My grandma once told me there was this relative she didn't like so she randomly told her about these two female priests getting married cos she thought "if she's got such dumb opinions in general, that's surely gonna piss her off". And once she heard a girl talking about her dads on the radio and told everyone how cute she thought that was. She's really "modern" in that aspect but I know many older people are not

i do actually agree with it. gabby. Dutch is not that different from english. I’m Dutch too, and becoming mostly fluent in English was just a little effort for me, and I’d say for the majority of my peers. It is insane though if you think about it, but as a Dutch person I’m just kind of prepared to meet people who can’t speak Dutch on a daily basis, because of all the national students, immigrants and refugees.

It's not really surprising at all. Amsterdam is world-famous, so they're full of tourists. And English is the common international language, so it's prudent to learn it if it's not your mother tongue. And I'm pretty sure they're required to learn it in school. And I've heard they play tons of American TV shows and movies there which they've been watching unddubbed their entire lives. So I would be shocked if they weren't fluent in English. Nothing to be impressed about, lol

Yeah, English is everywhere in the Netherlands. I started English classes in 7th grade, but I think I mostly learned it through consuming American/British media like tv, film, music, KZread videos, games, etc. from a very young age.

I moved to the Netherlands a couple of years ago, I can confirm that life here as a gay man is pretty good. My University professor is gay and really made me realize that I can reach far here regardless of sexuality. At work, people are pretty cool with it even when I at first was kind of discreet about having a boyfriend. I look forward to marrying my boyfriend here in the future.

I could probably count the number of genuinely homophobic people I've met on two hands, if not on one. I'd say the only really homophobic places here are biblebelt villages and Islamic neighborhoods in bigger cities.

Just to clarify something - at the end you said that homophobic violence has increased in 2016, but this is not necessarily true. In reality it's just that more cases have been reported. This can be seen to be a success as it shows that the Pink in Blue system has been successful in allowing more cases to be reported and persecuted.

Nadjia Omori It’s Amsterdam - I will give it that you will not get this exact response in smaller cities and rural areas of the country. If you have a problem with LGBT+ then Amsterdam is the final place you need to be. I’ve never felt in any way unsafe holding hands with my partner there or making it known that we’re a couple - it’s just part of the fabric of Amsterdam.

@@boyboy6123 Yes 'hating' someone for their sexuality - something which they can't control - is indeed quite offensive. They're not harming anyone, so why would you be against it? It's actually less damaging if you do let people live their life true to their sexuality, so they won't have wreck a family in their 50s when they finally give in to their feelings. I totally get where "anti"-lgbt people come from, they're raised with the idea those relationships are unholy or something, but if you can't give a better reason than "you find it icky" or "it's against God" you don't have an argument. (I realise you never said any of this, you were probably hinting at the fact A'dam is too far left. But in this case, being open minded to lgbt people is actually the right thing to be.

As a gay expat that lives in Amsterdam, I can vouch for the Dutch and say that they are some of the friendliest and most accepting people I know.

@@shallowsuns Our people's response to the LGBT+ is actually quite varied. In general, I think it's tolerated, but being "gay" is not as accepted. There are so many openly gay and transgender people here, and people don't necessarily treat them any different. For instance, gay men would run the designing and entertainment businesses because they're so skillful and funny. However, majority of the population are Christians so they still hold bigoted views on these people. You would often hear them call the gay people "bakla" (gay) as if they're a separate entity, and make those stereotypical assumptions about them daily. But like in most countries, there are definitely a growing number of allies, especially in the youth, for the community due to the influence of the west. I still know a lot of people who are against it, but just as many who love and accept all the queer people. But that is just my personal view on it based on my experiences.

I’ve honestly been so pleasantly surprised at how kind and accepting people are. Even the people who aren’t 100% on board, still have a respectful attitude. She meant, only gay friends, not lesbian or trans etc. Also it's not actually that big of a deal for older people to not be homophobic. Lots of older people are accepting. It's just harder for them because of the environment they grew up in. Russians have a similar problem but people aren't so surprised when a Russian person isn't homophobic.

Honestly, I've been to Amsterdam a number of times with my same sex partner and I've never once felt threatened or even the slightest bit uncomfortable. I'm from the UK where attitudes are mostly fine but Amsterdam is one of the very few places where we both feel completely comfortable and at ease. I absolutely love the Netherlands and its people.

As I live in Belgium and regularly travel to the Netherlands, I got a bit upset when the girl said “I’m proud we were first in something”. Dutch were first in many things, for example - they invented the principles of the capitalist society, and were the first ones to have such society back in 18-th century. So, they have a lot to be proud of, especially when it comes to building an advanced and respectful society. The Netherlands is an example of well organised country, with a perfect infrastructure. And I love that country.

It leads to people having the brain of one gender and their body not matching that gender, creating dysphoric feelings. @@ivanstefko2724 It's doable to de-radicalize the conservative muslim population without trumping their freedom of religion: promote mixed neighborhoods, help them participate more in society, prohibit foreign funding of religious organisations, get rid of state-funded schools with an ideological backgrounds, etc. The first few examples will aid in making people feel more included so that they are less separated by their own cultural in-group. The other examples are about decreasing the power that religious institutions hold over these communities.

I’ve been to 8 countries in my lifetime (25 y/o) and Amsterdam was the only city where I felt the most accepted as an openly gay man. Most people really accept you for who you are over there! Whether you’re gay, black, Jewish, poor, transgender, etc. It’s definitely crowded as hell but people are so friendly and open-minded and I would love to go back. In the end what matters more is the content of your character

I don't like saying that a certain country should be the model, because every single country has lots of problems to fix, but every time I hear news about The Netherlands is about how advanced they are, their high life quality, how good the education is (just take this video as an example where everyone is fluent at english when it's not even their original mother tongue)

i am dutch and politiclly active, yes we have flaws and can do better to me (a Democratic socialist) mostly on or way we handly privatisation and unbound capitalism. but our way our infrastructure is done yes other countries need to definitely look at our infrastructure policies and learn from it.

