@Sailor-Mars- Hi! As an artist myself, I personally try to constantly expand my skills, and I believe that favouring a race, gender or age to draw is based on subconscious or even purposeful perspectives, which should be challenged and evolved regularly. Another reason why I find it strange is how she talks about how she only draws "pretty people", and they're all white, and skinny, (which whether that is her intent or not), does seem to favour white people as "pretty" in her standards. Hope this helps!

Honestly, many people take her advice wayyyyy too seriously. I occasionally watch her because I like her art process and style but, the thing is that when you watch videos looking for advice don’t take it too much to heart and practically transition your art style to hers. You can take some bits and pieces here and there and apply it to your art style. Some people may not like her humor but honestly I don’t mind it. TLDR: Don’t take her too seriously and take bits and pieces of her advice and apply it to your own art instead of stealing (?) her style. 🌝

It's a rule of thumb to myself personally to never cling to one artist in order to avoid having my style morph into theirs. I never take her stuff too seriously, including her advice because there are always sarcastic undertones to it that signals to me that it shouldn't be taken to heart. The thing about Koolin is that she's sardonic in a way a lot of people find it's funny. Most of the people who like her art are very early on their artistic journey, her tips are bleak, she cuts corners in a way that makes her art worse (imo) and she recognises that she doesn't know why some things work. But she brings attention to free or cheap resources useful to those who want to try digital art out and she's entertaining to listen to. She's not an art teacher, she's an entertainer who has a very specific aesthetic, and good and bad takes on art and life. She doesn't deserve to receive hate and vitriol, but there are many reasons not to like her content and that's ok. We can be critical and analytical while understanding that not everyone that says something we don't like on the internet is evil.

thank you for pointing out her art tip issues! i had one short of hers that popped up on my feed where she literally just says she doesnt know why this happens and that she just copies her reference. it was 2am when i watched it so i went to my notes app and wrote a 5 page rant explaining everything that was happening that she says she doesnt understand. a lot of the short cuts she takes and recommends to her audience arent applied properly. like her rim light tip to make her art pop literally doesnt make sense in the lighting she draws because she doesnt establish a light source before shading. she doesnt branch out in her art, drawing what can feel like the same picture over and over again. and again, i would not have an issue with her if her audience werent so impressionable and follow her like a cult. tldr: i never really liked her, but jumped on the hate train due to her pushing her poorly applied art tips on her young audience and acting like her word is gospel.

Is she angry others branch out and she views smaller artists as pretentious because they aren't trying to throw away their passion for a following? Also note how she has this victim blamey "You're a poor artist because you decided to be poor" attitude.

Let's face it, we're coming to a point where artists are not allowed to create the art they want to make, and all art is going to eventually have to be voted on by the court of public opinion as to ticking off all the boxes whether the artist has any knowledge in those areas or not. You shouldn't necessarily have to "educate yourself" to make art if you are simply expressing yourself and making art about the things you know, or that you like. Targeting your art to a particular demographic is not a sin, and no one should expect everybody to create things to appeal to everybody. First off that's impossible, and second it leads to art that is completely disposable with nothing to say. Everyone should find the artist and art/music/film that speaks to them and learn to ignore the rest understanding that those creations may speak to someone else, or they may speak to you at another stage in your life.

