    I want to give my perspective on this as a Filipino, because Kooleen is Filipino. People who defend her (I assume to be international fans) may say she does draw POC aka Asian people because she's Asian herself. However, COLORISM is still very prevalent in the Philippines and much of Southeast Asia. Kooleen mostly draws characters with eurocentric and East Asian features, and EA culture has been idolized in the PH for a long time (anime, kpop, kdrama). Thus their beauty standards have influenced PH beauty standards as well, while our own native features are put down. Which is why I find it harmful that she says she doesn't draw "ugly people" and I have not seen her draw any Filipino characters (apart from a couple of fanart of people who DO fit the beauty standards) and just darker skinned people in general.

    A senior artist I worked with (I don't mean an elderly artist, just a more experienced artist) saw my drawings and asked "do you draw attractive people all the time?" and I said yeah, he then advised me not to do that and try drawing faces and bodies differently or reference actual features from people IRL. I didn't get why I should do that bc I thought it's just my preference. Now I know why. The goal is to GROW outside your comfort zone and actually be better at art in general. Imagine if I didn't dare try to draw the other eye, or the hands, or men. I wouldn't be the same artist I'm proud of right now.

  • @teru_9921

    @teru_9921

    @@AllyFin drawing what you like is also valid. A lot of people draw things they're fond of and attracted to, it's not uncommon. But I'm speaking as someone who pursues art seriously as a career and not just mere hobbyist anymore, so actually improving my artistic skills and knowledge is going to benefit me in pursuing this path. One of which is listening to an advice from a pro. Secondly, I added about drawing the other eye, hands, and men because I used to not be able to draw those (I originally only draw pretty girls)- and because those are common problems artists often have. Had I not motivate myself to learn it, I'd never get where I am now as an artist. And even when I was still a hobbyist, I don't enjoy being stagnant and would definitely still learn new things. So again, it's up to the individual. Hope that clears things up.

Just literally trying to use the same base for every race, but after watching the full video and reading this comment and reflecting on my own knowledge as an artist (especially someone who tries to capture different people and face shapes and such) and reflecting on the fact that I, as a white artist, have never tried to force Eurocentric features on characters of other races except when I was like 12 and drawing the same face over and over for the same character. But to make several videos afterwards on different platforms and not address it, you lose the "I was ignorant to blah blah blah" card. It was intentional, and she's showing us how she really feels. As a black artist that looks like the “gorilla mf” and is a little insecure about it this hurt me 💀 it’s perfectly fine not to draw darker skinned people when you’re doing art for yourself. HOWEVER when you’re teaching like Koolen is that’s when you absolutely need to be multifaceted. That’s when it’s harmful to young artists as well as black/brown people. Shame on her for teaching this and pushing that our features are not worthy of drawing. A little disappointed to say the least😭 AGAIN JUST WANT THIS KNOWN: no one is forcing her to draw darker skinned people at all. I never said she HAS to draw people like me that’s perfectly fine if she doesn’t this is just an observation on how this could potentially be harmful to younger artists. Absolutely no hate to her I’m sorry I didn’t specify enough with my first comment.

    Honestly, from the first Kooleen video I watched back when she had only about ~300k subs, she already left a taste in my mouth that was so ridiculously sour. I didn’t know it at the time, but I realized it after she got 1m. Her art was soulless and underwhelming, just extremely mediocre, her tutorials don’t help young artists learn how to draw, it just helps them learn how to draw *like her*. I think in that same video I watched she outright said that she wasn’t trying to be funny at all, she was just being honest. Now seeing her call Black features “gorilla” features gives me all the more reason to dislike Kooleen. On the issue of her barely drawing POCs other than East Asians, I am a light-skinned Filipina and colorism really is a huge, huge problem in the Philippines, East Asia is also extremely idolized in the Philippines, Eurocentric and/or East Asian features with light skin is pretty much the beauty standard here. I get a lot of comments from people saying that they want my skin color. My parents told me I shouldn’t go outside to “avoid getting brown skin”, they even told me people get work opportunities for that, I watched a documentary on how many Filipinos, especially Filipino women spend money to bleach their skin (I believe my mother has tried this too), skin whitening products are darn near everywhere. TLDR: Colorism in the Philippines is batshit crazy.