As a Dutch (LGBT) teenager, for me it seems like, unlike how it is in most countries, it’s the younger teenagers (mainly teenage boys) that are the most homophobic, not the elderly. I mean of course we still have homophobic elderly, but it seems like more and more they’re just like “eh” about it while the straight teenage boys would be out there bullying people or making stupid and hurtful jokes and calling it disgusting. Not to say all or most are like that, I’m very happy to live in this accepting country, it’s just an interesting observation.

I think the only thing I don’t like about LGBTQ+ title is that it puts a spotlight on people’s sexuality and I feel like I have to explain something I don’t need to explain to people , can I just dress and act and date who I want without having to explain myself ...

I didn't watch the Russian opinions about LGBTQ+, because I am a bisexual person born and still in Russia, so I know it all already through my experience. Just want to wholeheartedly say thank you to both friendly people in the video and allies here in the comments. In the end of the day, I don't want anyone to discuss my sexuality or gender identity, because I just want to be comfortable enough to not even worry about that. Spread peace, no hate or propaganda 🧡🧡🧡

Last year I traveled to the Netherlands. Beautiful country ✨ 😍. I will never forget it! And yes I can confirm that people there are more open minded about this because you can see rainbow flags quite often. 🏳️‍🌈 Sometimes they are visible but I have spotted tiny hand drawn rainbow flags on bus stations etc.

I must say. That smile face facial mask featured your guys really well. Especially, when you guys dancing together with that facial masks on, it looks fabulously funny, awkwardly cute. Plus, proud of the rainbow shining at Netherlands, all of us around the world were need that.

Did yall know that since a couple of days in switzerland its also illegal to bully gay people? Me living in switzerland is very proud about that lol

@@Jojo-lr5yc I think it's definitely more equal than with elder people, but still not quite. I live in a mid-sized city about an hour from the Randstad, and I've met some teens/twenty-somethings that barely spoke a word in English. Also I've noticed in Amsterdam, young people had much less of an accent when talking English, compared to most young people near my hometown or in Groningen were I lived for a while.

As a gay man from the US, this was actually so very heartwarming. I thin Amsterdam is a prime example of a what a evolved, educated, inclusive first world country looks like! Hope I can visit someday.

If they have the same mindset to support castration for children and doesn't have problem with gay marriage or any homosexual activity there is a high chance you won't be alive because obviously a bond between a man and women is the only strong bond that can create a whole life

I grew up in the Netherlands, I don't know if it has been the same for other dutch people but damn my life was gay. In my school there's always been several events about the LGBT we were taught about accepting it and normalize it. People in my class are often like 'I think I'm straight but there's always a chance that I'll eventually start liking the same gender or even another gender.' I like how they're open about the LGBT community and aren't afraid not be non heterosexual uwu.

I've just seen a similar video from Moscow... so to come back here was such a relief

Pink in Blue is not a separate group, they are all over the country as usual policemen and policewomen. But when something happens and you want to report it, it is good to do it with someone who understands. The issue does not have to have a relation with sexual orientation, but with feeling at ease and without fear of discrimination. Of course they communicate with each other and share knowledge and experience. This approach may have as effect that more incidents are reported, because the police is more accessible. Like asking for a police(wo)man that speaks your language, knows your culture, or has the same skin color, that can be easier in communication.

i just wanna maybe provide somewhat of an answer to the rise in hate crimes, which is simply because theyre more reported nowadays compared to 10 years ago. we shouldnt be looking at the volume of hate crimes but the hate crimes committed per capita to judge the increase better and to clarify an estimate on how many of each year are potentially not reported or simply aren't given enough evidence to even call a hate crime. theres alot of factors in this kinda issues that even today, nearly 4 years later, we are still looking at

I'm not often proud to be Dutch, but sometimes, like in this instance, I am quite happy to be part of the population. Weird thing about legalizing something... when people start to become more open minded about things, the people who are against it will start to push back even harder, trying to prove that they are the ones who are right. This shows in numbers of violence, happens when people start feeling threatened... Love is love, live your lives to the best of your abilities

In Canada too! Everywhere I go... in St. John’s Newfoundland, there were SO many straight people at the pride parade in support of the LGBT community. Hell, I made so many friends. Canada was also one of the countries to first legalize gay marriage. I think around 13 years ago? (Don’t @ me if I’m wrong) but yeah. I’m out to everyone there and they’re all so supportive.

Now this puts a smile on my face, knowing that at least some people out there are openly accepting of others regardless of what or who they like, or what they strive to be, because in the end, sexuality and race doesn't matter in the day to day life (besides your romantic/intimate life lol), so why should others care? It doesn't destroy nobody's culture and nor does harm anyone & a lot of other countries have smth to learn from such examples like Netherland yknow? Be friendly and think on your own, don't jump onto the hate hype-train just because somebody told you that someone is gross because of their appearance. Judge the individual, not the whole wide group.

I can totally understand how it sucks if you hear those ideas every day. Have you ever confronted those people (if they're in your friend group or family)? Chances are they're just joking/messing around and don't know you don't like it.

I'm Dutch myself and yes we are very open and positive about LGBT, among people my age (20ish) being gay or bi is actually becoming some sort of trend. Although it does depend a lot on where you are, the bigger cities like Amsterdam are super proud and positive but if you where to ask these questions in the countryside the responses might be less positive sadly.