why does this has so less likes than every other q-q. WHat youre saying is sooo valid. Like its better to not force diversity and risk false information on said area than just do what disney is doing rn. Just bc someone isn't drawing darked skinned chubby lgbtqia+ oc with no/u pronounce doesn't mean they spread hate. Yeah i also agree with "draw beatifull people" and thats just what beauty standards we have is a bit controversial, but really its not like some people who straight up say black people are ugly. Don't just assume the worst, that tells a lot about your sentiment than anything. Its all an interpretation of how you want to receive it. Besides her artsytles doesn't even have purely white skinned people if skin color matters to you. And if race matters to you, how do you know this character is 100% white? What do you even catagorize as white? The people who took over native america? Those who created slavery? Americans? Europeans? Not to say asians also have a varaiety between fairly white to darker skin complexions. Maybe she just drew an asian and you accused her of drawing white people. Thats also not right. But really, why does it matter so much to you that you have to hate. If diversity really means something to you, then don't follow Kooleen, but any other artist who share the same values, there are tons of them. Instead of giving them love you turn to an already popular artist and hate on them, give them even more free advertisement. Idk it just seem so stupid really, since she didn't even do anything outright racist. The controversies is her never drawing any darker skinned people. It could be bc of racist reason, but also could equaly be bc of it being outside of her confort zone. But i fear if she stepps out of it and post an black oc, people might call her racist bc the skin tone isn't dark enough, or its too dark or its racist to slander this culture in that way... Like so many controversies before. I think people are just scared to tap into this area. So basically, instead of spreading hate, share support and encurengment for drawing further diversities and educate people in a friendly and non toxic way. Only then will there be no excuses to not draw diversity.

@@yaB0i_Hawkx This is what gets me, you'll see comments dissing, or trying to cancel some artist for something a person didn't like, and yet it's obvious they have to follow that person to be aware of what they're doing. There are lots of artists whose work doesn't appeal to me, there are artists whose work I like, but don't necessarily like the artist, and I have absolutely no idea what they might do or say on their social media because I don't follow them. I honestly believe some people follow creators wanting to get angry that the artist is simply doing their thing. I'm a film major and I see this in film all the time "XXX director never has this or that minority in their films, or significant parts for women". Artists make the art they have a passion for, and now we're putting artists in a no win situation where you want them to make art based on someone else's criteria and then rake them over the coals if they do it badly. I'd honestly rather have no representation from a creator than bad representation. It's very disingenious at it's core because we don't do this for all aspects of art. Nobody tells Stephen King that all he writes are horror novels and he "needs" to do a romance. Nobody tells Mel Brooks he makes too many comedies and needs to diversify and make an action movie. These artists do what they're good at, and have a core audience that likes what they do, and all artists should have that freedom without being criticised for it.

No other kind of artist is aspiring for me, because you will never learn how to draw what you see. Especially cuz I'm also a writer, which makes me want to draw my characters in situations. I've picked up on Kooleen to be speaking in a very ironic way, and I think that's a very important thing that people should pick up on that, but there was one thing that Kooleen pointed out that goes on within her artwork that I have kind of seen in my own art, and I hadn't really thought about it until I looked at some of the traffic on my own art, and that being the posts portraying women who happen to be rather feminine get a lot more traffic than posts portraying men in general, and I wonder if it has something to do with there seems to at least in western mainstream media be a lack of feminine women, or women are being defeminized (I've seen this lately video games made in the west), there seems to be this subset of people both men and women who are looking for feminine women, and turning to other media, and that just so happens of course, outside of the mainstream, something Kooleen is not a part of.

A lot of comments are talking about how she doesn’t draw ‘ugly people’ and it’s like, idk she doesn’t have to if she doesn’t want to. It’s her drawings and her channel. And I know she makes art tips on how to make your art ‘smeggsy’ but idk I’ve always read those as kinda like, joke tutorials and not something you should follow to the T. Also, yeah I have noticed that drawings of women get a lot more traction than ones of men. However I don’t think it’s because of “defeminisation” of women in western media. also all the talk about her only drawing pale thin conventionally attractive people would be less relevant if she didn't position herself as a teacher. like yeah of course draw whatever you want, but she's got a lot of young artists looking up to her. some people just learn to draw a narrow set of features/bodytypes (99% of the time its eurocentric/thin) and feel they have all it takes to teach others about art in general. i feel like people in this discussion often forget she carries more responsibility as a popular creator + teacher. p.s. not to say representation isn't important if you are not a teacher. we treat art as if it doesn't affect real peoples feelings, as if erasing ethnic and non-conventionally attractive features is "just an art style". p.p.s. kinda irrelevant but just another thing i don't like about her content is how she does art critique. i understand it's not that serious and she's playing a character but in general i think people in online communities have gotten way too comfortable with bullying young people for exploring different styles and techniques.

