The show Maria Clara & Ibarra is derived from the book “Noli Me Tangere” written by our national hero Jose Rizal. It is a fictional depiction of Philippine history. Jose Rizal is know for rebelling or fighting against the Spaniards through writing. This story is a very significant part of our country’s history. There is a 2nd book, a sequel, “El Filibusterismo.” These 2 books are actually a part of our high school curriculum. Maria Clara & Ibarra is praised by a lot of Filipinos because it raised the Filipino youth’s interest in our history.

@@fanniedango9560 We studied Noli Me Tangere in our 3rd year in high school & El Filibusterismo in our 4th year in high school. We even watched a staged play for both books in the AFP Theater. This was way back 2000-2002. I don’t know what other schools teach but we have these books during my time & I even studied in a Chinese school… So… I will be quite puzzled if they don’t teach this in the non-Chinese public & private schools.

1:29-1:31 to answer that question, yes. Philippines was once a colony of Spain for more than 3 centuries, from 1564 to 1898. Under that period, the Spanish heavily influenced our cuisine, culture, religion, language and even our names, that's why most Filipinos have Spanish surnames. In fact, the name "Philippines" came from King Philip II of Spain. The setting of this drama is based on a novel that tells the story of the life of Filipinos during the Spanish occupation.

Spain vanished 80% of the culture and traditions that was practiced in the Philippines before they arrived. It angers me so much as other countries from Southeast Asia was colonized almost as hard as the Philippines but Philippines has lost the most from colonization. Those countries still recognizes their old culture even though they promote other culture now but the Philippines, they would even be against you if you say that there was actually abundant amount of culture in the Philippines before colonization.

​@@YungSiKrey I've spoken to Spaniards, they don't even teach about Philippines in their history classes, the youth there don't even know we were a colony of them. And they don't like being compared to their British counterparts, they don't like being reminded of their failures in the past

I was fooled by the "Make it Gen-Z" comedy type of trailer to this show and watched it thinking it would be fun. Oh how much I cried watching this show hahaha But I loved it!

I thought it would always bring me fun because of the "Make it Gen-Z" catchy line, but half of it was like a trauma for me🥲 It was really good tho, this teleserye will always be my number one. It's been a month since MCAI ended, and I'm still not moving on... 🥺

@@kk_sj3635 Jose Rizal's versions were tragedies, much worse to what happened originally in Maria Clara at Ibarra... Klay made me relieved a bit in El Fili, she saved Huli and stopped Ibarra...

The adults are so cute. They are so energetic and I love it.

Maria Clara at Ibarra is number one in the Philippines and won alot of awards. BarBie Forteza the lead actress is amazingly oke heck of a good actress!

Fun facts: during those times or even our grandparents generations, small things like holding hand, a peck in a cheeks lead to marriage already. That's why they emphasize the kiss for a long time, its means alot already for that era.

7:33 I can see why Miss Kim thought it's similar with Indian movies 😆 They really drag the scene for too long. Whether it's falling from a second floor balcony, falling from a cliff, falling from a building or just getting strangled with an appliance cord lol

Actually I don't normally watch Filipino drama only Filipino Horror or comedy movies but I really love Maria Clara at Ibarra coz I love historical drama. Thank you for your reaction video. I enjoyed it.

it was dragged because it is the most awaited scene. and kissing a woman , even touching her hand during those times are a huge deal.. it is like taking their V card.

We had only one adaption of noli me tangere which was aired in the 90's. That's the only historical drama I have remembered watching. It's good to see that they are recreating it on a different perspective. For those who didn't know Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo were among the novels made by Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Phil who was then an activist in times of spanish colonial era, these novels triggered the 1st Philippine revolution against the spanish empire.

Not the FIRST, but the LAST revolution against Spain. Even during the qy16th century, there were already revolts in some provinces especially the ethnic groups.

This show is a multi-awarded show and even the artists portrayed in the show won awards too. Such a phenomenal show.

Please tell them that the series has 105 episodes so the romance is slow burn and the reason why that accidental kiss scene was long was to make up for the slow but really cute romance development within those 60 plus episodes 😂

The kiss was accidental. 😊 They were both shocked that it happened. But at the same time, it was obvious, they both liked it. Though the girl had to act like she didn't, she's playing hard to get. They're cute!

The scene were it was dragging too long😂 it's not annoying at all mywahaha us people who watched it from the very start were waiting for that exact moment to happen and it did hahahaha so glad they dragged it a bit long so that I can process what just happened 😂

That girl Barbie forteza the lead was considered a b star in the philippines and only stars in romcoms and coming out dramas but she nailed her acting her, it was really suprising as no one takes here seriously until this drama.

