Can i just mention how insanely lucky Ben's top decks were? He keeps a hand with 1 land then misses only a single land drop over the next 7 turns (with only 1 extra draw), including drawing into a thran dynamo. Then when he goes for his big double mana turn draws 5 of the following 6 cards: Great Whale, Peregrine Drake, Palinchron, Teferi, Agent, Trait Doctoring.

Keeping a 1 lander in draft and getting rewarded happens way to often to me why can't that spill over to other formats?

For those interested, the origin story for new Shane is that original Shane was targeted with a spell while Orvar was in play and a token copy (new Shane) was put into play.

Shane gave the game to Ben by not correctly assessing the threats and doing the classic blue error of absolutely wanting to counter something during their opponents turn if they left some mana open for that because otherwise it feels like it was wasted. I know Ben's board wasn't impressive but I assume people to know better that letting someone untapping with an Orvar on the board without interaction ready is a big no-no.

As a long-tome Orvar player: I can confirm, do NOT let us untap with Orvar and make sure you have interaction!

The blue players did what they had to by controlling the board and countering the big spells. But I have to say that you were cornered by having to deal with Orvar AND Koma both of which are high priority targets.

Koma is a suitable name because it is a perfect description of how it feels to play against it.

Koma Stax can be brutal for sure, definitely coma-inducing. Though Koma Clones is a lot less of a headache(in a different way) and more fun of a build imo.

@@lokumo13 In the end it's just all about playing the commanders you like, so there's nothing inherently wrong with playing a staxy Koma, especially in cEDH. But in the end, Koma is such a powerful commander that synergizes with itself so well that I think it should only be understandable that it will draw a lot of attention if you decide to play it as your commander.

Did you previously beat Old Shane down with Titania or something? Those were very aggressive counter spells for relatively low impact plays. IMO counter spells are reserved only for game ending plays or to protect key game pieces. Otherwise I just let my opponents do their thing. That's what removal is for.

I think it's the mentality of "if I let my turn start with untapped lands, my last turn would've been wasteful", so they feel like they MUST blow their counterspells on the player to the right, as to not "waste" the mana that was up.

Why was Orvar not focused into the ground? I have never seen a version of it that isn't the classic "don't target me, I got nothing" then they go infinite a single turn.

As a major lover of orvar, that is exactly the best description of their gameplay. I literally just sit with an empty board until "oops i win"

I love how Ben is just straight chilling, playing lands, and everyone else is hitting someone in the head with a club. I like Orvar, but I had to admit that I'm pretty bad with "Combo Decks". Without Andrew to explain, probably I wouldn't understand a thing.

Loved watching this game. I have Koma and Orvar irl so to see them go against each other was entertaining. Currently working on a K'rrik Shadowborne Apostles build so it was nice to see him included as well in the match up, accompanied by Muddstah's Titania I also quite enjoy watching!

Was that the Shanes first time playing against Orvar? They're always a target for me because pretty much every deck is the same, draw go until they cast Orvar and go infinite. Shane should have tapped the Dynamo with his spare coil at the very least.

Just wanted to add loved the background music for this one Andrew - quality stuff!

Also Koma is just such an easy mode commander it’s absurd. Oooohh a simic ramp and control deck with a wincon that protects itself, what a good play experience for the whole table

Eh, could be said about many commanders. One thing Koma hates dealing with is Clone Legion type of effects because from that point on the player who cast it becomes the hard target of the OG Koma player. And another downside is without Koma, the deck is not necessarily always a Simic good stuff so it'll have to figure out a way to get the Koma back in the case it was stolen. I have both an Orvar and a Koma deck in paper and although the ramp was scary on Koma player's side, the Orvar player was untouched and was allowed to ramp consistently as well, which imo can be more impactful in one turn, as Koma doesn't do much going on for it when it comes in unlike Orvar. Not to mentioned MonoU Orvar tends to have more direct win lines than Koma. Tapping Orvar dynamo on upkeep would probably have slowed them down for one turn, with a big "maybe".

@@lokumo13 Orvar is very powerful, but it’s easy to interact with and if orvar is not out the deck is much weaker. Koma can just be simic good stuff and is still super strong, plus when koma comes down (uncounterable- WHY?) and protects itself really well, it’s just an inevitable conclusion that takes awhile to end the game- either you steal koma or you die. Koma feels a lot like prime time to me in the way it plays tbh- when it hits the table, everyone fights to steal or clone it because it’s just so powerful

@@Spirited_skiing Oh yeah, Koma is hard to deal with for sure, starts with being uncounterable, which is huge. And yeah the longer the game runs it becomes harder to deal with, but it very unlikely win games the turn in comes in, which is why I see Orvar a bigger threat in that sense. You're right though, a Koma deck functions better without Koma on the field when compared to an Orvar deck, but Orvar can hit the field before Koma can in most cases-not that that relates to the points made earlier. As for Stax v Clones, to each their own but yeah, clones are a strong strat in EDH(Esp in Koma with Sakashimas, Spark Double, Double Major, Biovisionary, Esix, Helm, ParLives, and now the Mirror Box) but it is a lot less restrictive when compared to pure stax, which is why I called it less of a headache.

