KZN will determine the national election this time round, it’s the most populous province, so has a bigger sway on the national ballot. It appears Zuma will take a 23% chunk of the KZN ballot, hopefully the MPC will win by a ball hair, putting IFP in charge of KZN, DA in the WC, and we’ll see for the rest of the country. Although I don’t expect the ANC to fight fair, they never have. And I have a lack of confidence in the IEC.

Doesn't matter same issues under DA leadership previously, just look at what the resident living there says about it watch to the end. I thought municpalities aren't run by politics. The DA doesn't have to be in control to make proposals the coalition can't refuse. But the DA's message is clear. Rebuild. They want to rebuild from the ashes even at the expense of residents. The DA has the same issues in your own metro in Cape Town. It's too easy to blame it on politics but even if the DA takes over right now doesn't mean it will solve societal issues. Just look at Dunoon people still living with communal toilets. So how is that different from long drops? The DA has convinced me that we will not solve our problems with politics. Time for change something new maybe only scientist and engineers should be eligible or something I don't know but politics doesn't seem to be the answer. Because it shouldn't be bleeding into the running of the municipality. @@beryllaing6992

I just checked the results on the IEC website from the previous municipal elections and it appears that the ANC won a majority in ward 11 (Hornlee, Knysna). Honestly, these people cannot complain about poor service delivery when they vote ANC.

Wow. I have no words. The once beautiful town of Knysna is now like this? The ANC is completely incapable of governing. What a shame. Hope the voters will vote wisely next time.

Get an Attorney to represent the town's residents and get them to pay their rates into an account in the best interest of the town. Boycott the municipality and it goes to court, the residents can fight for the right to appoint the private sector to step in and fix the town.

Wow just wow I have no words. I was there 20 years ago and it was pure heaven. This is beyond devastating and needs immediate change. Eco systems and people will die from this.

Shocking. The first time I visited Knysna was for a hockey tour in 2008. The place was breathtaking and our school team even bumped into Amazulu FC football players on the ferry. Not everyone likes Helen Zille but she is correct in saying that people need to be clear about their mandate at the ballot box. @yourfriendlyneighbourhoods8202 Keep an eye, improvements happening in baby steps , and once we rid of the bad governance, it will grow again. Empathy and Ubuntu is growinh in town and the community is uniting slowly to eradicate the rot. But a slow process. Sadly 2 businesses closed recently. But excitingly, a lot of young folk settling here too, so am hopeful for the future.

Unfortunately, certain people, couldn't care less about nature or the environment. They only expand, multiply and take take take.

This makes me so incredibly sad! Thanks for your excellent reporting.

What a shocking state of affairs for such a lovely place. It was so beautiful when we were there honeymooning in Eastern Cape. We were married in the Bathurst Settler Church. We stayed in South Africa several times a year for about 10 years and love the country and the people and have many friends there. I find it hard to believe what has happened to this beloved country and its peoples in the last 14 years and it breaks my heart. Corruption and mismanagement in both national and local government and a breakdown in law and order seems to have played a large part in the problems the country now faces. Unfortunately, it's her people and the environment that is now suffering, not the bureaucrats! I pray that common sense will prevail before things get even worse.

I have now left @Knysna and this is the reason! I used to own a business there very close to John"s business - we reported a number of these issues to Alan Windy years ago (not just me but a number of other people and business) but it all fell on deaf ears! Now look where it is - Thanks Alan. Yes the @ANC is doing this to Knysna but @DA are just as much to blame!

Alan is premier for the whole province. It’s up to the municipal governments to look after their towns while the provincial government provides funding. If the municipalities are stealing all the funds the towns destruction is on that municipality.

Nothing has been done but the towns on the edge of financial collapse. That has to be the most creative way to explain corruption.

I'm an Engineer Immigrating to Canada and will be going skiing with another two SA Engineers (Whi no longer live in SA). One of them is a Water Engineer and specialist. They will NEVER fix this, those pipes are empty and floating up in flooding then cracking. The maintenance needs to start at the drainage level (The round concrete lids, tell me have you EVER seen a Stormwater drain being cleaned?)

Knysna residents should withhold their rates and taxes and pay it into a trust fund administered by competent people.

