    Glad you enjoyed it! The old knitting books, at first glance, seam pretty dry and boring but I'm loving the little details. I especially like all the advertising for yarn brands.

    I know this is a year old, but I’m just finding it. I thought it was very interesting because I’m getting into knitting socks and thought I’d check a pair of my machine made socks that fit me perfectly. I counted the cast on stitches-84. I’m guessing that I could knit that on a size 16 pin! Loved this. (I’m a nerd, too...and don’t even get me started on grammar.)

    I was surprised how much I enjoyed knitting these socks! I've looked at commercial socks a few time trying to figure out why they fit so well compared to some of my hand knit ones, I really think it's gauge and elasticity.

    I aslo enjoy vintage knitting! Continue to deep dive please! I signed up for a Squidney knits class at Knit and Escape coming up this week. I an excited to hear more tips and tricks from a pro. On the weaving yarn... I have bought yarn a la cone a few times so I can make an entire sweater with out the sticky end problems. Sometimes it's a similar price if I get it from a farm or like a multiple skein discount. It is like getting 5 -10 skeins at once. Why is it is cheaper at weaving shops and sites? I think its because there is 0 packaging or fancy labels. It's usually a tiny piece of paper taped inside the cone, and I am pretty sure it still has some of the spinning oil on the yarn so you have to wash it. It saves the company money not having to fully process it. I personally think it's also because weavers need alot of yarn! and won't spend $500(ish?) to make a table cloth as you would if you bought many skeins of fancy yarn. Hopefully that helps a little!

    Great episode as always! I love history and I love knitting so I'm always very happy when they're combined. I also really enjoy Roxanne Richardson's podcast and Ask A Mortician. I've never seen Vintage Egyptologist so I'm going to go check that out. Thanks for the recommendation!

    The Vintage Egyptologist channel is awesome, but the video that got me hooked isn't actually on her channel, it was something like "Watching the Mummy with an Egyptologist" and you could just tell that she has such a depth of knowledge and is excited to share what she knows.

    I have been doing some deep thoughts on where to get cones of yarn - Webs is having their 47th anniversary sale (up to 50% off...) this month and they have a bunch. I have also seen lots of cones on Etsy. Hope this helps in your yarn shopping!

    In hindsight, perhaps the yarn addict in me does not need to be purchasing cones of yarn... I just bought a 1kg cone from Gist Yarns, I feel like the yarn stash is in danger of reaching critical mass.

    Unless you were family it would have been disrespectful to address an adult female by her first name. Having said that many authoresses were pseudonyms. There is a pattern for Princess Margaretha's silk hose based on the extant pair from the mid-16th c. love your solution for the hem of your sweater. looks fab.

    Hey there , a couple of episodes ago you mentioned that yarn marketed for weavers is much cheaper than yarn sold for knitting . Can you tell us more about that? Where did you get the more economical yarns? What quality is it?

  • @haxtonknits

    I am not an expert in yarn specifically for weaving but I do feel like when I buy yarn for weaving I can get large quantities for less. Right now I'm knitting with a cone of alpaca yarn from Gist yarns. I do feel like the yarn is different from standard knitting yarn.... how to explain this... while alpaca isn't as elastic as wool I feel like this yarn is even less elastic, it's firm, which I suppose is what makes it good for weaving, especially warp yarn.

  • @haxtonknits

    @haxtonknits

    3 жыл бұрын

    Ok, I did the math, my cone of alpaca yarn comes out to $9.90 USD/100g. When compared to popular knitting brands... Cloudborn Fingering $13.98/100g, The Fiber Co $23.00/100g, Berroco $15.00, Cascade Baby Alpaca $18.90. You get the idea, this was just a quick search on yarn.com so prices and quality may vary.
