Knysna, Western Cape South Africa
Knysna (/ˈnaɪznə/) is a town with 76,150 inhabitants (2019 mid-year estimates) in the Western Cape province of South Africa. and is one of the destinations on the loosely defined Garden Route tourist route.
A number of explanations exist for the origins of the name, 'Knysna' - including ‘xthys xna,’ purportedly from a Khoekhoe language term that night mean have meant ‘place of timber’, ‘place of ferns’, or even ‘straight down’(referring to the cliffs at The Heads).
The first Europeans arrived in the area in 1760, and the farm Melkhoutkraal (literally translating from Afrikaans as 'milk wood kraal’) was established on the eastern shore of the Knysna Lagoon. Stephanus Terblans, the first European farmer to settle in the area, was given a loan permit to farm here in 1770.

I now live in New Zealand but was born in "District 6" Cape Town, and visited Knysna two or three times but never thought of going through the forest let alone wet my feet in the lagoon. As a cabinetmaker/joiner the company I worked for we once had to make a Stinkwood display cabinet for the then Prime Minister P.W Botha,to hold a solid gold Tea/coffee set complete with tray(a gift to the South African Government from the Spanish Government) which was unknowingly found in the archive stores, so we sourced the Yellow wood from suppliers in Knysna.If only I had taken the time and will to enjoy this beautiful place on the South East coast of The Republic of South Africa, my birth place. Hallo, I must disagree that Barrington invited the silk spinners here, that is the version from a novel. Its not the truth. He was already very old, and had inspired the govt of the day to invite european settlers with skills- to make silk. He had success with real mulberries he imported. I wish people would stop thinking Dalene Matthee wrote history books. No, they are loosely based on facts darlings. She needed a baddie- and the local engelsman was a good choice. Its not true though. Barrington wrote diaries of that time, and he was just as horrified by their plight and even tried to help them. He died shortly after their arrival in Knysna.
