I think it's not suppose to have a taste, or if it does not too much since ofc the taste of the overall drink would still come from the drink itself, it's like in it for the fun, though if I do say so I do think tapiocas taste nice on its own. I used to order an extra one placed in a small cup and I'd eat just the tapiocas in it after finishing the drink.

"Boba" is Mandarin for "bubble" (as a borrowed term from English), which is what the balls were originally called when developed here in Taiwan. These days it is also commonly referred to as "zhen zhu" which means "pearl". Depending on the tea stand they might use the two to differentiate ball size (Boba for large, Zhenzhu for small). The brown sugar is because after steaming the balls have honey or sugar added to created that firm chewy texture; brown sugar adds the almost caramel flavor IN the balls. New challenge for Ollie, Zhenzhu War! Suck up the tea but keep the bubbles in your mouth. The straw makes a most excellent torpedo tube. Use as you would a spitwad. The balls stick like [RETRACTED] and are a horror to try to get out of your clothes just shy of a full laundering.

Boba = 波霸,originally a phrase derived from Cantonese, basically means "big boobs". Apparently the namer wanted to say "these balls are bigger, just like boobs". You see it isn't actually a good term, and Taiwanese rarely use BOBA to refer the drinks theses days (still on some shops' menu I guess)

Not a big fan of tapioca texture. I don’t eat sticky Korean rice cake(떡) for the same reason. I wish I can tolerate the texture of slimy things in my mouth so I can enjoy what 99.9999% of other people enjoy.

Ollie and Josh love each other so much today that they got me to smile as well after a nightmarish two days. Love is truly all it takes apparently. Thank you for being so open, it's contagious. And speaking of contagious, I love seeing your faces finally. It took us almost 3 years but the world is finally learning to walk again. One step at a time. It's really moving to watch.

I think its only fair to inform all bubble tea first timers of the fact that there are solid toppings in their drink. It helps prevent accidents. But honesty I don't get the dislike for pearls. Besides some that are way too sugary or artificially chewy, pearls are gold and delicious! Also it would've been great for them to try fruit bubble teas, those are so underrated and swept under the bus by all the milk ones. Thanks so much for this episode, bubble tea (particularly the fruit ones) are a blessing of the universe.

  • @mariaeva1992

Their accent is a London accent, mostly south, east or north London is where this accent originates. Ollie and Josh are a bit more well-spoken and have a generic English accent, they could be from anywhere in the South of England its hard to tell just by the accent. Strong doesn't necessarily mean "North", there are over 40 different dialects and accents in the UK. Even London has different accents depending on which part of London you're from! :)
