KNITTING TUTORIAL | 'mohair' boat neck top/off the shoulder top | FREE PATTERN | nelsknits
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Here is the long awaited knitting tutorial with the free pattern for the ‘mohair’ boat neck top/ 'mohair' off the shoulder top ♡
Please tag me/credit me if you share your process of making this top or the finished result on Instagram ( @nelsknits )! You can also use the hashtag #mohairboatnecktop
I can’t wait to see your versions of this top! ♡
If you have any questions or trouble with the pattern, don't hesitate to message me on ig and I'll try my best to help you out.
As you can see in the video I knit left handed. Everything is the mirror image of what a right handed knitter would do. This doesn't cause any problems for the pattern or anything. 'Working needle' refers to the needle that you actively knit the stitches with (for me it's the left needle, for right handed knitters it would be the right needle).
Since it's maybe tricky for a right handed knitter to learn the skills needed just from watching my left-handed version, feel free to look up any skills you need on YT to find a right-handed tutorial.
Skills you need:
- elastic cast on
-working in the round
-knit front back increase (kfb)
-picking up stitches
-casting on stitches in the middle of a row
-knit 2 together decrease (k2tog)
-elastic bind off
-magic loop or double pointed needles
chapters:

0:14 materials
0:37 the yoke
11:07 splitting off the arms
16:26 the body
18:42 binding off
19:56 the arms

I'm really happy and overwhelmed by so many nice words and suport for this design. It's really exciting for me too to have released my first pattern! So thank you for that 💗💕 I noticed a little mistake in my pattern though that I wanted to point out and correct here! At 18:30 when talking about the waist decreasing, I forgot two rows and the stitch count is off. The correct pattern for this part is as follows: R1:k2tog in 7th st R3: k2tog in 51st st R5:ck2tog in 29nd st R7: k2tog in 65th st R9: k2tog in 14th st R11: k2tog in 56th st R13: k2tog in 35th st R15: k2tog in 76th st R17: k2tog in 20th st R19: k2tog in 60th st R21: k2tog in 40th st R23: k2tog in 79th st --> 78st (if you already knit this part, it's not that big of a deal it won't change the look of the top. You're just 'missing' two stitches then. I just wanted to cear it up so nobody is confused by the wrong stitch count, sorry guyss) Also I just put some info about the size adjustments for bigger or smaller sizes on my Instagram in a highlight! I'd suggest you check that out if you wanna make this top in a different size. If anything is still unclear, please just reach out to me on Instagram and I'll try my best to help 💗

You have no idea how happy I am to see this video!! I've been looking for tutorials and inspirations for these kinds of long sleeve mohair knit tops and I couldn't find anything until I saw this. When I saw it on Instagram I was seriously jumping for joy. So unbelievably cute!!!❤
I absolutely fell in love with this top when I came across it on instagram. You're so kind for making this a free pattern, thank you so so much ♥♥♥
been obsessing over this top for days on Instagram... can't believe it's a free pattern🙏🙏💗💗 thank you so much can't wait to start mine
Just a tip for someone who wants to adjust it to their size better, i added 6 stitches to the bust shaping and made less decreases in waist shaping and it worked out just fine, don't be afraid to experiment, as long as you try it on in the process and it looks fine you're good!

@@catboycharlesim not an advanced knitter, but as long as the increases are evenly distributed it should turn out fine. Im 40DD and i added 8 increases (1 row of two inc on opposite sides and a normal row, 4 times). For example, if there's 90 sts, in the first row, you can do inc in the 1st st and the 45th st. Then the second row knit all across. 3rd row, inc in the 23rd st and 67th st... What i did there is i divided 90/2, then 90/4 for 3rd row.
Your an angel for this!! thank you for really getting all the little details filmed with clear instructions. Its a beautiful pattern
knitting this as I'm writing!! really impressed by how easy the pattern is to follow, I rarely use patterns because I quickly find them boring or hard to understand but this looks super promising! thank you so much for sharing, it's such a pretty top!

