me that he fought in Korean War. When I heard that, I didn't have any single second to think, but just stood up, saluted him, and expressed my deepest appreciation from bottom of my heart. I believe that's what all Koreans watching this video would feel like. Thank you all for what you have done. You might say that you only did what was right, but that just means so much to us.

When he was being thanked, he kept saying the same thing that other members of regiment would be looking at him and saying “bullshiting bastard” He seems genuinely concerned about getting all the credit to himself. He is humble, for sure, but it’s not only that. He feels sorry for his colleagues not being here together and he misses them so much. I also got the impression that he didn’t want us(Koreans) to feel sorry that a lot of his colleagues were killed during the war. I guess that’s why he used humorous tones. It was funny and bitter. And I genuinely thank you and all the other soldiers for risking their young lives to defend our freedom.

Thank you for bringing this gentleman to tell his side of the story. If we do not hear and learn from those who've been there, we lose history. He was such a delight to listen to and learn from.

Oh, he's such a darling! His sense of comedic timing, when to lighten the mood, was so well balanced with his heartfelt humility and appreciation for what he and his peers accomplished. Laughing about his troop cussing him out unable to tell their version of events, asking if Grace was having a double gin after making her cry when he praised you guys for your work bridging cultural gaps - what a gentleman.

분명, 한국전쟁에 대한 한국인이 모르는 사람이 없을것이고, 그 중에 수 많은 외국인들의 참전과 희생으로 대한민국은 지켜졌다는걸 알고 또 알았음에도 이런 참전 용사분들의 이야기를 들을때 마다 눈물이 나는건 어쩔수 없는 것 같습니다. '원치않던 전쟁의 침략으로 인해 이들을 해방 시키는 것이 분명히 옳다고 생각해서 모두들 당연하다고 생각했죠!' 라는 말씀에 눈물이 왈칵~ 정말 감사하고 존경의 마음을 담아 이글을 써봅니다.

This was a very touching interview. My grandfather survived the Korean War and he told me stories about camaraderie between the Korean and Chinese soldiers, and of loss (And never failed to mention how pretty the Korean nurses were). He passed away a few years ago, and I miss him dearly. Listening to this interview just enforced my understanding of how important the war was to South Koreans and the way they are able to live today.

@@hhhkkkccc4106 물론 한국군이 잘 싸운건 맞지만 사상자가 적은 가장큰 이유는 미군처럼 전방에서 대규모로 전투를 거의 치르지 않았기 때문입니다 물론 짜빈동 전투같은 경우도 있긴하지만 이런 예외적인 전투를 제외하고는 대부분 소규모의 전투에 투입되었습니다 주월한국군은 주로 수비적인임무나 게릴라토벌작전에 투입되었고 당연히 사상자는 미군에 비해서 상대적으로 적게나올수밖에 없는것이죠

옳은 일이라는 신념을 가지고 참전했지만.. 전쟁의 참혹성에 대해 말씀하실 때와 옆에 있던 두 동료를 잃으셨다는 말씀을 하실 때 아직도 후유증을 간직하고 계신 것이 보이는 것 같아 안타깝습니다.. 하나의 영혼이 이 세상의 어떤 것보다도 소중하다는 것을 알았더라면 전쟁은 일어나지 않았을텐데..

한국전 당시 참가한 외국 군인들중 한국이란 나라가 어디있는지 존재자체도 잘 몰랐을텐데... 인간의 가치 중 자유란걸 지키기위해 그 조그만한 나라를 지켜주기 위해 목숨을 걸수있다니... 진심으로 존경합니다. 감사하고... 건강하시길 빕니다.

So true.. so true.

The most impressive part is that he returned his honor to the young Korean soldiers. It is such a humble and dignified spirit. This admirable attitude makes me look back on my life and decide to live for others who need my help. Like him, I want to tell myself I have been living for the right thing when I get old.

My father was a British sergeant in Korea and every time we go to a Korean restaurant in the UK, they give him (us) food for half price. They occasionally invite veterans over for various celebrations, and the respect they have for them is pretty enormous.

We must protect Brian at all costs. Even though he was laughing and joking and he said he would take all the glory, only he knows how it feels to be the only officer left from 38..

