Kobe Bryant -
Skill Set Series:
Featured is Kobe’s 2-step running jumper. This shot may appear simple, but not many others have applied it or seemingly even tried to consistently. Kobe didn’t limit his usage of it to one side of the floor. Driving right meant jumping off his left, and driving left required going off his right. He typically faded, as that 2nd step functions to create separation from the defender when elevating. Kobe used it a lot during the 2002-03 season, likely his athletic peak. In many of the ‘03 clips, specifically 2:21 in San Antonio, notice how his release is higher than it’d been previously. His chiseled-out frame allowed for no wasted movement, making an opposite legged running fadeaway with a high flick of the wrist look effortless.

To me, the one over Paul Pierce, when he palmed it, but lost it, but still converted. He didn’t have many hand injuries so he could palm the ball easier back then. Later in his career, broken and dislocated fingers, could only cup the ball or palm with his left hand.

My favorites are the ones where he comes straight down the middle and drifts off towards the baseline with the kiss off the glass. Such a cool looking shot and difficult to make.

Kobe's game OMG....very less players want to take these kind of shot in todays, they always want to create space....very less are going and hitting face to face shots inside the arc

It’s a beautiful shot. I just think nowadays there are other shot options that for the average person are more efficient. You have to have unusual athleticism to consistently make that shot. Even if you worked every day to develop the balance needed for that shot, it still requires a lot of elevation and coordination.
