I was taught in the 50s to knit in South Africa. I think we followed the English style. And a rule was always to knit ribs on smaller needles. You are the first person who has mentioned this and I think it is important. Thank you

I used to use sharp tip metal needles for everything except bead knitting (which I used the grabiest plastic for). Now my aging vision requires extra light on my work. I've found the light reflects off the metal needles into my eyes giving me a headache. I've switched to wooden and bamboo needles. Current favorite is Knitpicks sunstruck. The solid pale color is easy to see against all the dark and bright colors I prefer, and they don't reflect the light back at me. I prefer interchangeables because I have cats that sit next to me when I knit. When I use a cable longer than the knitting the cats attack and bite the exposed cable. I just start with short cables and swap as the stitch count increases.

Very interesting! I’m an Addi and ChiaoGoo metal lover as well. But I prefer bamboo for really slippery yarns. I like ChiaoGoo’s bamboo Spin tips then. They work with the red cords for a perfect blend of the right cord and the right needle. They’re fine on the Spin cords too, but the red cords are the holy grail, in my opinion.

Like Stephen, I use Addi's and ChiaGoo's! Of all sizes. I just think they're the best all around! And I love both cords, but the ChiaGoo joins are the best, while Addi's are more convenient for quick changes (no key's required).

Storage for circulars is what I need 🧶🧶

I like metal needles too. The way the yarn slips over the needles is so satisfying. I’ve tried wood many times but it’s just not the same. I use 3,5 mm or 4 mm the most. I recently had to knit sleeves with magic loop which was my first time with that technique. I usually have dpns for that but somehow they got lost. So I tried magic loop and the sleeves are so beautiful! It’s like, where have I been? 😂 I’m definitely using that technique for my next sweater project. Happy Easter.

I love fixed circular Knitter's Pride cubics. I really like the way they feel in my hand, and I find my stitches are so much more consistent with those than with other needles I've tried.

Thanks for your tips & tricks. I just made my 1st pair of socks, Bubbles & Brioche, on size 1 dpns. I lost 3 of them 😆. One fell between my pavers, but I'm hoping to find the other 2. My suggestion is to have multiple dpns of the size you need.

I like interchangeable needles, because you can put a safety pin in the hole and you never lose your stiches. I have safety pins everywhere! 😁 And for socks I love Addi CraSy Trio. The metal ones have two different tips, one thicker and one for lace and you can get them in short and long, just like you prefer.

I've not seen a lot about the Addi CraSy trio - and I've been reluctant to buy a set, given that they are quite expensive. (I'm comfortable on sets of DPNs but willing to consider other things if they work well.) So thank you for giving your thoughts on them.

I started knitting 2 years ago, aged 70. Thanks to your advice I bought Addi Turbo needles. I hated straight needles, hated them poking into things or sliding out of my work. I avoided knitting in favour of crochet up until I discovered I could use circular needles to work flat knitting. I found purling difficult and tried all styles but have settled on continental style. I also like Knit Pro Symphonie needles, still slippy but giving a little more control on cotton yarn.

I use Size 4 and Size 7 needles a lot. Size 4 for fingering weight yarns, and Size 7 for some worsted weight yarns that normally call for Size 8 needles. The Size 7 gives my knitting a crisper look than a Size 8 does.

I am a chiaogoo and hiya hiya sharps girl here! Love the metal and the cables are awesome! Thanks for a great video!

My favorite needles are also those made of steel. I like Chiagoo very much, but I will also recommend steel needles from Hiya Hiya. They are even more pointed than Chiagoo, and therefore the perfect choice if you like that. For example when you knit lace patterns. And thank you so much for sharing your favorites. ☺️🙏🏻

Love the metal needles. My favorite signature stilettos, chai goo…love the sharp points. The sharper the points besides lace, I love them for all projects. I tried the square needles once…not a fan because it changed the size of the stitch, a little bigger and change’s gauge. I have a similar needle storage as yours. They prevent kinks in the cords. I have something similar for double points. Thank you always for sharing.❤

I used to have issues with my interchangeable needles becoming unscrewed from the cord, but switched to the stainless steel and nylon knitters pride mindful swivel cords on my knit picks needles and problem solved. They are awesome. I focused so much on which needle but the correct cord is just as important to me.

