Vernon has spoken a lot in the past about his identity issues and people treating him like a foreigner even though he feels Korean, since he moved to Korea when he was 5. He got bullied badly as well like some of the other people mentioned in the video. It's wild to think they still get criticised for their looks while also complimented for them, it must be really confusing and frustrating even now.

It’s a mix of in group preference mixed with slight jealousy.

I am a mixed race Korean, and yeah, it can get weird. Because I was born and raised in Seoul, but people in stores would talk to me in English or compliment me on my Korean - which isn't bad or rude, but it makes you feel like you never 100% belong.

Vernon is not just hot, he's also very talented but i don't see nobody talking about him? he's the main rapper, dancer and also has the most credits (85+) in their songs after woozi (120+). Not just that but he's very humble and attractive personality wise too, the kind of person that nobody can dislike him. Also the girls were exclaiming the whole time like "oh why are they good at korean bla bla" they are HALF KOREAN. If they are good at the language from the foreign side of the family they still can be good at korean because they are NOT foreigners but MIXED? GET IT? Stop alienating them as if they don't belong there.

I assumed he was from somewhere Middle East mixed with Korean. Cause usually the white people I see have more masculine, defined western features, ugh I don’t know how to describe..but yeah.

Mm...i find it weird that they're shocked that a korean can speak korean. Even if they are "half" korean, they are still korean. They look at it in a way of: the glass is half empty. Instead it should be: the glass is half full. I'm not mixed, but I moved away when I was very young. I get offended when people are shocked that i can read, write and speak MY language. It’s definitely hard being mixed race. Sometimes it’s a double edged sword bc your either accepted or not. I’m Taiwanese from my dads side and Mexican Brazilian from my moms. And being mixed raced isn’t a bad thing at all but the stares you get doubting yourself and not knowing which group you fit in because it’s overall hard.

I find it so weird that they considered mixed race Koreans as foreigners especially if they were raised in Korea there are idols who are full blooded Koreans but but were raised elsewhere and are less culturally Korean than a lot of mix race Koreans. I feel like I had the opposite first impression of most of these idols, regarding how easy it was to tell their ethnicity. Like Somi and Kai were very obviously mixed race, but I I literally just found out Danielle was a few weeks ago, I thought she was ethnically Korean and just Australian nationality. And I think it was even easier to tell when they were younger because there wasn't as much makeup or styling in the way. Nothing negative, I just find it interesting that they thought the opposite. I did grow up in a diverse area with a lot of mixed race people so maybe that makes a difference, idk.

Haknyeon from The Boyz is also mixed, chinese-korean! my mom is chinese-vietnamese and my dad is irish, english and dutch. sometimes i do find it hard to feel as if i “fit in” with my mom’s side of the family, and certain comments have made me feel almost like i’m “not asian enough.” sometimes i feel like i’m just not accepted.

Depends. Nowadays, blasians are also accepted more compared to the past. In gangnam, a lot of foreigners visit (saying this as a native here) and half of them are either white or black or those from other provinces. And I see Koreans with them all, especially the younger Koreans don’t bat an eye when they see white or black people. They care more about WEALTH/STATUS than your color, you’d know if you lived here for a long time than what mainstream media tells. And yes there are racists here as there are any everywhere in the world. Even white foreigners aren’t accepted. I’m not sure who keeps spreading false info that white people are accepted. I mean I agree that white people are more accepted in terms of look personality etc including status, but a lot of white foreigners are kicked out of clubs here and treated horribly. There was this one white lady who was assaulted by a Korean in a club or bar if I remember correctly, she called the cops, but the cops were too lenient and let the Korean man go and were not fair to the women. Same thing happened to black peoples here. Women are often sexually assaulted and police don’t do much, that’s how our system is and it’s flawed…

Korean people care more about status in general. There are many rich black foreigners that come and purchase stuff, go to bars, I’ve seen Koreans complimenting them and nobody really judged them. But if a black foreigner wearing just plain tee and pants with backpack, they will gossip or don’t even care about the existence. Some give more better treatment to those who are wealthier. I know cause I was discriminated by my own people for lacking fashion brand wears I couldn’t afford. And the colorism is deeply rooted in Korean history as well as other parts of Asia, I don’t know much about other parts of Asia though. Just this one. Unfortunately, having lighter skin meant you were of noble birth / wealth power status because only servants would work in the heat and their skin would be tanned. It’s not because of white people, they aren’t our exact standards, we don’t want to look like them, a lot of Koreans prefer lighter skin cause of their cultural colorist history. I have tanned skin and I won’t change it, it’s part of me. I do wear sunscreen for damage protection though. A lot of white people tell us we want to look like THEM, and it bothers me…we don’t care about them as much as the media says to others. It’s, again, more about wealth power status than a race will ever be.

It’s so funny that you guys can’t tell these idols are mixed when they all look perfectly so to me. Somi looks more white than Asian especially with her blonde hair. Nancy from Momoland is one of the cases where she sometimes doesn’t look mixed at all. I think it’s fascinating how a hair colour or makeup look can change someone from looking mixed to completely one race.

Despite he's mix or not, Huening Kai is all rounder. That's a fact❤️

I don’t know about idols but there are plenty of mixed race kids in the other industries as an actor/actress, model in general and tbf there are lots of them in the music industry. I think it’s just some of those kids that you’re talking about do not have what it is to be an idol. Just look at Jeon SoMi she is an all rounder and she still is struggling tbf. So i do not believe it has something to do with race.

I also find this interesting. There does seem to be more idols mixed with white than other ethnicities. Even other Asian ethnicities too. There is one I believe former idol now (he hasn’t been active in the Korean Entertainment Industry for years now) who’s half Korean and Mexican though, Kim Samuel. I think he’s moved to the US now.

hopefully they’ll be a time that koreans stop referring to mixed koreans as foreigners especially if they’re culturally korean. you’ll never hear in the west people calling mixed people foreigners…like wtf.

Hm, I know this might be too ambitious of a suggestion at this time, but I'll go ahead anyway and let the OSSC creators do what they will with it! So, I think a small but significant change (or addition!) when talking about foreign or mixed-raced individuals would be to specify the ethnic part rather than just the nationality, ESPECIALLY if we're talking about Americans, Canadians, Australians... The colonizer history of these places is too deep to get into here, but basically being American, Australian, etc =/= being white, it's only a nationality and not an ethnicity! And I think the regulars that we see on OSSC are totally capable of letting their perceptions evolve on this kind of topic! I mean they literally did it with Vernon to an extent by specifying his mom's French-American background (which still doesn't mean "white" but i digresssss) Anyway, again, I understand that this can be a lot to incorporate into the info snippets within the scripts, but it never hurts to dismantle even a little bit of the white-centric perception of countries that are actually mostly multi-cultural/multi-ethnic! These videos are fun and interesting to watch, and always informative in one way or another!! Thanks OSSC 🫶
