Bee | Gouache illustration

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Bee illustration // gouache speed painting.
The first painting of a series of illustrations I created, with a different animal, flower and metallic colour for each.
For this illustration I chose the bee, gerbera flower and gold metallic colour to combine all together. Enjoy !

This is beautiful. I love the mix of the triangle and the honeycombs in there with the softer lines of the flowers.

Thank you!! :) For this illustration I used Carré d'As -Imaginer- paper, 180gsm. Unfortunately I found out this brand doesn't exist anymore! However I found a good replacement which is Canson "C" à Grain paper, 224 gsm ! In general I use different kind of papers from different brands, depending on the illustration! Usually for gouache, I always work with paper over 200 gsm! :)

do you use black straight from the tube or do you mix it every time? Watercolor has taught me to mix blacks but if I'm going to use that much black esp on the bg, it's very tempting to use it straight..

Hi there! :) For this illustration I used the black straight from the tube because I just needed to fill the background with simple black, so it would have been a bit waste of paint to mix up other colours to create black! But I totally relate to you and I'm same. I've also been taught to never use black straight from the tube, especially for realistic painting, but rather create my own black! Simply because as you might know, black tend to dirty the colors you mix with. In my artworks I love to have bright colours as much as possible. By creating my own black I can have a bigger variety of dark colours and (if it makes sense) I find that my darkest colours are still bright. So I only use black straight from the tube when I paint the outline of characters and when I don't need to mix black with another color! :)

You're welcome! :D Exactly I also use blues and earth tones to create black! I totally agree they can run out quickly if not used with moderation, but I personally don't mind investing money buying more tubes if it benefits the colour's quality of my paintings! :) Oh yes I also have the bigger tubes of black and white! Omg my white runs out sooo fast because I use a lot to create light and pastel colours, but the black one ahaha I still have the same tube from 5 years ago since I mostly never use it XD Exactly black color helps bright colours to pop up!! especially it helps a lot with gouache that have a more opaque and matt finishing in comparison to watercolours! So definitely don't feel bad using black straight from the tube for filling a simple black background!! :D

I use gouache from the brand Royal Talens - extra fine quality-! one of the best, professional and high quality gouache in my opinion! I also use gouache form the brand Winsor & Newton Winsor, it's high quality as well :)

You did a wonderful job of painting this piece. If I may offer a tiny bit of constructive criticism for you to consider (or discard) as you wish: everything in the piece ‘pops’, so it’s difficult to distinguish the focal point. Is it the bee, or the flowers? I assume it’s the bee by the title ‘Gold Bee’, however it’s the vibrant yellow flowers that repeatedly draw my attention when I look at this piece. Just my impression, it may be different for other viewers. Nevertheless, all said with kindness in mind.

Hi! Don't worry constructive criticism are always welcomed ^^ When I was sketching, my idea was to make a series of illustrations with a different animal, flower and metallic colour for each. For this one I choose the bee accompanied by yellow gerbera flowers and gold, because I think they go well all together. So both the flower and the bee are the main focal point. I get that everything might pop out but I hope I was able to achieve a nice illustration overall, which was my main goal :) Regarding the title please don't mind it too much, I wasn't really sure about what title to give so I just choose golden bee ! Thank you for you comment anyway, I appreciate it :)

Wow...it never fails to amaze me what some people will say to others. Your art is phenomenal and you don’t need to explain yourself. There is no right or wrong in art but you can tell the difference in somebody who is really good/professional by their technique - and you have it!🙌🏻...constructive criticism 🤯👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
