Kobe, especially from 05-07, outside of MJ, was the most RELENTLESSLY great scorer I've ever seen. Objectively speaking though, he took A LOT of tough if not bad shots. Even in this highlight reel, at least 90% of his makes were highly contested, low percentage shots. That's why his FG percentages were always in the 40's. He had so much belief in his ability to make difficult shots, that he would continue to take them (although with who he had around him after Shaq and before Pau, he almost had no other choice many times). Kobe was like the Brett Farve of the NBA. They both were great enough and able enough and did showcase the ability to beat you in a textbook right way, making the right decisions, not forcing the issue and playing within the offense, but at heart, they were "gunslingers" always more than willing to engage in a good ole fashion "shoot out". They were more Tony Montana than Jason Bourne. That was what made them so polarizing and frustrating, and yet so historically great and beloved.

Almost every perimeter scorers % is in the 40s ... unless you are a pf or center being in the mid to high 40s like he was is fantastic. Nobody on this team could score LIKE that. No floor spacing so of course he was taking contested shots

I just like how you got to make sure you put Jordan above Kobe, Kobe was more skilled than jordan, there's a lot of NBA players that say it too, it's a shame I always got to bring Jordan up

@@hashmoncrief6965 If you compare prime MJ to prime Kobe, yes Kobe was at least slightly more skilled, BUT MJ was quicker, more athletically gifted (though Kobe was supremely gifted athletically in his prime) better shot selection and was slightly more tenacious defensively. Plus, much of Kobe's game was undeniably influenced by Michael's.

I love last 2-3 years of number 8 Kobe. He was class scorer.

If Kobe had a championship caliber team that year, he might have six championships, three finals MVPs, and two regular season MVPs. but I wouldn't trade the reality of the 2005-2006 season that Kobe gave us. The 81 point game, the 62 in three quarters, the almost upset of the Suns in the Playoffs, the dunk on Nash in game 2 against the Suns, the game winner in game 4 against the Suns. The 9 game 40 point streak and the 40 point average in January (February too, I think. Correct me if i am wrong). A season for the history books that is more memorable than a second regular season MVP campaign can give.

I feel you man. Tough with that supporting cast building up from the 2004 demolition. The 9 straight 40+ was actually in February of 2002-03, the first of his 4 months averaging 40+. He did average 43.4 in January ‘06 tho which included a stretch of 4 straight 45+ pt games. The other 2 months averaging 40+ were in apr 06 and march 07. Theres only 4 players ever to log 40+ ppg in a month. Baylor, chamberlain, kobe, harden. When Kobe did it in ‘03 he became the first to do it since wilt in 1964. MVP’s can be extremely misleading. Theres no question the media had disdain for Kobe. The mere fact the Nash has 2 mvp’s, and Kobe and Shaq have only 1 a piece invalidates the award’s legitimacy right there. Its often a popularity contest. There are a handful of mvp’s theyve gotten wrong in my personal opinion. 2005-06 was one of them. Any other player besides Kobe does the 81, 62 in 3, 43.4 in a month, 40+ pts in 27 games, 4 straight 45+ and 35.4 overall on 45-35-85 while dragging a load of role playing underachievers to 45-37, they win MVP. And just because he didn’t win the award doesn’t mean he wasn’t the most valuable. Baseball has fixed this with WAR. Used to be “best player on best team” approach. Now with a statistic that represents a player’s true value, doesn’t matter if you finish last in your division or first. 2 of trout’s 3 mvp’s the Angels finished below .500 and missed the postseason. Baseball no longer holds the team’s lack of success against the individual.

@@dcshow Shaq and Kobe only having one MVP each is one of the greatest travesties in NBA History. The haters knock on Kobe for winning only one MVP but that is too simplistic and shallow of a way of looking at things. As you said, the regular-season MVP award has been reduced to a narrative-based popularity contest by the media. One thing is true is that Kobe's '05-'06 season masterpiece is greater than any generic MVP season.

Great upload and analysis as usual! On a separate note, do you think you can find any Kobe games where he wore the Blue throwbacks the Lakers are gonna bring back this season? I've seen several pictures of him in the unis (especially in a game at Golden State), but I've only seen one of the games on YT.

Believe your referring to the silk jerseys. Nuggets, heat, 76ers, warriors, few other teams in the 2000’s rocked them. When adidas implemented their “revolution 30” heading into 2010-11 every team officially wore the same fabric.

There are many reasons. think its important to show misses as they are part of the subject’s individual performance. They add context. There is value in misses this way, especially a year like Kobe ‘06 where his shot creating ability was on full display. I received great feedback when I first implemented on “Kobe 37 points vs clippers 2004-05” upload a few weeks back. I also explained it a bit more in the description of that video. I hope this clears things up a bit. Thank you for the support.

To add to the other comments, it also gives you an explanation of Kobe's "bad efficiency" as it is called by some since it shows that in most occasions Kobe's shots were under pressure or extreme marking especially in season like this where his 3rd best teammate was Mihm..And of course it was Kobe's decision to take such shots but the truth is most of the times those kind of shots were the better option. Plus,many of his missed "bad" shots would be called fouls immediately today.In this game f.e. he would have had at least 45 points due to free throws if he had the same treatment of scoring superstars today like Harden.He had many contested shots where the defender was in total contact with him.

Im not even sure how one could accurately gather that kind of data on a specific type of shot in a specific area of the floor. Bballreference has the general type and distance but nothing much beyond that.

From 2001-11 he shot 44.6% from 10-16 feet. 2006-11 he was at 47.3%. How he operated, the bulk of his looks from this distance were contested with a natural fade in his shot, scratch a few percentage points for difficulty of his typical baseline fades, whether pull up, stepback, post turn etc., and my guess would be somewhere from 40-43%. His numbers fluctuated greatly year to year tho. In 2004-05 for instance 12% of his fga’s were from 10-16 feet, shooting 36% on such looks. In 2009-10 however, it was up to 22% on 48%.