Sometimes it ain’t even jokes, sarcasms or simply click baiting for views, it’s just mockery of artists that has a different style. If you watch her for haha funny juicy lips and feet jokes then whatever idc. I don’t suggest watching Kooleen for art advices because it’s the worst I’ve seen. I think people take Kooleen way too seriously. Her content is supposed to be funny, cringey, and sarcastic. When she’s talking about not drawing ugly people, she doesn’t genuinely mean it. It’s a savage joker persona she has going on. SamDoesArts has said similar things and he also has a savage persona at times. My personal opinion is that she doesn’t draw different facial structures because she’s not confident in drawing them. I get the feeling she’s still fairly new to the art world, at least when it comes to posting online (wouldn’t know for sure). She’s still got a lot to learn and she has admitted that in her videos. I think she’s here to have fun and I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. Art shouldn’t have to be all about doing something grand and impactful. For me, I love drawing fan-art because I love drawing the things I love. I’m autistic and I obsess over things, so being able to replicate it in art ends up being a great release. I draw whoever, but I shouldn’t have to because it’s not my job to do that. Another thing to consider is that maybe she draws a bunch of Asian women because she is Asian. I notice that we tend to draw people who are of the same colour. White people draw white people the most, black people draw black people, so on and so forth. That doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t draw other types of people, but it’s just something I noticed. Kinda like how Kasey Golden draws women with hairy legs because she herself has hairy legs. If Kooleen claimed she was here to post all about inclusivity, then it would be an issue. But she’s literally just drawing and posting vids. People ask to see her process, so she shares it in small and digestible videos. She doesn’t do big tutorials because she doesn’t claim to be an art teacher. I just think people are picking a useless fight

I mean, who cares if she’s not going into detail about technique when it’s encouraging and inspiring people to get into art? Lots of people are defending her by saying she doesn't have to draw black characters with that thing. She doesn't have to draw them, but whenever someone commissions them to her she would give their dark skin character is this ashy like pale skin, and that's what irritated me is that whilst in the same breath being disrespectful to these artist she has yet to apologize to any of the people characters that she drew ashy like that these characters had brown and dark skin once again, people go on defending Kooleen by saying she might not know how to shade skin like that, I don't care, then don't commission these people, don't even let them commission you these things Kooleen can learn, because she's literally an artist, she knows what she's doing, I won't even say she doesn't know how to draw brown or darker skin tones, because she's literally a professional artist at this point, and she knows what she's doing. She's not a new artist her fans defending her every time she ruins a brown skin character or dark skin character by making them look grey will always be disrespectful to me Once again Kooleen has an extremely colorist mindset :/ I'm sick and tired of her fanbase defending her when it comes to her drawing these types of characters because yes, they're trying to make up stupid excuses by saying she doesn't have to draw black people, but if someone were to commission her, some she would totally whitewashed the hell out of them or make them look ashy and I don't like it this is why so many people dislike her, it's not even her humor it's her colorist mindset in her fan base and her inability to take accountability

