KODIAK CANVAS 10x10 TENT Heavy Rainstorm Performance & ONE Design Flaw!

Спорт

Kodiak Canvas 10x10 Tent, reviewed after overnight, torrential rain downpour with duration of over 9 hours. Heavy rainstorm performance was great. However, I reveal ONE DESIGN FLAW!
/ @mavhntr
After 6 years of heavy use, this canvas tent seeing an average of 60+ days afield, keeps going strong for my use afield for all 4 seasons of the year.
Later that day, the heavy rainstorm continued for an additional 10 hours throughout that afternoon and evening.

ABOUT: Bothersome to spend this amount of money and have to fix a flaw in design afterthought.
The Kodiak Tent company knows that to use the vestibule on the 10x10 model, the front awning needs to have additional grommets installed. They let you, the consumer, know that it needs to be done and suggest how to do it.
THE MAIN POINT: Why doesn't the company just have the grommets already installed on the 10x10 main tent front awning to accommodate using the optional front vestibule in the first place?!?
UPDATE 02/01/2024:
The original factory awning, corner grommets are heavily reinforced with backing material. Adding 2 new grommets for using the optional front vestibule, the material is only double over in the area the company suggests installing the 2 grommets. After couple months of use, the awning material was tearing away from my installed grommets. I had to take the tent to a local sail shop. They removed my grommets, added 2 layers of reinforcing material and reinstalled new grommets. Even used the same grommet tool that I did. Great quality of workmanship by the sail shop....at an additional cost of $200 out of my pocket.

ABOUT: The Kodiak Canvas tent has been very good, even great, for my use in the great outdoors during this time. Easy, fast set up, the hardest & longest part of set up is putting all the stakes into the ground.

I have the same set up and have no issues after installing the extra grommets. Also, I bought a cheap extension paint pole at Lowes and put a tennis ball on the end of it. I extend it and put it under the middle of the awning. Rainwater runs right off. No pooling

Good for your results. I used comm'l grommet tool and my results far less than my expectations. A San Diego sail shop fixed my awning the right way. They shook the heads at the company suggested "fix" after viewing the awning material. The shop added canvas to reinforce area, sewed and then installed grommet. In the front edge center too! Only cost me an addit'l $200+ dollars.

Just move in that extra windscreen closer to the tent lay that flap over top

That’s why Kodiak Tents recommends adding the extra grommets, 4” in from the original factory corner grommets.

Angling the honing down so the rain can run off would have been better so that the water wouldn't gather in one spot....

Yes, I tilt one pole down slightly to let rain water run off. Did let rainwater pool to show on video.

do you stake down the ground tarp with the tent in each corner? thanks

That is an option. Usually, I do not stake down the ground tarp. Just don't want to take the chance a stake backs out of the ground tarp and goes up and damages the tent. Also, I often fold back the ground tarp edges under the tent's edges. As to not cache rainwater on the ground tarp.

1:24 having that tote against the fabric doesn't weep water through?

It is best to avoid having anything push against the canvas fabric, from inside or outside. Tote got pushed around, moved it later. But NO water seeped nor leaked through the canvas of this 6yo tent. A testament to the quality canvas type used by Kodiak Tent Co.

The instructions for the vestibule tell you to install new grommets 4" back from the edge to create the overlap that stops the leakage. It is not a design flaw.

yes, read those instructions. But to my point, why buy something that should fit, out of the box from the same tent manufacturer at their premium price, and then have to spend additional $ and more importantly, time to get it ready to use. Should be ready to use out of the box. Don't get me wrong, love my Kodiak tent, even though a China copy of the Springbar made in Utah-USA.

Looks like they fixed it on the newer ones where the grommets are in the correct place. Definitely a design flaw.

I believe the new tents were changed when the vestibule started being offered as an option there was no need for the extra grommet holes when your older tent was made. I had to retrofit my older tent too. Well worth the effort to do it. A good strong grommet kit was not cheap 😳.

It is a design flaw. You shouldn’t have to modify one product to work with another one of their products that are commonly sold together. It appears Kodiak addressed this issue

I have this same tent and that whole awning set up is flawed.

The awning set up does take some extra effort, modifications after purchase to set correctly. Vid coming soon showing my mods to get my expected performance with the awning...stay tuned.
