Kodiak Blacktail Hunt | Girls Trip 2022 | 7 of 9 Tags Filled

The saying is true, girls just wanna have fun, and that is exactly what the girls did in Kodiak! Not only did these three ladies have a blast hunting sitka blacktail on Kodiak Island, but they came out heavy, filling 7 of 9 tags!
Hunting deer during the rut in remote Alaska is an adventure many hunters dream of. But, with the rugged nature of wild Alaska, nothing is given freely. Watch as two strangers who first met online, and a childhood best friend meet up and find success on the hunt.
Courtney and Emily even had a triple day with so many on your seat stories you are going to love this video. Tune into this episode from @heroutdoorjourney and let this trip of a lifetime inspire you to plan your own bucket list adventure!
Do you want a full breakdown of the hunt from planning, to days in the field, gear talk, and so much more? Join Courtney and Emily on the Soul Summit Podcast as they finish telling the stories from this hunt on Kodiak Island.
In addition to the minute-by-minute replay in the field, they also cover some of your questions about the trip, and their biggest takeaways! Listen in as they also discuss what gear they say is a must, what didn’t work, and what changes they would make before another cold-weather hunt. They also speak candidly about gun issues and how they would better protect their weapons on future hunts. Find full episodes of the #SoulSummitPodcast on all major podcast apps.

The rifles not firing was probably due to factory oil or grease inside the bolt being frozen. Rifles sweat a lot when brought inside each day and that condensation can freeze up a firing pin spring. Its hard not to bring them inside to dry out. The newer rifle bolts are easier to take apart and wipe down . Light coat of Slick 2000, very light. Great hunt 🦦, congrats to you all.

Really enjoyed you video and the hunt. After guiding for 17 years i have seen very little people last more than five days. It was apparent how much fun was bringing had when you can’t remember what day your on. I love the fact that to if you have never shot a deer and went at it anyway. I will be playing this for my boys for that reason. Any idea what was going on with the slow bolt release?

Thank you! Yes, that is a GREAT question and something we are diving deeper into on the Soul Summit Podcast - you can also find the full recap episodes from the trip on the podcast too. We are both shooting different guns and ammo and believe the issues were two different things. On mine (Courtney) I believe it's a shallow strike. However, it is still unresolved why it was happening intermittently on my rifle. On Emily's, her gun was jammed up in the action and the firing pin wasn't even engaging. Brush, temps, and a dirty gun may be part of the blame on that. As soon as I know what exactly happened, I will be chatting about this on the pod and talking about gun care in rugged, frigid conditions.

No kidding! That was sort of my thought too. Hunting on Kodiak without a reliable weapon isn't a great feeling for so many obvious reasons. Thankfully I think I know why mine was having issues and how to fix it in the meantime. Thanks for watching!

I had a 17 that would not fire it was only if you chambered it twice. I lubed the bolt and now it fires every single time. Guns are picky when it comes to Greece or oil. If you can find triflow that is the best best there is. It's nice to see a three woman hunt team love your video I will subscribe

Thanks and great question! One of the guns had an issue with a recall on the firing pin spring, then other gun issue I believe was from a dirty gun. I learned a lot on this hunt and took time to dig into gun hygiene and do's and don'ts for being in single digit temps.

When your gun misfires like that again. Take your bolt apart and clean it . More than likely the oil that was on it gelled up due to the cold.

What's the story with rifles not firing ? Maybe did to clean your firing pin of grease or oil with a degreaser and re-lube with a dry lube. The cold can cause the firing pin to be sticky when it gets cold can lead to rifles not firing But Nice job on the hunt