    Tbh, ive never really liked Koolen. I never hated her, but its kind of her personality. She literally acts like she is the number one artist in the world, and when people’s drawings aren’t like her ARTSYLE, she literally roast it BADLY. And when i open the comments section,i only see positive comments of people PRAISING her, because they are scared that she might roast them, and because most of her fans have lack of self esteem, while Kooleen has a lot of self esteem, i have no problem with that, but she drains other people with her ego. And when she roast people’s art, as we all notice, she doesn’t respect it, and says offending words. Which is not okay! ^^. And the worst is that her fans are like “Why is everyone taking Kooleen’s words so seriously? Like yall lets all appreciate her for WASTING her time to give us the best tips ever!” When in reality most of her fans who say this are actually offended by her comments but doesn’t admit it because they are too “afraid”. Well honey, she can DEFINITELY and SIMPLY give us tips without roasting us THIS bad. And no, i WILL take myself seriously and im not gonna let some youtuber roast my art rudely. Plus, she always draw the same facial features on her character, skintone,etc. And when it comes to people drawing different artstyle/skintone characters, she is not okay with that. Lets all be for real for ONCE.

    I don't.. really get it? I know kooleen will have her own opinion and she will continue to live with her opinion, which i believe is that east asians are prettiest. she likes drawing east-asians, and thats not a problem to me or you i believe. but she can't always do what you request her, especially if they don want to step out of their comfort zone and maybe draw other races, because skin colour matching can be hard. it's even hard for me. i'm not trying to stand up for kooleen, i understand that she may be calling darker skin toned (it doesn't feel right to me to say black.) people because she's used to her manhua artstyle! and i believe that she may think that you will criticize her because her artstyle looks ugly when drawing darker skinned people. i haven't listened to the woman in the video yet, as its really late at night. if someone can summarise the video for me and point out all of my mistakes it would be great. kooleen is a great artist, and she should keep pursuing i believe.

    Some people might say that not all black people look like this and that’s fine, but most need to remember that society hasn’t actually welcomed us into its depth with all our authenticity. Which is why we still have to pass laws to wear our hair out, why we were pushed into decrepit neighborhoods and why we’re still deeply mistreated for looking “too black” in the wrong spaces. There’s a very filtered image of us that gets to be famous or be influencers, which is black people with smaller or more so acceptable features. We have full wide black features, we came from the heat. We DEVELOPED this way, there is a minority of black people who have small, Eurocentric features being painted as the majority for a very insidious reason (no shade to them). pretending like they’re the majority is being willingly obtuse and feeding into an idea that is already realistically hurting our community. Let’s not play stupid, she’s a South east Asian woman and she’s specifically attracted to East Asian features. She’s bound to discriminate against full, wide ethnic features, they are the anti-thesis of what she finds attractive and beautiful. It’s okay to admit what is already a reality. she is prejudice against features that belong to a certain people. If you’re willing to consider sides that defend her or let her off the hook, be willing to open your mind listen to black people who have to live under the very REAL microscope for having these features if you actually give a shit. Otherwise keep it moving y’all. Remember, Not ALL black people, but MOST black people have full features. Keep it a buck! EDIT::: ALSO! Key note? if monkey and gorilla comments originally came about to be RACIST toward black people and to dehumanize us… what do you think that makes her if she was caught mimicking the same kind of rhetoric? 🙀 yeah.

    People saying it's anime art. Bro anime has black people like Onyankopon from aot, some are from bleach( i don't watch bleach but i know from tiktok ok) and Hunter x hunter, promised neverland , jujutsu kaisen and more. Also Isayam's art style is imo one of the best ,one they don't follow generic anime doll type art( that kooleen fans say) aot characters all have unique noses and features. Is kooleen also gonna dismiss Isayama's art cuz it's not conventional or fits in her tutorials. Also i used to watch her tutorials and she always draws either pretty white or asian people. It's not wrong. But to fit drawing of black person's profile in that anatomy( which in fact isn't right) is racist. Black people and south asian( i am an Indian) yes ,we have different features and face shapes . There is no perfect side profile. She says she is teaching art but stick to only one race like does other race not exist? Also i think 'fix art' vids generally are not good cuz art isn't supposed to be perfect, it is supposed to convey message , emotions and meaning. Art could be disproportionate and different. That's the essence of art. If you're learning anime/manhwa artstyle it's okay. Watch vids featuring real anatomy. And perspective not some artist who does'nt know anatomy herself. No offense to anyone but kooleen this one can't be overlooked. 'Gorilla looking' i have a lil bit of underbite, my lips protrudes a bit, so acc. to her I'm not fit in anatomy or people with noses other than button just don't exist. That's just wrong on so many level. Hope she understands one day. Also she is quick to response to roast but won't say anything about this, now that just says a lot.