If an international tourist destination looks like this, there's no chance for smaller municipalities.... In Randfontein, all the potholes are being fixed by oom Piet, who spray paints his name next to it, it's pathetic that we have to pay rates and taxes and the money isn't used for upkeep like it should be

Cadre deployment at its best on display

Was born in Knysna, left in 2007, but still going there for holidays. It's my home, even if it is 4 - 5 hours away. It's heartbreaking to see what the ANC has done to my home. Something needs to be done to get rid of the ANC, we can't let them keep doing what they have been doing since day 1.

Lets work together as a community to save Knysna. Is any knowledgeable person able to create a plan? Can we save the estuary? Business and Tourism need to please work together without politics... the political clowns won't understand the serious threat to residents and nature!! We need leaders in the community to make a plan....I pray that SA can stand together to save Knysna! Thank you Carter Blanche ❤❤

That's just it. We don't get to choose. Who in their right mind would take a fired policeman and make him executive mayor? I mean whould we get on an aeroplane flight where the pilot was recently the baggage handler? It's a gang related appointment, and the gang is the ANC.

The Technical Director of the municipality has advised me in writing that they do not have resources to sort out the sewerage that runs from Hornlee through Hunters Home into the estuary on a daily basis for over a YEAR now.

Exactly. The PA were previously governing the municipality with the DA, then they changed teams to ANC as they must’ve received a better “offer” for money

Spare a thought too for SANParks, who's mandate it is to environmentally protect this Estuary. They, other conservationists and ordinary concerned citizens of all races, are fighting a battle against unfair odds!!

If the ANC wins this election, people must start investigating the "free and fairness" of elections. How is it possible for such iniquity to still have support amongst voters????

Every single election there are reports of boxes of excess ballots dumped outside a town next to the road. Why? because it was rigged and they had too many fake votes, so to balance the numbers they need to get rid of the excess.

I am flying to South Africa headed to Knysna (lived in Fisherhaven) and shocked by what you are saying. Was missing it so much

much as I agree that the ANC is to blame, they werent always in power here. The previous DA administrations allowed rampant development without upgrading infrastructure. They are just as much to blame, I believe.

True! Even the journalist says that the decline of the infrastructure started years ago, while the ANC mayor has only been in office since 2022. So some of the failure falls under the DA led coalition. Still, it seems obvious to me, that the current mayor lacks the capacity to perform his duties. His answer alone when asked about the water reservoir indicates shocking lack of oversight and action!

Unfortunately, I have lived in Gauteng, KZN, and the Western Cape. There is no comparison between ANC- and DA run regions. When you drive through the different regions, you can see the difference. Go look at the stats. Most ANC lead towns and cities are falling apart just like Eskom, SAA, and the Railways. Everything they manage is a disaster. This while we are one of the most taxed societies in the world. We should stop making excuses for these evil, corrupt, incompetent people. How do you expect them to take responsibility for anything if you keep making excuses for them? Wake up and stop kidding yourself. These people must be held accountable. If they have evidence that the DA caused the situation in Kynsna, then provide the evidence. If you can't, then accept responsibility. It is that simple. Somebody has to be held accountable and made to pay. Otherwise, nothing will change.

So sad. Praying things will change for the better 🙏

As John Meterlekamp said , "doesn't matter who rules the Council, their focus has not been on keeping up with the growing demand of the population and the strain it has put on the old limited infrastructure". Sadly, the ANC doesn't carry the responsibility alone for this mess this time around.

I used to think I would retire in Knysna but not anymore. Regarding sewage processing.... we need to stop using flushing toilets and sending our waste to central sewage processing plants. When you mix faeces with liquid you end up with a massive problem. We can process our waste at our own homes with little to no fuss. Every house needs to start using dry composting systems.

@@susanlarhubarbe9475 not a problem. Each site will have its unique features and will need careful consideration and retrofitting but it can be done. All it takes is a conscious decision to make the shift and then a collective effort to make the adjustments. It also requires a mindset shift because most people believe we have to flush our waste away but when you start to research it you will discover that it is easy to process on site and is also a massive waste of energy and water to be flushing. We have the sanitation and microbial technology and knowledge now to be able to do the processing at source
