    Hi Alan, I think your guitar string videos are quite useful because there are many things people wonder about guitar strings but there are very few channels on KZread giving information about guitar strings. That's why your guitar strings videos are very succesfull and I think In the long run, it will greatly contribute to the development of the channel p.s. I saw this channel firstly while researching a guitar string for my father's guitar.

    Hi Okan Thanks for your feedback and hope you're both well. I've noticed that my string reviews get the most views so I'm going to continue doing them but I obviously don't want to keep changing the strings on my Taylor Academy 12e-N each month so I'm thinking of buying a cheap guitar just for doing string reviews on 😊

    Great review(s) 👍I strung the Taylor up with a set of the Martin Magnifico Aquila strings, which I think is a great match. Warm and rich sounding. Keep in mind though, when trying these, to give these a long while to settle in. They tend to sound a bit brittle at first, but afer a week or 4, they change sound... strange, but true. I also like the looks.

    Hi Alan, I tried the D'Addario carbons after your review and really like them. Just wondering, I notice the D'Addarios have a slight texture to them that nylon strings don't - to me, the carbons don't seem as smooth. Have you noticed this? Are the Knobloch any better or do all carbons just have a texture to them? Cheers!

  • @AlanRoyHocking

    @AlanRoyHocking

    I hadn't noticed the texture to be honest but I've been playing for 47 years so the callouses on my finger tips are very hard. I personally prefer the dimensions, feel and sound of the Knobloch Actives Double Silver CX Carbon strings over the D'addario Carbon strings. 😊

    Great video Alan. Is the Knobloch Double Silver Carbon CX 300ADC better or the D'Addario EJ45FF? I was looking at these two as peers for purchase and testing. Appreciate ur reply :-)

    High Ronald, I personally prefer the Knobloch Actives Double Silver CX Carbon 300 ADC because they seem to last longer and have a brighter tone but that's just my personal opinion. The D'Addario EJ45FF are also excellent strings I've done a review of the D'Addario EJ45FF Carbon Strings here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qJx8ls2Be87dkZs.html

    @@AlanRoyHocking Yes, I saw the other review and hence the question. I believe there is an updated version of it now D'Addario EJ47 Pro-Arte Normal. I am not sure how this numbering EJ45, EJ46, EJ47 goes. Any idea? Also, what recording equipment are u using? The guitar sounds are crystal clear. Can u tell me or do a video on it? Many thanks for all ur good work and wish u a blessed New Year :-)

    The numbers are normally related to the overall set tension so EJ45 would be normal tension, EJ46 would be hard tension. The EJ47 are normal tension but with 80/20 Bronze wound basses. D'Addario normally put the overall set tension on the back of the packets. You'll find details of the camara and microphone I used for recording in the description of each video. And a blessed 2012 for to! 😊

    Yes you're right Ronald, I've just checked. The EJ45 are normal tension with silver plated copper wound basses. Dear Mr. Hocking: How do you feel the sound is in these strings for example in relation to the D'Addario carbon in normal tension? I want to try them out and i'm using D'Addario carbon in normal tension and really like them. Are these Knoblochs warmer than D'Addario? brighter? Louder? More organic and natural sounding? Greetings from Mexico, excellent Saturday.

    Hola Javier, the Knobloch Actives Double Silver CX Carbon strings are much brighter, project further and are softer to play than the D'Addario carbon strings. I have used the D'addario EJ46FF High Tension and the D'Addario EJ45FF Normal Tension Carbon Strings on my Taylor and I really like them but they are no where near the sound and play-ability that I get from the Knobloch Actives Double Silver CX Carbon strings. Hope that answers your question 😊

    Hi Alan, just aquired the same guitar (second hand) and really like it, though not used to playing a nylon string am finding the action a bit higher than expected. Could you tell me what the action is on yours at the 12th fret on the high and low E string please? Just discovered your chanel and have subscribed and will be following with great interst, I am 80 years old this year so have have similar trouble with the fingers as you. Thank you for all the information on strings etc.

    Hi John, beautiful guitar. The action on all Taylor nylon strings should be 3mm at the 12th fret on the low E and 2.8mm at the 12th fret on the high E Action on nylon string guitars are always set higher than acoustic guitars because the nylon strings are much lower tension than acoustic steel strings and therefore vibrate more. The Taylor Academy 12e-N Nylon String Guitar has a bolt on neck and the action is set up very precisely with shims so if you're finding it too high I would take it to a qualified Taylor technician who can re-shim the neck and set it up properly for you Alan 😊

    Alan, I bought my 12 e n about 4 months ago and just found your reviews. Really enjoying them. I recently switched out the dad high tension carbon strings for daddario normal tension Ej45 nylons, but noticed the dreaded d string second and third fret sound issues that so many classical guitars seem to have. So I have been experimenting with other daddario and savarez nylon strings that are high tension, since the high tension carbons that came with the guitar did not produce that problem. No luck yet. Maybe this guitar does better with carbon? I did not love the dadarrio carbons because they sounded metallic and shrill, and i prefer a softer more traditional classical sound, that is mellow, richer and full. So I really like my dad nylon treble strings, but need a bass set that sound soft and rich without the d string problems. I will look for the knoblch normal tension carbon strings you used here. How does the d string on fret 2 and 3 sound with them when playing isolated sustained notes?

    Hi Mark. Thanks for your comment and feedback I appreciate it. I haven't had that problem when I drop to lower tension carbon strings but the guitar is obviously set up for high tension strings. I really like the Knobloch Strings and I've just bought a set of the the High Tension Knobloch CX Carbon Double Silver Actives for the next string change and will be doing a review of them soon. (the strings in this review are low tension) I also like the mellower sound of nylon strings and I've been looking at Savarez and Hannabach as well so I'll be trying them both out in the near future and obviously reviewing them along with a few other brands next year. Let me know how you get on with the Savarez 😊

    @@AlanRoyHocking I will do that. I put a savarez corum high tension d string on a few hours ago. It will need to settle in. So I will let you know in a few days how it is behaving. Some noise on the d so far, but maybe less than the ej45 normal d string? Ej 46 high tension are being shipped now. So they are my next experiment. I did not notice any issues with the d string on the original high tension carbons. So if I eventually have to back to those for bass strings I will. I am keeping the ej 45 trebles normal tension on the guitar because they sound much nicer to me than the original high tension carbon trebles did. I am focused on getting the bass strings right, whether high or normal, without the d string noise. Can’t figure out how to buy knobloch in the states, but if I do and need one more shot that will probably be the last test experiment for me.

    Alan, I think I sorted out what meets my needs (of course everyone’s taste, style and requirements are different). The Corum basses were not good for my 12 en and did not solve the d string issue. Fortunately, i then tried using dadarrio ej 46 HT nylon core silverplated basses and that did the trick. I now have ej 45 NT nylon trebles and ej 46 HT nylon core basses on the guitar and am very happy with the overall sound and feel. Very rich and excellent sustain, but probably not as lengthy as you are getting with the carbons. The ej 46 basses are already holding their tuning much better than the Corum basses did. Next experiment for me are the daddario black nylon NT strings for trebles. I hear they produce an even mellower sound, which I find appealing. I’ll probably wait a few months before I give that a go. Time to save up some $ again! Keep up the experiments. Very interesting for us string geeks with 12 E N guitars.
