Koi | Gouache illustration

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Koi illustration // gouache painting (and a bit of coloured pencils)
The third and last painting of a series of illustrations I created, with a different animal, flower and metallic colour for each.
For this illustration I chose the Japanese carp, waterlily flower and silver metallic colour to combine all together. Enjoy !
This series has come to an end, I loved the idea of making a series of illustrations so I'll definitely make more in the future!!
I can't wait to create and share more illustrations in the future!

This is such a beautiful and intricate piece of work, I love it! It's really nice to see the re-working of areas you weren't quite happy with, it gives a more realistic idea of what painting is like :)

ahahah I hoped that no one would have noticed that I re-worked few times on different areas until I was satisfied xD I had some struggles painting the carp because I couldn't painting it exactly how I wanted and how it looked in my head. For example if I would do the painting again, I would leave more white! A common thing I'm sure many artists experience ahaha :D Fortunately gouache allows you to fix your mistakes especially as long as the colours you're using are the same. The paper has also resisted my several brush strokes! I'm very glad to hear that it was nice to see instead! Thank you so much! :)

It shows a more realistic process of painting and it's comforting for beginners (like me :D ) to know that even when someone paints amazing things like you, mistakes are still part of the process. A lot of other art youtubers I watch, it seems like they don't make mistakes, and its very demotivating when I paint and I constantly makes mistakes, so thank you for that! :D

Ahh I see!! Yes I understand, it can be demotivating when you see the other artists doing no mistakes but you keep making them, it looks too perfect but in reality it's impossible to not make mistakes! I'm sure all artists don't want to show their mistakes and weak points, I guess it's not appealing to watch...? I love how the fish and everything turned out at the end, despite the fact I had to rework on some areas. And I'm not gonna lie, I felt frustrated that I had to fix the fish several time because I couldn't painted in the way I wanted!! So I'm glad that indirectly with the video, I reassured you that is totally okay to make mistakes! I usually sketch and make colour tests before jumping into the painting, to avoid any future mistakes. Although.. most of the time I make mistakes or changes in my painting process! :D and that's totally okay, it's a learning process and you learn from your mistakes! :)

Holy smokes, this is so great! I only recently started using gouache and am trying to incorporate it more on my channel. Everyone always says it’s like a hybrid between watercolor and acrylic but I truly TRULY did not understand why until just now, seeing you layer really thing washes, especially for the background? I’ll have to try that. Right now I’m super duper struggling with trying to accurately and reliably mix colors but....seeing the way you layered, and how you especially did it to build up the scales of the fish before then going in afterwards to tidy up with opaque? Fantastic. I know this is just a beautiful speed paint, but I really learned a lot about the capabilities of a medium I’m struggling with from this!

  • @sandraruberto8806

Hello!! It's so interesting to see what you got and learned from my video and my painting process, amazing!! In truth, I builded up the layers on the scales's carp because I had struggles on painting it exactly how I wanted and how it looked in my head, with the result that I had to work on it several times as you saw. However, I did layer opaque washes at first so I could still see the fish's scales and slowly reach the colour's consistency I wanted, to avoid making mistakes and doing the painting all over again, since I wasn't too sure how to layer the colours on the carp. With gouache can always build up the opacity and transparency going on top with thicker paint, but you can't do the opposite! This is why exactly as you said, gouache behaves both as watercolour and acrylic. Like for the background instead, I used thicker gouache like if I was using acrylic! The more water you add, the more transparent the paint will be! Thank you so much your comment, I'm very happy to to know that my video helped you to learn more about gouache's capability!! :D Are you having struggles with mixing colours? tell me more about it! Maybe I can help you :)

Sandra Ruberto it’s really interesting that the part I found most useful was watching you spend time trying to fix a problem! I didn’t know you were having difficulty, it just looked like you were doing what you’d always meant to. Seeing your thought process and seeing you be able to make changes is really valuable for me, though! I feel like I can fix any mistake with watercolor or ink because I know how those work so well it’s easy, but with gouache i feel like I’m a beginner with no knowledge...which is true! And really fun and exciting for me (I really like to learn new things.). I’m having a little problem with mixing colors, but I think it’s a little bit because I’ve been working with watercolors before this, and a little bit because I’m working from dried paint instead of fresh paint. With watercolor, you just make the paint lighter by adding more water and letting the white of the paper show through, so I’m not used to thinking about how much white to add. Eventually, I do mix the color I want, it just takes a little more time than I expect it to. The REAL problem is because I’m working from dried paint, when I mix the right color i don’t make enough, and when I need to make more of that color I have a really hard time making the same color again. Mixing the same color I’ve made before is the hardest part right now! But I’ve only tried doing it a couple of times, so I think a lot of the problem is that I need more practice. I can do this!!! I’m going to get better!!!!