Thank you so much for this tutorial, the sweater is amazing!! I was wondering, if I wanted to adapt it for smaller shoulders and bust, what should I do?
@nelsknits
Жыл бұрын
The easiest way to change up the shoulders without having to recalculate it all is working with a different gauge. If you work with a gauge of 13st=10cm for example, the end of yoke/shoulder measurement would come out to 101cm and a bust measurement of 83cm. Keep in mind that you need some room for movement at the shoulders as well though! And by working the whole top in that different gauge, all measurements come out smaller, not just bust and shoulders. If you need a more differentiated approach to the size changes, write me on Instagram if you want and I'll try my best to help further! 💗
I love you so much. Will update when sweater is done

How did it turn out?
OMG I AM SO FUCKING HAPPY THANK YOU SO MUCH I’VE BEEN SEARCHING THESE FOR A WHILE NOW
This is a beautiful top. I’d really love to make it. Although i am afraid i might be missing something. I can’t work out how to meet gauge. The pattern says they are using 4,5 mm Needles working with what appears to be a thin yarn and getting a 12x40 gauge. This doesn’t make sense in my mind. In the bit of experimenting I’ve done I can’t get anywhere close to 12 stitches for every 10cm even using much larger needles and yarn. 12x40 doesn’t really make sense to begin with because of the basic anatomy of a stockinette stitch is not more then 3 times as wide as it is long. I looked up the yarn used in the video online and found the gauge listed to be 34x25 = 10x10 using 3.5mm needles which doesn’t add up to the 12x40 using 4.5 as listed in this video. I understand adjusting the pattern a little if you’re gauge is a bit off ie. a sizing up or down your needle size but i’m afraid any gauge i have is so off the pattern would not be helpful and i might as well freehand. I really hope I explained this all well. If anyone has the answer please lmk. like i said i would really love to use this pattern especially since the rest of the pattern seems so clear. i wondered if the gauge was just a typo but didn’t see anyone else confused or commenting about it so i think i might just be missing something.

hi, first time knitter here. I'm having trouble understanding the pattern for the second row. do i k9 twice then continue with the rest and kfb twice then repeat everything?
i think the row gauge is maybe wrong in this pattern, the finished yoke was 42 rows measuring at 14cm - shouldn't the 10x10cm gauge measure less then 40 rows then?
knitting it right now. very exited!

@nelsknits
Жыл бұрын
I thought about maybe making a crochet version of this sometime!!
If I use another yarn type will it come out the same or will it be stiff?
I noticed that you knit one extra stitch after the second row and beyond in the increase section so, would it be 91 stitches after the first increasing row?
Hey, so from row 5-13 do i just have to keep the same pattern to increase by 8 in every row ?
does anyone have any suggestions where to find yarn that would be good for this top? I usually go to michaels but i haven’t seen anything like it there so far
How many balls of drops yarn 25g did you use to make the heather colour top with long sleeves. Completely new knitter as in first time picking up needles was with this pattern. You are amazing your pattern and explanations are so easy to follow! Thank you !

if i wanted to use 8mm needles would i cast on half of 82
tysm for the tutorial!!! if i wanted to make it smaller around the chest, would i switch up the increases on the yoke?
@nelsknits
Жыл бұрын
yes that would be an option! You could work the increase part A as described in the pattern and knit less of the increase rows of increase section B. I'd make sure that it comes out to around the same lenght of the yoke though (14cm for me), to ensure it still fits nicely over your shoulders and isn't too short or pinch under the armpits when wearing it. If you need more help with it, just message me I'll try my best to help you out
Would it be possible for me to use 10ply yarn? thank you for the tutorial!
I love this soooo much, thank you , thank youuuu 😭😭 I‘m gonna knit this for christmas eve ✨ is there a possibility that you might explain someday how you designed it, like how you did the maths 🤣 for example how do I know that I‘m gonna increase in the 42th stitch and then in the 84th why not always in the same, maths is such a mystery to me 🤣 I can figure out the maths when I‘m knitting a top from bottom to top but top to bottom is just???? what??? anyways such a great tutorial

You can definitely experiment with different fibres! Though I can't say for sure how it'll turn out as I've only knit it with this fine fuzzy yarn. Make sure you knit a gauge swatch with whatever yarn you're intending to use though. It ensures that the size comes out right
Hiii love the tutorial but where are your needles from?

Did you make any adjustments when you used the drops yarn? I’m using drops as well, but mine keeps turning out smaller around the shoulders… Ty 💕

I did not make any adjustments for the Drops yarn. If you're having difficulties with the size it might be that your gauge is different than the one in the pattern. I would make a gauge swatch to double check and size up to bigger needles if your gauge has more st per 10 cm than in the pattern. Hope it helps! 💓

hiii, first of all thank you sooo much for the pattern, you are very generous for making it free too. İ have a small question, apparently our bodies are very similar in measurements but when i knit according to your pattern, around 3 row i see that it wouldn't stretch on my body. İ use 3.5 mm circular needles and i think it might be because of that. Should i just try knitting it all the way to try it on or redo with higher amount of stitches? pc.sorry for my English, its not my first language 💗