I try them all. 🤣. I used to use Wood all the time but I switch up and down depending on my fiber I am using that is pretty much me. I love my Karbonz. I have nearly every one made. I use the shorty tips as well. Metal needles hurt my hands, wooden ones end up banana shaped or break. I have a Lykke set but only like the smaller ones

I agree never too many needles. I have 4 sets on interchangeable. My favorite are my signatures. I also love my knitters pride zings

My Addi Interchangeable Rocket Squared Short set is my go-to! I've even been considering a second set (I already got extra cords). And for smaller stuff like socks I usually go for my Lykke DPNs. I also have various tiny sizes of metal and bamboo DPNs for doll projects. When I travel I only bring the Clover bamboo DPN sets with me because they're easy enough to replace if TSA gets overzealous.

I love the Addi. Interchangeable and the ChiaoGoo metal interchangeable with the ChiaoGoo Twist Swiv360 Swivel Cable. I do have some of the Chiagoo metal with the red cables. I tried the ChiaoGoo 4 inch metal needle, and those are now my favorite.

Thank you, Stephen, for your videos! I just happened on them one day and hadn't known you were on KZread before that, or I would have been on them from the start!! Two of your shawl patterns, Bones and Dustland, have been go-to's for myself and for my son as well. I agree completely with all of your suggestions in this video--I like slippery for most things, although as I age I find I no longer have as much dexterity to manage them as well. Our lady of the LYS turned me on to Karbonz (which you may have "sideways" mentioned) and I find I use them a lot, especially for DPN socks. I spin a lot of my own yarn, so I really don't worry much about needle size--I find that hand spun is its own character and I have to depend a lot more on what I want the finished project to feel like, so I swatch a lot. Sometimes the grist is much heavier, and sometimes I manage to get it quite light, which I love but which isn't very sturdy, so I adapt what I'm doing via needle size. I also agree with your thoughts about longer circs, though I have to be careful if I'm knitting a stranded sweater in the round or something. I've never done that on two needles or on a Magic Loop, so there is much left to experiment with, even after close to six decades of knitting. So thank you again for your good advice, your beautiful and carefully written patterns, and may you always and ever enjoy your past, present and next projects!

Thanks for the helpful tips. I only use circular needles and DPN's and have a variety of interchangeable sets. Lykke, chiao goo, Hiya Hiya, knit picks and a few Addi Turbo fixed needles. I love the chiao goo needles mainly for the flexible cords and I use both metal and bamboo needles depending on the fiber I am using. Due to hand pain I have also tried some square needles from knitter pride and prym they do help when I an knitting a big project. The plastic prym needles were a little hard to get used to. I am still trying to find that perfect fit so I have not settles on one brand as my go to needle.

ChiaGoo’s are my favs. I started with Bamboo Clovers that I’d get on super cheap sale at Michael’s and JoAnns using coupons etc (I have tons of them) bc I liked the grip as a new knitter. As my confidence built along with speed I had to go metal. ChiaGoo has great slip and love pointy tips for picking up stitches/yarn. I still use the bamboo when I knit with silk and bamboo blend type yarns anything super slick, and if I use DPN’s it’s bamboo as well.

Hello! I use Addi fixed rockets and on rare occasion Brittany Birch Double Point needles for closing hats. What is the green shawl pattern and Grey shawl pattern? Is it Pierre? In August when school supplies are out, I pick up clear plastic pencil boxes, store the needles in them. The boxes.are small, stack well and inexpensive. 😃

I love my chiaogoo interchangeables... I start out with a shorter cord & change cords as my project grows... I've learned not to actually change needles.. sometimes there's an ever so slight size difference from one to another, even in the same brand... Your hands might not notice, but you can see it in the work.

