    This is so incredibly iconic. We're literally listening to the ushering in of a new age in Hip Hop. Busy Bee literally didn't know what hit him at all. Kool Moe Dee was young and ferocious in this battle. In the late 70s there were a group of kids that were ready to get the shouting chants era of Hip Hop the fuck outta here and get down on some serious wordplay. Amazing piece of American history.

    9:58 is where I realized for the first time I questioned who really pioneered the rhyme pattern. Don't get me wrong, Rakim and Kool G Rap who are truly the best to ever do it changed the way rappers rapped later on. But we can't ignore what Kool Moe Dee did in 1981. Again, this was 1981!! and he had a rhyme pattern that even the crowd was stunned and didn't know how to react to because they had never heard something like that. No, he's not the best-selling rapper or a household name, but I think Kool Moe Dee deserves his flowers!

    I've told people for years! I had this tape when I was young, we all did. That's where the 2,3 word combinations back to back came from, Cool Moe Dee. Be fore, it was a longer space beteen ryhming words. What else I remeber from that time, I was 11-12, Spoonie G was a lyrical God. You hear Moe Dee mention him in this rhyme against Busy B. I still vividly remember how Spoonie's pattern were coopted also. Go listen to his songs on KZread now. The early rappers never really gave him credit. I've never seen him at Awards Shows or none of that. But I remeber, Spoonie G wasn't a game. TLA Rock either RIP, he died early, 1985

    Damn! This is as CLASSIC as it can get. You have to have been old enough, in the hip hop game as a performer or fan to even comprehend this. I remember it well. Moe Dee made his move to get that acclaimed “Mc. Battle King” of that era.

  • @suave_d
    @suave_d4 жыл бұрын

    I spoke to a reputable historian (Jay Quan) about this battle. He spoke to Moe Dee about this battle, and it was said that Moe Dee regretted how he came at Busy Bee because he felt like he ambushed him. Of course, I understand that prior to this battle, the "old" way of competing was each act getting on stage and performing one at a time (without dissing each other), and the crowd ultimately decided who won. In the true sense of battling (at that time), technically Moe Dee went against the grain, so I can understand him feeling bad about what he did to Busy Bee. What Moe Dee did could probably better be described as "snapping" or "roasting." Still, he brought a new element to battle rap that is still utilized nearly 40 years later. But in my personal opinion, I don't have a problem with what Moe Dee did. In a battle, the goal is to win, and sometimes, you may have to do something unconventional to gain a competitive advantage over your opponent.

    He only felt bad so far as he knew that this was a new style of battling. It was his confidence. This Christmas Rappers Conventiom at Harlem World goes on for weeks, KMD was going around telling people to watch how he was going to floor Busy Bee. That's coming from Chuck D.

    Now in the early 90's he would have destroyed both Tupac,Biggie Smalls. Also Ice Cube easily. The only problems he will have is against Mellie Mel of Furious Five, and of course a tight battle will be against KRS-1 this very day Live on stage. A few years later Busy Bee nearly could not handle a young teenage girl by the name of Roxanne Shante which wasn't a easy victory at all in front of judges such as Red Alert. Actually back in the 1980s at the Rooftop skating rink in Harlem I witness Big Daddy Kane destroy some want to be who never made it with dissing rhyme off the top of his head,and ended it by tossing a subway token at that individual.

    That's true. I remember Jayquan posting a comment from the ORIGINAL NY Tape Man Troy Smith where he commented that Busy Bee was caught off guard in Busy Bee's defense. Kool Moe Dee did come HARD though. Much like reggae, many of the 70's MC's could not adapt to the newer style. People had lyrics in the 80's, no more cocaine fueled Disco chat.

    @@galept Hip Hop started to change when RUN DMC got popular over the addida's lucky brake.. as you will notice their beats are not use in any dubbing or remake of any hip hop rapping. The west coast did take Sponnie Gee's beat and ganster style, west cost hated Run DMC, Then after RUN DMC the following generation started to monetized from hip hop, even tried coming out with own beat and drug dealer style nothing to do with hip hop cuture that only deterriorated HipHop such as MIGOS did, then recording studios got involved and when natural talent dried out, they started inventing technogy to alterate voice over and pattern beats.. just look at Fake Drake, a candian who is not a Hip Hop orgina,l just some rich kid sponsored by family, similar case of a Vanilla ice and Milli Vanilli, sugar hill gang.

    I was listening to "Root Down" Beastie Boys and Mike D name checks this battle in his verse, that's how I came here. D's got a great verse in that song. Glad I came, the party after this battle was not the same ;)
