Kohler K-series Carb Adjustment

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video is about how I adjust the carburetors on the Kohler engines I've been working with lately. The ones I show here are on K181 engines, but these same carburetors were used on K141 and K161 engines also.

I usually do this by sound and smell, my neighbors must think I'm insane when I'm getting off of my c120 with the blades on and the hydro engaged in a stopped position and adjusting the high-speed jet at full throttle waving the exhaust towards my nose.

I think my k181s might need a fuel pump and carburetor replacement one that's closest to the original carburetor I can use any gas pump but the tank is above the engine i still would try a pump on it though

I've never tried to fix one like that. Fuel has to be getting into the venturi (on the other side of the throttle plate) somehow. 1st I'd have to verify the throttle plate is closing properly, if you can turn the idle speed screw down far enough for the engine to die that's probably ok. If the throttle plate closes correctly fuel can only get in there 2 ways. If there's a bowl venting problem maybe fuel is trickling out of the main jet. That's probably not likely. That means fuel is probably coming out of the idle hole on the inside of the closed throttle plate. The most likely thing to cause that is the idle mixture screw needle not sealing off properly when it feels like it's closed. That could be the needle tip of the screw, or the seat. So that's my guess from here, maybe I'll have to do some test that one of these days.

I can turn idle screw out almost all the way before I notice it slowing down. Why is that? ( Carter model n on my 704)

  • @PackratsFabrications

    @PackratsFabrications

    3 жыл бұрын

When you turn the idle screw out, it should let more fuel out. The engine slows down when the mixture gets too rich (too much fuel in the air/fuel mixture). Here's a few reasons that might not be happening. 1. If the fuel passage from the bowl to the idle screw is partially clogged then fuel flow wouldn't increase as expected when you turn the screw out. 2. If the idle speed is too fast there's more air flow so it takes more fuel to make it rich enough to slow down. Just make sure the idle speed is low enough. 3. If the float level is off, both adjustment screws might not work right. If the engine runs good except you can't find that point where it slows down, I'd turn it in until it slows down, back it out a little bit and leave it. Sometimes if the idle adjustment is too lean the engine stalls during quick acceleration. If that happens back the idle screw out slowly until it doesn't stall during acceleration.

What would the adjustments on a 12 hp Koehler be ??

The Kohler engine service manual covers all the K series single cylinder engines from 4hp to 16hp, but the carburetor section does not say anything about size. All of the adjustments and procedures I show on these smaller Kohlers should work on the larger ones, but I don't normally work on them so I didn't mention them. That includes K91(4hp), K141(6hp), K161(7hp), K181(8hp), K241(10hp), K301(12hp), K321(14hp), and K341(16hp).

What’s your thoughts on authentic kholer carburetor vs a generic carburetor? Authentic carburetor costs $300 and the generic carburetor costs $20. Do you think it worth it to pay so much for the authentic carburetor?

  • @PackratsFabrications

Hi, the generic carburetors I tried work pretty well. I had one that didn't respond to the adjustment screw the way it should, but it ran good so I used it anyway. I haven't bought an authentic one lately so I don't know about them. I like to rebuild the old carburetors as long as the shaft holes aren't wallered out.

No sorry, I don't work with those much. The ones I've had seem to work good when they're new, but I don't have rebuild kits on hand. The 2 adjustment screws should work about the same. I just don't have experience with them.

Hello Army Veteran . I have a Kohler Magnum M8T 8HP engine on a Troy Bilt Tiller. There is no High speed needle on the carburetor. It has a low idle mixture and just an idle speed screw. It is a Walbro carb. It will not idle when I try to idle the carb . It is a 1991 Kohler engine. Thanks for your help.

Hi, that's a little newer than what I work on, but I might be able to help. If you have a strong spark and the timing is right, but the adjustment that they provide won't allow it to run properly, it's most likely dirt in a fuel passage in the carburetor. I'd try a thorough cleaning. If you know somebody with an ultrasonic cleaner they do a nice job on internal passages.

The Kohler engine service manual covers all the K series engines from K91 thru K341 and it only has one adjustment procedure. So I think it's the same for all, 2 turns out for the main screw, and 1-1/4 turns out for the idle screw.

Turn the main screw out to 3 turns and try again. If that don't work, hook up a timing light and have a friend hold the trigger and watch the light. If the light's still flashing as it's dying then it's a fuel problem.

I can't say I disagree, I was impressed with the first few that I bought, then bought a few more but they weren't as good. It appears there may be a few different import suppliers. Also some of the imported carburetor rebuild kits I had gotten recently had needle seats that wouldn't thread in right.
