Koningsdag 2023 is right around the corner and we have questions for King Willem-Alexander!
As Americans who have moved to the Netherlands from the U.S., we love experiencing Dutch culture and Dutch traditions! One of these traditions is celebrating the birthday of the current King or Queen. For almost 10 years, the Dutch have been celebrating King Willem-Alexander’s birthday, which is April 27th. Since Koningsdag is right around the corner, we thought it would be fun to ask the King questions as if he had sat down next to us in a cafe.

Here is my own little anekdote about King Wim-Alex: In 1994 -1995 I did a racing course on the Zandvoort track. Every Saturday morning of the Winter season I drove with a old big engine Ford Taunus V6 2.3 Ghia to Zandvoort and got racing lessons by Tom and Tim Coronel (among others). One Saturday morning a guest pupil was invited to join a lesson. He drove a Citroën AX GT in racing kit and at that morning I could have changed history of the Netherlands... OK I did not of course and he is still alive. 😜😜

@@sim-one Princess Beatrix holds Dutch citizenship. Because of her direct descent from Princess Sophia van de Pals (AK in The UK as Sophia of Hanover), Beatrix (and her sisters ?) can claim British citizenship from birth based on the British Sophia Naturalization Act of 1705 which was repealed in 1948 by the British Nationality Act. A UK court must decide on the claim under that 1705 Act as Beatrix was born in 1938, ten years before repealment in 1948.

Last December I was on a plane frome Greece to NL and there where these special Dutch security guys at the gate which seemed a bit weird. Before we left there was a last person comming on the plane but went to the cockpit and one of those security guys sat in the area where we sat. So it was kinda obvious someone important was on the plane. When we left the plane at Schiphol I asked the guy if it was the King and he sort of smiled and nodded ... He didn't say the King flew the plane but I think he probably did. So to your question: Yes he does secretly fly planes, but you are not being told he does, even afterwards (at least from my experience)

It was a great day and going to work the next was a headache, especially if it was a day shift with a 06:00 a.m. start. The crew has to call him Alex and keep it secret. As the cockpit door keeps closed on all flights today nobody notices. BTW the king is known to like funny videos about the royals so he might be watching ;-).

The gifts are received by 'de stalmeester', the stable master, who is positioned close to the king/queen, but behind a 'conifeer', a large plant, to keep him (or her: stalmeesteres) hidden from cameras. He goes 'thank you, now buzz off', and 'sodemieters' (throws) baked products behind another plant, a rhodondendron. These are later collected and may sustain palace personnel for weeks, or more. The king/queen cannot possibly eat them all. Any non baked good are carefully labeled with all relevant information, especially what it is supposed to be, then archived. All of this was explained by W. Sonneveld in 1973.

A vouple of my answers, yes he rides a bike (duh, he's Dutch!) He rode a bike when he was studying. When you see a comment from 'W.A. van Buren' it's him 😉. I think he didnt mind that he would be kind one day. But one of his brothers when they were kids was asked what he thought about other kids bullying or pestering W.A. once said something like, 'they can do anything to him but don't kill him because then I have to become king' it was jokingly said, and they were kids. But i think he just ment he was glad he wasn't first in line for the throne. 😂 For the rest i would say, write him a letter. He has a sence of humour so who knows, maybe he will answer some of your questions!

At the risk of sounding bitter, and excempting the old school lovers of the dutch royal family no matter who they are, I think for most of us the gift we are sending the royal family by means of 10.5 million euros annually (their 'wage' + salary of their staff + budget for living costs) in the form of our tax money is more than enough of a birthday gift. He (and his family) get this literally just for existing so if he wants a Lego train he'll just have to go buy it himself 🤷‍♂️

Willem Alexander's grandmother, queen Juliana, stayed in her palace Soestdijk during Queensday, with the whole extended family. The family would stand on the "bordes" (= the wide steps to the back-yard entrance) In the garden, while an enormous parade of citizens would pass by, with special gifts. This took at least some hours, and was broadcasted on national television. From all provinces groups would show up, dressed in regional costumes, with show-carts, and special made gifts, etc. Eccentric individuals, and common folks, everybody walked by the Queen and her family. The Queen would occasionally shake hands with people and hold babies in her arms, or pass them to family members. Willem Alexander was still young then and got bored and made mischief with his brothers and nephews. And we all were watching it on TV and were charmed. It was damn cute. The gifts to the Queen were handed over to assistants and, if relevant for a special gift, it would later be mentioned where that gift went to. The abundance of flowers (really a lot) would always be distributed among retirement care homes. Willem Alexander's mother, queen Beatrix, changed that parade custom and went out into the country on Queensday, every year to another town. In 1988 she walked through the crowds on Queensday in Amsterdam, and a young man said to her: "Geef me een zoentje." (= "Give me a sweet kiss.") So they kissed. Here is the 8 second video of that: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZKSsm7SFnJzOgKg.html

I think the nickname might be "lex" :) In his student times he was know for drinking his beer. "prins pils". Een pilsje, being a biertje. The royal family wasn't too proud of that nickname, but it endeared him to most Dutchies, at least a little. The "stiffness" of the royals has majorly decreased over the last ten years, and he has explained that he is very much a family man. I think after the Dutchies accepted him more, he finally grew his beard. I don't think that was "done" under Queen Beatrix. I grew up with her as Queen and she was friendly, kind, but very much protocol. His wife, Maxima, also helped lot with loosening up our Royal house a little. Added some Argentinian swing to it, so to speak. A little flair, and that we sorely needed! Ps: Our king rides his bike every now and then too. So do his daughters to school. For real. They've been raised as normal as was possible. There ARE interviews with them available! Edit to add: They almost always go for a ski vacation in either Lech, (Austria/Oostenrijk) or Griece for warmth somewhere on the coast. I don't exactly remember where.