Not really a GMA fan but this series made me love barbie forteza hoping for more dramas like this in the Philippines❤

Next time explain it to them what is the plot of the two novels and the show itself. And also show them some scenes that are really part of the novel. The scenes in the novel are really trending here and they were really talked about when it aired on the tv. While everyone is gushing over Klay and Fidel's romance, here I am fell really hard to Dennis Trillo's portrayal of Crisostomo Ibarra and Simoun. To be honest I watched MCI because of him from start to finish especially on El Fili arc. Although his character became dark and anti hero, I'm really amazed by how he transitioned a kind hearted, full of hope Crisostomo Ibarra to a cold blooded, revengeful Simoun. Its been a long time since I became a fan of a Filipino actor. And also the supporting characters and villains were really good too. Hopefully you can introduce it to them also. Nice reaction though.

It's a real Book written by the National Hero Jose Rizal but the Book came to life that is where the time travel comes in

Agree. Like noli is not just a novel. It is a novel who have awaken our heroes to fight for our country. Those 2 novels made significant help on gaining our freedom. I think some foreigner might think that this series is just like other time traveling or novel traveling stories.

The insights of the older pair was very interesting.

Philippines was a part of Spain for almost 400 years just like Mexico and other Latin American countries. It is the reason why the Filipino culture and every soul of the Filipino culture is hispanic. Clothing is only one of that. Aside from that the others are Catholicism, celebrations, traditional music, dance, aongs, literature, food, large percent of words, beliefs, architctures, structures of the center of every Filipino town in which there is always plazas and sorrounding that are the roman catholic churches and the municipal halls since the church should guide the givernment, our value system ( time, compadrino, siesta, palabra de honor), our fond of merry making and lively community which is similar to Latin America. The clothing are part of yhe Filipino culture for centuries and centuries starting from the hispanic philippines. Filipino culture of today is molded and founded un spanish culture.

The older person has a better and wiser outlook and fun. Hopefully this will be exported/shown to other countries. Better explain first the background of the show so they will somehow understand.

It would be nice to export it to Korea, but since it's based on a Philippine historical novel, it might not feel the same to foreigners. But if it's marketed to them as a Philippine _sageuk_ without the context of the novel, some might like it.

They'll appreciate it more if they have a sufficient knowledge on the film...including the background on the setting being portrayed.... Filipinos for once can really relate to it since el fili and noli are being discussed in schools

1:28 Spanish was actually a national language (lingua franca) in the Philippines even during the First Philippine Republic in 1898 just until 1987. Around 70% of Filipinos spoke Spanish before but the usage declined to to US colonization and usage of English in lieu of Spanish, then followed by WWII and finally the declaration of Tagalog and the invention of it's standardized version "Filipino" as a national language. It's unfortunate really as majority of our history and arts are written in Spanish. Most of them are just translated into Tagalog. Today, there are many young proponents of bringing back the Spanish language in the Philippines cause if I'm not mistaken, there are now only around 300,000 Filipino Spanish speakers. Culturally, The Philippines is also the sole Hispanic-Asian nation in Asia. Hence the blend of culture from the attires to the food, tradition, and architecture.

It's not only 300,000; excluding Chavacano speakers, it's about 500,000 people is speaking Spanish right now. And around 4,000 people speak the Philippine Spanish variant. If Chavacano speakers included, it's at 1 million people speak fluent and broken Spanish.

I remember reading an article a week ago saying it's around 3-5% of the entire population speaks Spanish as their L1 meaning around half a million. Spanish as a 2nd language havent been taken into account considering schools like my previous one still have Spanish as a subject to which I thought I would ace since I speak it but I failed. At law school, Spanish is a major subject along with History.

But in my school which is all girls school and one of th oldest spanish university in the philippines, we still have spanish subject and we are required to learn it😭 but actually its a very big help to deep more in english vocabularies

i think this would be a bit difficult to foreigners to really get without some guide or familiarity, like how the characters speak differently (with deep filipino, spanish, english, and even taglish), but i think if the clips showed or given more context, they would be a bit less confused lol (like about her trying to study noli in class)

@@marlonquismundo idk, maybe cause there were some anime i've watched with fansubs that elaborate or highlight that there's a difference in speech. or maybe if the subs use a deeper english when they speak deep filipino, just to get the language barrier problem across.