공감합니다. 그런면에서 나라를 지키고자 하는 한국과의 반대 사례로 이번 아프칸 사태가 있지요. 천문학적인 돈을 들이고 우수 인력을 파견하여 기술을 가르키고 재건을 도와줘도 내부의 적폐들이 부정부패를 저지르고 달아나니 결국은 다 헛소용이더라는 현실을 목도했지요.

미국이 지원한 베트남공화국은 부패해서 베트남전쟁때 패망하고, 수많은 보트피플 난민이 유랑생활을 했음. 미국군인들이 전사를 많이한 베트남전쟁.

My grandpa fought in Korea as well, he sadly passed away 2 years ago. But watching this video it really reminds me of him. Thank you.

밀리터리에 관심이 많아서 관련 글들 많이 보는편인데 625 해외참전용사분들중에 분단된체 휴전된것에 대해 '자신들의 의무를 다하지 못했다'고 안타까워 하신분들의 인터뷰를 몇 건 더 본적이 있긴합니다 근데 다시 찾아보려 해봐도 검색이 되질 않네요 ㅠ.ㅠ

My father and my uncle fought in the Korean War. They never talked about anything they saw or did so it was impactful to hear a firsthand account. Thank you for this experience. I believe this was one of my favorite episodes.

Both my grandfather's were in the Korean war. They never talk about it and have never had Korean food. They were both drafted. Thank you to everyone from every country that served in the war. It is a war that is not talked about but has made a big impact on a lot of people.

저도 감동 받았습니다. 눈물이 나네요 난 정말 인간같지도 않은 댓글들을 가끔 봅니다. 자기들이 자기나라의 유익을 위해서 왔지 우리를 위해 왔냐? 미국이? 영국이? 이런 글들이 마음을 아프게 합니다. 영상에서 할아버지가 이 대목에서 너무 감동했습니다. 개인 뿐아니라 미국이란 나라, 영국이란 나라도 공산주의의 마수로부터 자유를 지키는 선한 일이었기에 우리나라에 파병이라는 결단을 내렸다는 것을 의심치 않습니다. 왜? 그게 그들의 가치관 이기 때문입니다.

젊은 나이에 이국땅 대한민국에서 헌신함에 존경과 경의를 표합니다. 당신이 있어 대한민국은 이렇게 성장했고 심지어 선진국이 되어 공여를 받던 나라가 이제 공여국이 되었습니다. 또한 대한민국을 구하러 와서 분단으로 가서 마음이 편치 않다하시며 한국인 스스로가 방법을 찾아 주변세력에 관계없이 통일을 할 것이다 라는 말씀에 격하게 공감합니다. 그래야만 하구요. 통일은 스스로 해야합니다. 그방법은 특히 북한보다 대한민국이 더많은 인내와 대화와 설득을 이어가야 합니다.

죽을 수도 있음에도 한국을 위해 참전해주신것에 이 글과 말로 표현을 할 수 없을 정도로 감사하고 준장님께선 한 일이 한국군에 비해 적다고 하셨지만 그 당시 한국에겐 1명의 군인도 아주 간절했을 겁니다 참전용사분들이 있기에 대한민국의 70년전후 모습이 같은 나라라고 믿지 못할 만큼 발전할 수 있었습니다 감사합니다 오래오래 건강하세요

This video brought so many tears to my eyes. Especially the part where you showed the photo with the chinese soldiers. My family is from turkey and my uncle was a korean veteran too. Growing up he always told us about the time during the korean war. He himself was really young back then too. Just like Brigadier. I can‘t imagine being this young and fighting in a war. We grew up priviliged and i am really thankful to soldiers like Brigadier and my uncle, sacrificing their youth for peace.

I'm also thanksful to your uncle as a korean. Turkey and korea are called brothers' country cause Turkey participated korean war and did good things for korean people. The war had occurred about 70years ago, so many people become forget the war but we know that we can't be exist without sacrifice of so many young soldiers like your uncle. Thank you.

제가 15년전 영국서 가게 알바할때 제복입은 참전용사분이 계산대에 서계시는데 태극기 뱃지보고는 한국 대신해서 감사하다고 고개 숙여 인사했더니 경례로 받아주셨어요 그후 저를 hello sweetheart라고 부르시며 매일 신문 사가셨던 ㅎㅎ저두 creme egg 한알 드리고 그랬던 기억이 나네요. 영국남자 모든 스텝분들 대단한 에피소드 만들어주셔서 고마워요👍👍👏👏