I like that you're trying out new music! I felt like this song didn't quite fit the mood of the game, but don't let that stop you from continuing to try new things!

This game shows exactly why i took apart my Orvar deck... it isn't quite CEDH but it is just too combo heavy for most tables to have a fun game.

I guess people don't run too many bounce or exile spells. I've never seen the issue with Koma in my playgroup. There's a fair bit of exile removal spells out there. So much so that my black/white decks are mostly off of destruction based removal. But that's just my experience.

What happened to the Font of Agonies? It suddenly disappeared, and it should have had 3-4 counters on it.

My good friend in out playgroup has an Orvar deck. It’s so strong and annoying to deal with and can come out of nowhere and lock people out, even when set behind the entire game. I only now use my Tergrid deck when he plays Orvar as it’s equally degenerate and my best hope most of the time of being able to match his tempo.

While I like your regular music, this was a nice change of pace. Please keep up the great work!

He could have sacced a serpent to target his boots. With the ability unable to be activated his opponent couldn't equip it to a new target even if he had control of it and Shane's Koma would keep the hexproof and not be stolen.

Wouldn't work. Tapping the Palinchron to remove the activated ability doesn't stop the one already on the stack.

He probably had enough floating mana for one Palinchron activation, and could activate immediately or in response to Koma's ability. Abilities that are already on the stack before Koma's ability resolves won't be affected.

@@krotash7740 Yeah, you’re right. Shane could have targeted the lands though with the untap trigger on the stack. That would have put and end to the untap shenanigans full stop.

I'm assuming he meant that he probably should have tutored for Tireless Tracker for clues instead of Tireless Provisioner for treasures.

I am not sure about this, but how was it possible for New Shane to extort two times? The screecher has only extort on itself being cast. It doesn't give extort to other spells. Maybe i have missed something and i'm pretty sure, it wouldn't have changed the outcome, but still it might not have been correct.

Why New Shane didnt casted the K'rrik turn 2 with dark ritual?

Extort K'rrik build is so bad. Also, Cabal coffers is fun and all but trust me, you want lands that produce mana. If you want your SWAMPS to do more for you use Bubbling Muk or/and Crypt Ghast. it's sad how important Cavern of Souls is to K'rrik.

Can we get a CW for folks playing their equipment/auras wonky too?! xD Sass aside the videos and games are always some level of great so I don't really mind, peeves sure are interesting though.

I personally run Naru Meha as my commander over Orvar but I can definitely see why people run him especially after this game

The game winning combo doesn't work - Naru Meha doesn't cast the copied spell, it gets put onto the stack. This means Orvar doesn't trigger on the copied sublime epiphany because he only copies permanents that are targeted when a spell is cast. There are some copying spells that do work with Orvar, but they need to state that you cast the copy in order to get his trigger.

Orvar is irrelevant here. Naru meha and epiphany goes infinite alone. Epiphany can also make copies of creatures. So cast epiphany, hold priority and cast naru meha. Naru meha etbs and makes a copy of epiphany. The copy resolves, making one oponent draw and creating a copy of naru meha which then etbs and copy the original epiphany again...

Orvar got some great top decks. As an Orvar player, it's hard to play the game when Orvar cannot be used so there are some low mana value ways to turn it off for mono-green answers: The standard Lignify and Kenrith's transformation, you can use Bloodthirsty Blade to Goad it into a bad block, you can Liquimetal Coating + any artifact removal, Brittle Effigy, you can Chaos Wand their Buyback spells onto your creatures. As always, Holistic Wisdom can turn a dead card into any piece you need for the things listed above. Sorry Orvar players, sometimes we just need to be stopped. :D

Pretty much went as expected.... very uninteresting. Do nothing, don't seem like a threat then combo off in a single turn. Very very questionable counter spells here, perhaps some grudges carrying over from a previous game. The only swing that made sense was against the yawgmoth player due to the extort threat, despite the poor player pretty much doing nothing all game :L

Orvar is just a broken commander, really unfun.

I didnt enjoy this episode at all, there was almost zero interaction and then someone combos off twice.

With how Ben popped off out of no where, steal cards and worst of all, aggressively grab other peoples cards... Not a fan of Ben

Agreed, the cuts where I saw him practically lunging across the table made me uncomfortable even though I primarily proxy.

Typical Koma deck hahaa. Control till you can cast de Serpent. Also, i find Double Major to be way too cheap in terms of mana cost ...2 mana instant which gives the finger to the legendary rule. UNBAN GRISELBRAND.