I find bamboo helpful with cobweb and silky (slippy) lace weight yarn. I find the Chiaogoo cords are stiff for magic loop. The one time I knitted socks (Contrast Blast socks.😁). So I went back to dpns to finish them. I love Chiaogoos for shawls.

I love to work with metal needles, too. I knit more on the tight side, so yes to slippery needles. Also I’ll break everything wood eventually. Recently I discovered Lantern Moon, though, ebony needles which work almost like metal but feel warmer to the touch. Very lovely, but pricy.

I prefer ChiaoGoo Red Lace metal IC and fixed circular needles for most of my knitting. Next best choice is Knitters Pride IC sets in the "Ginger" color, with birchwood tips in either 4" or 5" lengths. For straight needles I like Knitters Pride Dreamz and Brittany. By the way, I heard recently that all Knitters Pride needles are going under the Knit Pro label moving forward. The name Knit Pro has been mostly used outside the USA up until now, although I have seen that label in some USA big box stores.

I love metal needles too but like bamboo as well. I have some Clover bamboo but the tips tend to blunt over time. Bought a Knitter’s Pride Zing fixed circular for a shawl- love the tip but there is a ‘catch’ at the join on 1 side. Think I will try Chiagoo next time

I like bamboo needles for mohair. The slight stickiness helps with the whispy mohair.

I do have interchangeables as well, but I found some new ones for "non twisted cotton or yarn" the prym ergonomic - they dont have a pointed tip, they are round...so you always get every strand when you knit. Your storage looks interesting...selfmade? Thanks for all your fantastic ideas 😀

My first needles were straight bamboo ones. I loved the bamboo, as it's nice and warm to the touch, doesn't click and the grip suited me as a new knitter. But the straight needles caused some pain in my left hand (I'm an English-style flicker). I have now been using laminated wooden interchangeable needles from KnitPro, which I like and is a bit less grippy than the bamboo. I like KnitPro mindful cables better than the plastic ones, and the ones with swivels are good if you want to join cables together easily. Sometimes I do miss the feeling of the bamboo. So maybe I'll allow myself a set of bamboo interchangeable needles in the future! I love super short needles for sleeves, and don't mind magic loop. I really don't enjoy using DPNs, though.

My favourite needles are KnitPro Zing because they are super slippery. I have them as interchangeable circulars and as DPNs. Actually the DPNs sometimes slip out of the projects but I still like them. There are also interchangeable swivel cords by KnitPro now, and they are a great improvement over the normal ones, especially for magic loop. My favourite needle sizes are 3,5mm and 4mm, anything above a 4,5 or 5mm needle is too chunky for my taste and my projects (mostly sweaters, some shawls). Nothing wrong with a chunky accessory though! Since it came up in the comments - I store my fixed circulars and most of my DPNs in a binder full of A5 sized zip pouches, one pouch for each size. Just the fancy ones live in the cases they came in ;)

I have some really old ‘silicone’ needles that are nice But my favorite are Clover bamboo needles

I love my Addi Turbo Rockets 47 inches in all sizes. Two drawbacks: I've had 3 Addi Turbo Rockets break at the joint with the metal. 😭 The other drawback is the kinky plastic cord.

Metal needles sometimes make my fingers smell like garlic, I find I have to wash my hands and clean the needles a lot. I sometimes struggle with fine motor skills and am just learning to knit and my favourite so far are exchangeable wooden needles from Wolle Rödel (a German manufacturer) and PRYM Ergonomic as I find the wire to be nice and pliable and not as stiff as others and the needles aren't too stiff. As my tension tends to be a little loose, I like that the wooden or plastic needles have a little more grip to them so I don't have to worry as much dropping a stitch. Thanks for the tip with the warm water, I will have to try that. I have had that issue with the wire fighting me while I knit.

