Kolkata: rap, graffiti & street-art in the cultural capital of India
When your first street art was made from cow dung. When step-relatives try to kill you because of the inheritance by adding poison to baby food. When you paint your graffiti with a brush and a roller along with an aerosol. When you can draw on almost any wall, and no one will complain.
The documentary “Walls of Bengal: Street Art and Graffiti in Kolkata” is the result of a week spent in the capital of West Bengal together with artists, street rappers, graffiti artists, with a camera on.
Through the stories of its heroes, the film tells about what street art of Kolkata was decades ago, and how did it change when it met Western movements.
Kolkata is one of the most peculiar cities of India. Built by the British in the European style it became the capital of art and culture in this exotic country. And also the capital of social movements and protests. Being the poorest of India’s megacities, the city of trams and walking rickshaws still retains its spirit and its style.
From filming to final editing, this documentary was made by Vasiliy Kondrashov, a journalist from Moscow and editor of “Passenger”, Russian travel and street culture online magazine (passenger.rocks). We already told our readers about metalheads of Sri Lanka and hardcore in Azerbaijan, subcultural Tashkent and punk travels in India, and now we realized: subcultures in Asian countries are one of the important topics for us.
The film “Walls of Bengal” can be considered the next chapter in this long story. And certainly not the last.

Seen SHOCK up in Kolkata off the train! I was super nervous painting india but got a few spots In. It’s hard for me to paint such a beautiful city but I stuck to walls off the train line and made sure I didn’t go over any old signs. Such a great place!
