That flop is a check-behind against a BB-defense range nearly all the time, especially with Holmes' particular hand. I give him a ton of credit for his play on the river, though. It would have been very easy to take a free showdown with such a showdownable hand, but he recognized he was likely beat and that was a bad river for Aldemir. Holmes is a terrific feel player, but his fundamentals are lacking.

agree 100%. Not checking back the kind of showdown value holding KQ was the final no doubt. One of those spots where you're only getting called with better and folding out anything less. stacks make it tough but i can see maybe 1/3 pot to target like KJ or A10 type hands but that shove was so over the top. big words from someone who didn't just win 4.3 milli but still

If you are mad at someone be mad at Disney. The last few years they have cutting costs where ever they can. On Air Talent, support personnel and programming where the cost outweighed the financial return. And to quote Joe Hachem, "watching poker has become as exciting as watching paint dry." Most players who are elite learned from online and have 0 personality. To the casual poker TV viewer, watching a live stream of poker is boring. It worked well when it was in the edited 1 or 2 hour long episode form. Most people can't or won't sit and watch a 12 hour final table.

I think it was obvious that this was Holmes strategy from the start of the day when they were three handed. He moved all-in frequently and 3-bet light. He knew that the was the weakest player and he knew he would lose quickly if he allowed Koray Aldemir to control the action and play small ball. So Holmes decided to force Aldemir to make tough decisions and gamble. It's not a bad strategy when you are outclassed. Holmes actually made life difficult for Aldemir. Unfortunately, he took a bad spot in that last hand. The all-in is a bad bet with negative EV. 90% of the time when he gets called, he is beat. So why bet if you only get called by hands that beat you. He should have checked or possible thin value bet for 40M.

What a sick call. And great move by Holmes (although he should not have been in the hand after the check raise). So easy for Holmes to have QJ hearts, or K10 in that spot. The fact that it was so even in chip stacks made the call essentially the whole tourney for both players. Tournament poker has become far less watchable, it's just not as interesting anymore because players frequently tank 2-5 minutes per hand decision. Time extension chips would be game changers for viewers.
