Student: Yoshiko Ueda
Venue: Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía, Madrid (Spain) 16/10/2010
E. Ysaÿe: Violin sonata in E minor op. 27 no. 4 - I. Allemanda. Lento maestoso
Abstract:
In this fragment of the masterclass, they work on the character of the beginning, insisting on the speed of the bow, the energy in both upbow and downbow and the clarity of the notes. The sound should be loud and with energy, not relaxing. Blacher comments the ways to enter in the string and how it changes the character. The vibrato should be faster in order to keep the energy. He shows some exercises to improve the vibrato.

The key point I heard is to catch the strings on all the notes with an intense vibrato. It makes the sound clear and echo. Well demonstrated, Professor Kolja Blacher!