My first needles were chiaogoo bamboo. I liked them well enough, but ended up with an 5.5"/14 cm interchangeable lykke driftwood set that I adore. Less grippy than the bamboo, but more than metal (I'm a n00b. I'm still scared of dropped stitches). I don't like that I have to regularly check the tips to make sure they're not unscrewing, but I DO like how convenient it is to not need to worry if I've got that size needle with that size cord. I'd love to try carbon fibre needles at some point, but as a musician, I am rather put off by the price. Carbon bows are considered cheap and student grade, yet the carbon needle sets I've seen cost more than the set I've got and have fewer options.

I have a few sets. I love the sharp tips on my stainless steel Chiaogoos but I have the 4" ones and I don't find them as comfortable to use (hand cramps) - I want to switch em for 5". I recently got an Addi set and I do enjoy how sleek the metal feels, though I wish the tips were as sharp as the Chiaogoos! And I definitely need to make sure I don't knit too tight on them because there's a bit of a step with the click connector and too-tight stitches get caught. I also have a bunch of Knit Pro needles and my favorites among them are the Gingers and the Novas. I like mini circulars as well, but I hate the Hiya Hiya minis because the needles are so so so short and awful to use imo.

I agree with Addi needles. I love them. How do you clean your metal needles?

Recently tried Chiagoo swivels. And learned something interesting. I hated them because the yarn kept getting stuck on the swivel, not the place where you tighten the tips. My LYS replaced them with the red cord and said her experience is that some people have trouble with the swivels and others don’t and it seems to her to have something to do with the way an individual knits.

Another vote for Karbonz - especially for double pointed sock knitting. Just a little grippy. I avoid bamboo

Excellent video, thank you. You explain why you like what you like. You don't promote wildly expensive needles made from unobtanium. Instead, you encourage viewers to go with what works for them. Most of my knitting is done on longer single pointed needles (I learnt to knit English style.) Where newer types of needles are concerned, the Addi premium circulars are very nice to work with and I'm a bit of a fan of the Knit-Pro zing DPNs. The colour coding strikes me as a great idea, either for the person who has a couple of projects on the go at the same time or for the person who is looking at a sock they made some time ago and can't remember the needle size. (My memory tends to rely quite a lot on colour.) My current project is being worked on English gauge 10 Aero needles, that's 3.25 mm or a slightly bloated US size 3. They're so old they only have 10 printed on the ends. They were made with a sort of grey enamel coating but they've been used so much that it has worn off the tips and so you can see the stainless steel peeping through. Going by the wear they're definitely among my favourites. There's probably another pair or two in my collection in the same size, as my holiday knitting typically involved seeing if there were any nice wool shops in the area and then buying some wool and the right size of needles to go with the wool.

Usually start off with a shorter cable then swap a tip onto a longer cable as needed and knit onto the longer cable. Hiya Hiya sharps, Chiaogoo lace and have just bought their bamboo for really slippery yarns.

I love my interchangeables but I knit a lot of socks 2 at a time so I have a metal 2mm long circular.

When I learned to knit, as a young girl, it seemed as if there were only long straight metal needles with one point. They could be of steel (yes, even the kind that can become rusty!), stainless steel ('inox') or aluminium. Sometimes a larger size needle was made of plastic in the 1970s. As a teenager I discovered knitting in the round. First with the sets of four long DPNs and then with interchangeable circular needles I could borrow from an 'aunt' (friend of my mother). The next discovery were short DPNs in sets of five for knitting socks; I have them since the 1980s and they're still in use! I'd like to try carbon needles. I do not think I like to knit with bamboo or wood ...

Really pointy and really slippery all the way for me, with really long cables quite similar to you! My favourite brands are ChiaoGoo and Hiya Hiya. I need more ideas about how to store them …

Hi Stephen I use long straight needles as I knit with my right needle under my arm cottage I think it's called as that's how my Nanna taught me but alot of patterns now use circular needles..how is the best way to adapt to circular as I would love to try this method?