The Dutch royal family tends to try to give their kids as normal a childhood as possible, doing normal Dutch childhood things, so they all bike at least sometimes. There are plenty of pictures of the king, the queen, their daughters, his mum queen Beatrix and grandma queen Juliana and great-grandma queen Wilhelmina cycling, easy to find if you search for them. If I recall the story correctly that went with the photograph of Wilhelmina on her bike, she loved to get out ahead of the gentlemen of her entourage on her bike, so they tried to declare it unladylike for a queen to ride a bike and she had to give up doing so in public for a while, but still rode in private. The current princesses bike(d) to high school like normal Dutch teenagers - I've seen a picture of each of them setting off on their bike, on their own, on their first day of high school (though they probably had some security following them nearby). My mom went to highschool with princess Beatrix for a year, and that school also taught lots of practical things like biking while holding a second bike to bring it along, and doing the cleanup chores around the school. My mom told one story about how the future queen's dad made her walk home from school one day, when she had refused to do her part of the chores because she said cleaning the bathrooms was beneath a princess' dignity. Her dad the prince-consort sometimes came along with her security detail to pick her up after school, and when he heard that he made her walk al the way home with the security car rolling along slowly behind. So I'd be extremely surprised if the princesses didn't have to do some chores, or didn't get pocketmoney to learn how to handle money, budget and save up for things. Yes, they are rich kids, but the family does try to bring them up as normal people and not spoiled brats - and has done so ever since queen Wilhelmina at least, from what I've heard, though I'm no royalty watcher. Everyone except the heir apparent gets to have a job of their choice and a career, not just to be a hanger-on. The family goes on a yearly skiing trip to the same place in the Austrian Alps, where the press photographers get their halfyearly session for taking a lot of photos for an afternoon, and then are supposed to not hound them for more until the summer photoshoot. Those traditions both started in the previous queen's time and I think it still continues, so that might be a favorite vacation spot despite the sad association with one of the king's brothers falling victim to an avalanche there some years ago.

I used to work as a flight attendant for KLM Cityhopper in the '90's and at one point had enough seniority to be asked to work with him. Ofcourse he did not use his own name (duhh) and ofcourse some extra security was in place. But he was a really nice man to work with. He used to fly the Fokker 70 at the time (also the plane in the picture you use) and the government owned a Fokker 70 as well: PH-KBX. So he could use that for Royal business. (Probably did some of thát royal business in the lav as well 🙂)He now flies a Boeing 737, which is also the current governmental plane PH-GOV.

Willem-Alexander rides a bike and ice skated the 200 km Elfstedentocht (and finished). Generally children in the house of Orange have as normal as possible life. So when growing up, they pay if they buy something and go to "normal" schools. but third level education is also taken at a college in Wales (so they can lead a normal life). Willem's favorite topic at school was history. He had a wild (lots of beer and cigarettes) university life in Leyden. Willem did not want to become a King when he was a teenager. But he eventually did anyway. When the King goes into a bar, or any shop, he generally does not pay himself, somebody else does that for him. The Royal house has its own train and its own touring car with and without a roof. By tradition they usually drove (European) Ford models like the Granada and Scorpio, but Willen also got a severe accident in Germany at high speed in a Volvo. So maybe nowadays it is Volvo. The children get no money until they are eighteen. The eldest gets then 1 million per year (also covering cost of staff), and the others less (I don't know how much, probably half of that. They all ate bitterbal. I don't know about his taste or if he pisses cleanly.

The king does get gifts, most of those (valuable) gifts are being archived, these are gifts from other royal families or head of foreign states. Sometimes he gets gifts from cities and occasionally a gift from a company. The royal family does not only ride a bus, they own a bus. Donated by DAF (a dutch bus and truck builder). He also own a traditional Dutch sailboat, he never uses it but it is a headache because maintenance is incredible expensive and paid by the Dutch navy (what is a bit controversial). When Amalia turned 18 she was entitled to an allowance of 1.6 million, she will return this money until she finishes her study as she think it is inappropriate to collect that money while she doen't work for it.

The best nickname for our king was in his college years royalty press called him prins Pils (prince beer 🍻). And luckily the king doesn’t have that much of a importance in our democracy, yes he still signs legislation, makes state visits and cuts ribbons. But he doesn’t have a saying in the legislation. Even his speech aren’t his own words but those of the minister-president (only at Christmas in his speech is his saying)

Was there a few weeks ago. Took the tow lift they make the yearly photo's, so I have my own Lech photo moment as well 😁 My uncle was a pilot for klm and yearly he did a flying rally (my dad joined a few times as well) and Wim-Lex always tried to join as well whenever he could.