    I have seen a couple of people comment on how Kooleen only really draws the same emotionless, manwuah faces which is true but here's the thing, she will draw hyperdetailed, meme type faces at the end of SOME of her tutorials as a joke. This shows she CAN draw some interesting art when she pushes herself to do so but the majority of the time she won't do that. She'll just stick to the old, repetitive method of attractive, euro-centric/East asian models because she knows and acknowledges in her own videos that is what gets her the clout she admits to chasing, she wants the clicks, the views and the likes, and that's the easy route for her. I won't completely blame her for THAT because it's her choice to draw whatever she likes but it's kinda missed potential that she won't experiment with her style and instead will continue with the same old formula.

  • @Ellie-bj2uw
    @Ellie-bj2uw11 ай бұрын

    For me it wasn't the tutorial that really bothered me but the fixing art bit. I mean liquifying the art to have conventionally attractive/eurocentric features feels very upsetting to me. But i blame this on the fact that Koolen probably has a severe case of same face sybdrome. Which if you chek her Instagram and her drawings of miguel you'll be able to see. Because of that she isn't able to acknowledge diverse features because she couldn't draw them even if she wanted to. And there's nothing particularly wrong with that but maybe if that's the case she really shouldn't be fixing art or giving advice or criticism as she puts it.

    There is nothing wrong with your side profile. Humans have diverse facial features and although art tips found on the internet may help you get an idea of where to place the facial features on a face, tips are just loose guidelines. It's like learning the rules (of course these aren't rules that are set in stone, just a simplification on my part) so you will know where to bend them or break them to suit your style. There are no hard and fast rules to it and even if your features do not follow them, it doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with them. Let me reiterate, your features do not need to follow or fit a certain criteria, don't let one artist who does not understand facial anatomy define how you see yourself because the rules they set for themselves in their art does not reflect real life.

    advice on finding good tutorial for begginners : - Nothing is absolute, if they say "always do this" / "never do that" its a red flag, all rules are meant to be brocken in art, even in this comment, there's always exceptions. If you follow a rule too rigidly (i lack a better word) it can make you stuck at some point of your progress, i sure know i did, you'll progress faster by staying flexible. Even one and two point perspective are a lie, they're great tools but far from perfect and can totally be broken. - if they show actual pictures (i mean photos) as a reference and explain how the stylize it, it's a green flag. that way you can know where the feature come from and you can chose to implement it in your art or stylize it a bit differently in a way you're more confortable with - If they don't show or allow diversity in the tutorial, huge red flag. Those tutorials that are "boys vs girls" that only shows muscular dudes and thin girls despite people looking all different from one another usually won't teach you how to draw people and be flexible, but only how to draw those particular two archetypes. Even if you only want to draw "pretty white pinterest girl" type of art, those tutorials usually lack precision. - not exactly about tutorials, but remember why you're doing art. Do you want to be a professionnal ? have professionnal skills ? or do you just draw for fun ? What i mean is, don't stress out too much about not progressing fast enough or not having a popular artstyle : not only is progress slow and ugly, but also, you don't have to progress if you don't want to (and don't want to be professionnal). Internet art community can make you feel like it's a competition and you have to constantly get better when doing art for fun is good enough, even if your art isn't "pretty" in the eyes of most internet people. By knowing exactly what you want, you'll find better tutorials and advices to follow. - don't be afraid of testing out things yourself even when they're ugly, your ugly art matters a lot (also not all art are meant to be pretty).

A LOT of people draw within their comfort zone that’s not the CORE issue. Another aspect is that kooleen is openly giving advice to a younger audience that is quite harmful. Also personally as far as handling skin tones it’s not that hard at its core, if you need to grab a pallet or even just ask that’s what matters as well that you’re aware of the fact it’s not your strong suit imo

    @@Lilipad08 100% respect your opinion on this but as a fellow artist and Asian American myself I really don’t understand the argument of having a “personal experience” to explain why some artists tend to stay away from drawing darker skinned characters and/or features common to POC. We know they exist. It’s not like they’re fictional characters. And I know that probably wasn’t the point you were trying to make, but I’ve seen a lot of viewpoints take a stance similar to yours that excuses the lack of character diversity for not having a personal experience with it. I believe you don’t need to have an “experience” (for lack of a better term) whether it’s proximity to POC or whatever. And I definitely don’t think not drawing POC makes a person racist either. Honestly it doesn’t have to be that deep, but the excuse of not being around POC to explain why an artist does not draw POC is kinda baseless. That’s just my opinion though, and if you disagree then we can agree to disagree!