Really like my Lykke woods , Knit Picks woods interchangeables and Hiya Hiya metal interchangeables. Shop owner told me to make sure not to let the warm water hit to where the needle and cable are connected since cable will pull out from needle. Yes, it did 😢

With you all the way on the metal! I'm a cheapskate when it comes to needles, I tend to use big box cheap metal circulars in fixed lengths that work for a sweater, and metal dpns from the same. However, I love 16" Chiaogoo red lace circulars for hats.

I think every sweater pattern I've used has called for different needle sizes for ribbing compared to the rest of the sweater. Older patterns, especially, when the bottom edge of the sweater fell at hip height. You want that ribbing to pull in at the waist, as well as the cuffs and neck. If knit on the same size as the body, the stitches when switching from knit to purl just seem to come out slightly larger than in stockinette, and the ribbing can hang loose or even flare out. Of course, most of my work has been stockinette sweaters, not a lot of work with ribbing or lace, so other rules may apply to different fabric types. As for needles, I tend to like the feel of wood needles in my hands. Metal tips are good for "sticky" yarns, such as Shetland yarn used in traditional Fair Isle. Smoother yarns feel better on wood for me, and for slippery yarns like silk, I prefer a "sticky" material for the needle: bamboo, perhaps, or carbon fiber. When I use DPNs, I really don't want needles sliding out of the yarn, so it's wood, bamboo, or carbon fiber for me.

I only knit with fixed ChiaoGoo needles.

Personally, I like to knit with the Kollage Square needles

I hate metal needles! I sold the ones I tried. Karbonz or Symfonie for me. I also prefer a decent tip length and nothing too blunt. The new cords with swivel are a life changer too.

I like my Chiagoos but I can’t get the hang of dpns and magic loop.

Have you tried Addi CraSy Trio? I love them. You can get them in short and long. I love the short ones, but I also like short dpn, 13 or 15cm.

I’m actually very allergic to nickel, and the Addi’s are nickel plated. My skin will peel off 🤪. I’m a HiyaHiya girl, the cord is a little more plastic like and more bendy than the chiaogoo. And they’re surgical steel, so no nickel! Chiaogoo also has no nickel. Just wanted to point it out, because it took me a while to find non wooden ones that had no nickel in them in my early knitting days. I also have some KnitPro/Knitters Pride Mindful needles, they have cables like chiaogoo. Really like those as well. But mostly, I prefer my HiyaHiya’s ❤

That's good to know about the Addi needles as i am allergic to nickel, too.

I'm doing your Parallelalamb with mohair right now. Having 4 sets of needles is a bit challenging. Do you have any tips on how to manage this? Do you do a magic loop between 2 sides? Then only have to handle 2 sets of needles? Thanks for your help!!!

The knitting needle that I would like has not been produced yet! I want a long stem of 6 or 7 inches and needle tips with a short taper. I learnt to knit it in the 70’s with straight Aero brand needles and knitting was done on the tips of the needles- hence the short taper. I thought I had finally found a brand -the GoldTip needles made in the USA but alas the taper was SO long that I was unable to use them.

Sorry it was the 50’s that I learnt to knit -I am in my late 70’s !

I love circular needles also but … being a visual challenged it’s very hard to read the needle size imprinted on the needle… I struggle with this all the time! it would be so nice if they could have different colour cords to represent the different size of the needle …Chiaogoo cords are always red for all needle sizes …if they changed the cord colours to represent different size needles, ( just a few colours or something on the cord that’s different for groups of sizes ) it would sure help with locating needles faster ….this would help me and I am sure many other people with sight issues … just a thought😊

I always break the thinner wooden needles.😬🤣

As a new knitter but decades of crochet i prefer metal needles with a sharp tip. Bamboo drag was 😢

I personally avoid needles that are coloured or dark colour whether metal or bamboo or wood. It makes it harder to see the stitches . Yes they look pretty but try knitting black yarn on black needles 😫 knits picks is a great option if your are looking for a starter/affordable set but if you can, you can’t go wrong with Chiaogoo
