It was a little one, a juvenile. There are people who live on the island. Me? I spent several hours on the island, hiking through the jungle, swimming at one of the beaches, and was VERY happy to leave. At the time, we didn't know they were poisonous, on top of their very septic saliva. It was a trip of a lifetime, and I lived to tell the tale.

Just a hypothesis, but a lot of lizards that spend time near water like to defecate in bodies of water. Which is probably why it was in the bathroom as it looked like the tub still had enough water in it.

Just to give some context, you're quite likely to die a slow painful death if a Komodo Dragon bites you. No joke. They can be very aggressive and dangerous. Having one of those in your house is a real problem to deal with.

The Komodo dragon, scientifically known as Varanus komodoensis, is a remarkable reptilian species that holds the distinction of being the largest extant lizard on the planet. Endemic to the Indonesian islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Gili Motang, and Padar, this awe-inspiring creature belongs to the Varanidae family, which encompasses various monitor lizard species. Now, let's delve into the notable characteristics and features that define the Komodo dragon: 1. Size and Morphology: Renowned for its imposing stature, the Komodo dragon can reach lengths of up to 10 feet (3 meters) and weigh an average of 150 pounds (70 kilograms), although exceptional individuals may exceed these measurements. Sporting a robust and muscular build, it possesses a lengthy and formidable tail. Its skin exhibits a coarse texture, adorned with a range of hues such as gray, brown, or green, allowing for effective camouflage within its environment. 2. Habitat and Distribution: Komodo dragons thrive in diverse habitats, including tropical forests, savannas, and grasslands. These remarkable reptiles primarily inhabit the Indonesian archipelago's Komodo National Park, where they benefit from protective measures. 3. Dietary Patterns: As carnivorous predators, Komodo dragons display a varied diet. While they frequently scavenge carrion, they are also accomplished hunters, preying on an array of live animals. Their menu may encompass deer, pigs, water buffalo, and smaller reptiles. Notably, their saliva contains bacteria with toxic properties, assisting in the incapacitation or demise of their prey. Equipped with sharp, serrated teeth, they adeptly tear through flesh. 4. Behavioral Insights: Komodo dragons are solitary beings and predominantly active during daylight hours. Exceptionally developed olfactory senses and keen vision enable them to locate food sources effectively. Beyond their terrestrial prowess, they exhibit exceptional swimming skills, seamlessly navigating both land and water domains. 5. Reproductive Mechanisms: Female Komodo dragons construct nests by excavating holes into the ground, typically in sandy areas. Following an incubation period lasting approximately 7-8 months, the female guards the nest until the eggs hatch. Hatchlings measure around 12-15 inches (30-38 centimeters) in length and swiftly seek refuge in trees for enhanced safety. 6. Conservation Status: Recognizing the ecological significance of Komodo dragons, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has designated them as a vulnerable species. Threats such as habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflicts necessitate conservation initiatives, including the establishment of protected areas and stringent regulations, aimed at safeguarding their populations. The Komodo dragon captivates us with its remarkable attributes and occupies a crucial niche within its native ecosystems. Efforts to ensure the preservation of this awe-inspiring species are imperative for the sake of biodiversity and ecological equilibrium.