Genuinely never really seen anything of her art but when it comes to clout chasing etc I can see where shes comming from. The hard part is some people don't know how to navigate the social realm, and due to that do resort to "only drawing pretty people" because those are the things that tend to get more likes. As someone whos been trying to years to get into selling art professionally (because for me its really the only option to not be on disability my whole life) its extremely hard to find people who will buy your art without getting a lot of likes. Obviously if you do more diverse drawings or draw "ugly" people then the likes you get will be more meaning ful, but sadly they also dont tend to bring in money. Though theres another side to that that I dont really see any artists talking about: pricing points. If you price your art too high then people wont buy it because "its not worth it" or "its not good enough" or simply they cant afford it. But if you put it too low its viewed as either "this artists doesnt have confidance" "if they dont think their art is worth x amount then why would i pay x amount?" or they think of it in a suspicious lens of "this is way too cheap for what it is did they trace it? did they steal the design?" etc. Personally I always sold my paintings and drawings for around $2- $5 CAD so that people with low incomes who like my art can get it without feeling bad for spending money on something they dont need. The problem with that is now since its too cheap people dont want to buy it. Iv'e raised my prices slightly $5 - $15 USD (approximately $7 - $35 CAD) an have gotten a few more buyers, but most people still tell me to raise the prices or others wont buy from me. The art world is extremely hard to navigate. some artists earn $100/ hour and others raise $0.10/hour. I wish your success didnt rely on how many people saw your art or how much clout you have, but sadly it does. so Personally i cant blame people for doing what they think will get them more subscribers. wow that was long. sorry to all that read all that

It’s so annoying when people decide to throw so much hate to artists just because they don’t like they’re art style, I used to get a lot of rude comments on my DeviantArt account and it always ruined my day, and it didn’t even happen that often, a lot of other artists are currently getting SHIT TONS of rude comments about their art and it’s so disheartening to see.

Too many beginners take these KZreadrs’ word as gospel when art is really a huge problem solving exercise. If you’re a beginner and are actually hungry for knowledge, you need to take information and inspiration from a variety of sources because these people are not all equal in terms of the quality of info they provide. Someone can display great skill and be a very poor teacher. I personally don’t like Kooleen’s humor, and her art doesn’t appeal to me. I don’t hate her; I just choose to not watch. She doesn’t deserve hate, but she does deserve criticism for potentially guiding impressionable artists down a rocky road.

Tbf the fanart thing is correct. A lot of people already know the character thats drawn and like the art/artist. I draw fanart mostly, but whenever i draw ocs they always get less attention. Industry wise - a lot of people buy fanart items. I follow a lot of fanartists who open their own shops filled with fanart they did. So making money off their art doesn't really fully depend on other industries.

I think her lack of diversity in her art would be fine if she wasn’t giving out critiques to other artists who will inevitably have a wide variety of features. That and her only saying to draw “sexy” features or whatever rubs me the wrong way since all she draws is white/pale skinny people with smooth skin… idk that’s more of a personal thing as a fat person that makes me iffy, I don’t care if it’s a joke, it’s the kind of mean spirited jabbing at several communities that have had those insults thrown at us for years. Hopefully this makes sense

even if with the with washing and stuff just keep the skin the same dont change it at all changing any race or skin is not okay at all. for ex: if you are drawing a indian char and make them black instead that is taking rep form one race and giving it to another.

i think some people are taking her "i dont draw ugly people" comment a lil too seriously since shes been making that joke since she started out (ig the joke gets a lil iffy when she only draws east asian and eurocentric features) but i really doubt it has anything to do with racism per se since she herself is east asian so mayb she finds it easier or comforting to only draw those features??

I’m sorry if this sounds super antagonistic, I don’t mean it to be, but a lot of people are saying that she’s joking. But how can you tell? I personally can’t really tell if there is a difference in her tone of voice when she’s joking, but she also really does only draw conventionally attractive people and said that whole thing about chasing clout and that sounded serious.

@@HiBuddyyyyyy dw u rnt coming off as antagonistic as her humour is kinda hard to catch since its mostly sarcasm plus she has a rlly monotone voice so it just sounds like shes speaking normally. honestly she could actually be saying the truth, infact i think theres halftruth to what she says and propably believes, but its also so ridiculous that i just chalked it upto her as joking

@@khoi101people are trying to pass her humor off as campy and troll-y when there are so many other creators with campy humor who get praised for it like Rin herself, when the issue is that her personality>talent which is what fuels her hate and her fans: leaving room for people to take her 'jokes' one way or another.