  • @sandraruberto8806

It's so interesting to see how people perceive differently my video!! and if I think about it, it's also quite funny xD I hoped nobody would have noticed I was trying to fix a problem. I got a comment someone did lol but she said it was nice to see that because it gave a more realistic idea of what painting is like! And I see what she meant! So fixing my mistake turned out to be helpful and valuable for someone's else, awesome!! With gouache you can work with different layers with different opacity and yes it allows you to fix your mistakes as well, like with watercolour! Ahhh I see what you mean!! I'm the opposite, from gouache I tried painting with watercolour afterward and I couldn't get used to the fact I needed to pick up the colours from the dry paint, so it took me ages to reach the amount of paint I needed if I didn't want it to be too watery. Instead with gouache I can quickly spread directly out of the tube the amount of paint I need, add water and then work right away! Maybe it can help you, you can also add water with gouache to get a lighter paint, it will be more transparent but depending of the colour you want then you might don't need to add white! Maybe also, I don't know if it can helps but trying to mix only a couple of colours together at first, so if you don't make enough and you need to recreate that colour again, you know exactly what colour tubes you used! I remember I had the same problem with gouache at first, sometimes I didn't make enough paint and it was hard to recreate the same colour again. But with practice over the years, I learned how to manage the amount of colour I need to create and if I don't make enough colour, it became easier to make the same colour again! So as you said and I agree, making enough colour it's something you learn by practice to get used to how the medium work! You know I can relate to you. As a beginner with watercolour when I mix the right colour it's never enough and it's hard to make the same colour again. So I'm going through your same problem but with watercolour :D How particular is that we're having the same problem with different medium!! But it's true, that to get used to and master a new medium you just need to try and practice it! I also need to practice more with watercolours! We both are going to get better for sure!! :D

Sandra Ruberto see, for me, making enough of a color with watercolor is so easy! I usually have a mixing palette with me with deep wells, and I put a lot of water in those wells, then make the color I need. Actually, it might help you to watch any of my inktober videos, because like you recommend I used very few colors so it was easier to get what I want, and you can see my method for working to layer the paint in ways that help to build up the color until I’m happy. Yes, we are both going to get better!! It just takes practice, and patience, and apparently advice from people on the internet. =>.

  • @sandraruberto8806

Ohh I see, I also use quite deep wells but I've never though to add water first and then the colour! I always added water after xD I'll try that, thank you!! And I will check your videos out as well! thanks :D My main problem with watercolour is that I can't never achieve define edges when I paint as I do with gouache. With gouache I get such precise lines and define details, which I find hard to accomplish with watercolour. Of course gouache and watercolour are different, so maybe I just need to appreciate that this is how watercolours are meant to be. But I was wondering if it has something to do with the paper or the brush I use. Or maybe I use too much water with the paint I don't know. I usually use rough grain 300 gsm paper, maybe if I would use a smoother texture that could resolve my problem, but I personally don't like using smoother paper and I feel like I wouldn't achieve those beautiful watercolour effects on a smoother paper! I don't know if you have any suggestion or tip you can give me, but anyway thank you! I appreciate your help!! :D

this is so awesome! great work as always. I think this is the only video I ever watched on yt that I played on slower speed because I wanted to more clearly how you laid down the brush strokes. I LOVE the details on the flowers and the water current pattern inside the triangle. I have a question, if you don't mind-- how long do these pieces in this series take you to finish, from making the sketch to putting down the last detail?

  • @sandraruberto8806

    @sandraruberto8806

Thanks!! ahahah thank you for watching on normal speed! xD I speed up my painting process to make the video as short as possible (so it's not too boring to watch lol) but I hope you still could get something helpful out of it! Otherwise if you have any question don't hesitate to ask me :) I love adding details and decorations to make richer my illustrations! :D Sure you can ask!! You're lucky because I always forget to track my time when I work, you know... to have an idea how much time it actually takes me to create my illustrations! Fortunately I tracked the time for this illustration and I can tell you it took me about 3 hours for sketching and about 7 hours for painting. I had to retouch the carp several times because I wasn't satisfied at first, so it would be about 5-6 hours for painting. I didn't track the time for the other 2 illustrations but it's about the same amount of time :) although It's doesn't feel real but it is so ahahah and I feel like the other 2 took me less time than this one. I have no idea if it's a long or short time to complete a painting. Usually each illustration I create takes me from 5 to 10 hours from sketch to last detail, depending on the complexity of the illustration!

It's all the beauty of using gouache, sometimes there are imperfections that just become a part of the artwork/ :)

This is amazing. Your art is beautiful!! Can this paint be used of fabric for clothing? And if so can you wash it or does it have to be dry cleaned?

Hello Man Sun! Thank you for your kind words! I really appreciate it! :) I used white gouache which it's much more covering compared to watercolor white! hope this answered your question!

How do you get the gouache to show up so well on the black/dark blue gouache? It seems every time I try to get mine to do that it either dries so translucent that you can’t see it or it’s all grainy

It might have something to do with the gouache quality! For this piece I painted with Royal Talens extra fine quality gouache. They're good quality paint and their covering power is really good! so if I paint them opaque they aren't translucent. Maybe you can try to add some white to the colours, that might help gouache to show up well on dark tones! What really helped as well is that I didn't paint the blues on top of black, although RT gouache is quite covering, I don't think they would show up so well and the light colors would have gotten dirty of black instead! For example if you're planning to paint with dark tone and then painting light colours on top, I would suggest you to leave the area where you want to paint light colors white, so that with the contrast of black alongside, they light colors will remain clean and will stand out more! I don't know if I explained well but I hope this helps! ^^

is gouache a kind of painting technique or a kind of painting color?

  • @sandraruberto8806

It's actually both! Maybe it's more accurate to say it's a kind of painting colour since it's a different type of paint in comparison to other art mediums , but it's also a painting technique like watercolour and acrylic for example!

ahahah but honestly I feel like I'm a slow painter! which as a Illustrator I have to improve that and be faster! so this is just me and I honestly don't know if 6 hours was a short or long time! I think it's too long and I'm sure other people could have done the same thing in a shorter time. Everyone works with a different speed so to reach the same quality, some people are faster and some are slower, it all depends on the person! You know, if you feel like what you're creating needs more attention and is worth the time to invest on it, then try and take your time! and see if you see some differences :)