    I, I feel like she Kooleen just discriminated against everyone who has a “gorilla face” -- i.e. people who have more three dimensional facial features than your standard very east Asian person, where the only protruding feature is the nose. But Kooleen isn’t even doing that, she goes the "anime alien head bug eyes" route, or maybe the "webtoon oh no the face is sliding off the head” way describes it better, anyway, not realistic, very stylistic. With apparently zero knowledge of perspective and head angles!!! That beautiful drawing of the black lady in the beginning, not only was her head shape more distinct, she was also tilting her head up. That naturally changes the effing angles! Like, style is fine, but don’t go around claiming yours is the one true way and everything else is garbage! Every opinion is subjective, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and “valid criticism” means f+cking opening your eyes and properly looking at what is before you!!!! And if she says “well I think it’s ugly” well f#ck, I guess she racist. The difference between “eww” and “not my type” is very big, okay... EDIT: I realized that I didn’t express myself well, so I would like to add that her style specifically mirrors the way many Asian girls make themselves look after putting on makeup for taking photos and the photoshopping themselves (which I myself obviously don’t really appreciate). Also, there are many “flawed” facial features like bigger/smaller/flatter/crooked noses, under or overbites, that high cheekbones hollow cheeks look, and so on. And this again comes back to subjective beauty - even then, some horror art can be beautiful and even attractive to certain people, and utterly horrific looking to others. After all, finding something beautiful doesn’t equal wanting to smash it…

She refuses to accept that there are different types of art and different types of styles (I am already against the 'better' artists fixing others art thing so the changing of the face, the most important part of a person really made me mad) Though within the same week of discovering Kooleen I was also introduced to Rin, at first I thought they would be very similar until the more I watched of Rin the better the advice was. Reading the comments, I can see people are having their Twitter moment and misunderstanding what the "drama" is all about, so I'd like to shed some light and whether it reaches the darkness is up to the you. I'd like to note that I'm not familiar with Kooleen (nor Rin), but I think the facts present hold up on their own. A lot of people - Kooleen supporters - are taking it as an attack on Kooleen's style or artistic freedom (i.e., forcing her to draw diverse characters), which is not the truth of the situation. (Though engaging in a little diversity doesn't hurt.) She can draw whatever she wants for herself. The issue arises from the fact that she's making tutorials for _others_ to follow, and that the advice she's given, at least when it comes to faces, is anatomically inaccurate at best and racially insensitive at worst, and has for sure had a negative affect on folks both artistically and mentally. In her facial tutorial she presents us with two figures, one she deems correct and the other she calls "gorilla looking"😒, therefore wrong. "There's no wrong way to do art" is a phrase that I'm sure we artists have heard a thousands times over, but it rings pretty true. By saying the face on the right is wrong, she's cutting off an avenue from learners who look up to her to improve their art by exploring different, very real facial structures. Objectively, that is a normal face - one of many normal faces you can find on real people of any color if you just look outside. She's also cutting off an avenue for anyone with this face shape to feel anything but insecure, which you can see some express in the comments below. Maybe she doesn't like to draw flat faces, and she doesn't have to, but perpetuating that they're wrong to draw is not baller. And despite deeming the "gorilla looking" one wrong, it's actually closer to what a standard skull looks like. The skull typically runs on a fairly straight line down from the forehead and does not slope inward. And while doing all of this, she claims she doesn't draw ugly people which certainly is kind of alarming as many people with this face type are POC. Can POC be ugly? Yes. Can POC with flat faces be ugly? Certainly. But having a flat face doesn't make one ugly by default. So this begs the question, what makes a good, general art tutorial? There's a wide range of styles and techniques so a teacher should try to be fairly broad, unless they're specifically gearing to a particular style, and not bash other ways of doing things. They should be objective and based in reality, using knowledge of actual human anatomy and physiology as a guide so that learners can take that knowledge and mold it to fit their needs - their style. The job of the teacher (sometimes literally) is to provide the learner clay. (Someone that does a great job at this is Sinix, who I recommend whole-heartedly. Whether it be rendering skin or drawing thighs, he's got you covered.) The same should be applied to critique as well. And while I've been inform that Kooleen has hashtags to indicate whether you want her to roast your art or critique it, and that the person who did the painting of the black woman with gold wanted to be roasted, but it seems she was giving critique anyway? What distinguishes the two? (And why would you want your art roasted anyway? Masochism? Self depreciation?) Anyway, if the painting were to be objectively critiqued and not liquefied to fit Kooleen's specific taste, the eyes and brow could stand to be moved forward. The eyes should also appear more like a triangle as the eyelids taper together. Both things that Kooleen did and I'll give her credit for because that was the right move. Everything else... no. *TL;DR You can draw whatever you want, however you want, for yourself, but as someone with a platform made to "educate", you should be weary of bashing other techniques and features, especially when the guidelines you abide by and present for others to follow are not anatomically correct to begin with.* That is all.

    Calling someone with a healthy bone structure (not a mouth breather, basically) a gorilla is insane
