Ғылым және технология

Russia's newest combat helmet. A harsh necessity, but a technological step backwards.

Very interesting, although you mention the helmet stops 9x18 Makarov from an APS but the footage seems to show it stopping a 9x21mm Gyurza being fired from a SR-1 Vector, which is more closer to .357 Mag then 9x18 Mak ballistically.

Those are not issued by Russian armed forces in current conflict. I only saw used by Ukrainian pro-Russian separatists who took out from old soviet warehouses in Ukraine and the SSH-68’s used for training in camps for new enlisted.

It's officially rated to Br2, which is 5 consecutive hits of 9×21mm Gyurza 7N28 lead-core ammo from an SR-1 Vektor, pretty good imo. There's even tests of it stopping 9x39 AP rounds.

@@Fairfax_kit Just wondering, do you know how sizes on these work? I've seen photos of some with size markings on the label, but most, including mine, don't have any size info anywhere. Are they just one size fits all?

@@muwuny i can't say for certain. the older 6b14 used large and extra large shells for manufacture, so the large with kevlar became a medium and the XL became a large, the aramid filling in space inside and making the head fitment smaller. It's probably the same on the Kolpak but I have no definitive proof.

@@Fairfax_kit yeah i bet. not sure why people are trash talking it, helmets are supposed to stop fragmentation, bullet resistance is nice and all but most rounds are 5.56x45 and 5.45x39, no helmets are stopping those rounds anyway. the fragmentation protection of the kolpak should be sufficient for its intended purpose.

@@alphawolfgang173 I've heard unconfirmed reports of this helmet surviving a subsonic 9x39 round...obviously take that with a grain of salt. As for all the trash talking, I think it's a case of the uninformed looking for something to propagate about how "bad" Russian equipment is. There's a lot of propaganda trying to frame the russians as issuing trash gear, and that MUST be the reason they're failing in Ukraine. But russia's failures arent a result of their body armor...this is a fine helmet.

I look forward to a dissection of it if you find another one. How many layers of aramid are in it? is it aramid or UHMPWE fibers? I believe I saw some kind of plastic like liner between the mesh and the ballistic fibers?

  • @Fairfax_kit

A lot of info came to light that I wasn't originally aware of, but it seems that they exclusively use UHMPWE as opposed to kevlar. Russian documentation claims that this helmet can stop 7.62x25 and 9x21...not bad all things considered. I really should amend the info in this video, and I probably will if I get another one to shoot at.

A nation that can afford the nuclear arsenal that Russia has can afford nods for their troops. It's just not their number one priority. Also the Russian doctrine revolves heavily around night vision scopes on rifles, which allows for passive aiming, at the cost of nighttime situational awareness.
