Knitting a SIMPLE HAT using STRAIGHT NEEDLES

//ABOUT THIS VIDEO//
Do you want to knit a hat but using straight needles? Why would you use straight needles if you have circular ones? Well, it is simpler and easier to handle. If you are uncomfortable with circular needles, you CAN STILL knit a hat.
In this video I show you the steps to knit a hat using straight needles. It is very simple and quick.
* Material*
Medium weight 4 yarn
Use default needles stated on label (US 5 needle)
*Steps*
CAST on the stitches you need per size of hat
- infant = 40 sts, young child = 60 sts, woman = 90 sts, man = 110 sts
- for demonstration, I have cast on 40 sts
KNIT THE BORDER (1" border)
- rib pattern design
Row 1: (3k, 2p)*, repeat * till end of row
Row 2: (3p, 2k)*, repeat * till end of row
Repeat above two rows till you have knit 1".
KNIT THE BODY till you get to the decreasing portion
- 5.5" (infant), 6.25" (woman), 7.25" (man) - from beginning of hat
- choose if you want all stockinette or another form of rib
- for demonstration, I did a rib pattern of 4k,1p
DECREASE THE STITCHES
- the first 6 rows, decrease 1 st from either side every 2 rows
- you can keep following your pattern or do stockinette pattern
Row 1: 5k, k2tog, knit till 7 sts remaining, k2tog, 5k
Row 2: purl till end of row
Repeat above 2 rows till you get to Row 7
Row 7: k5, k2tog, k10, k2tog, k2tog, k10, k2tog, k5 (you are decreasing 4 sts)
Row 8: purl till end row
Repeat above 2 rows till you get to Row 13
Row 13: k2tog till end of row
Row 14: purl till end of row
Row 15: knit till end of row
Row 16: purl till end of row
Row 17: k2tog till end of row
- will have 6 stitches remaining
STITCH the hat to make it circular

    Great video and instructions. How much would I decrease by, if I’ve got 90 stitches?

  • @RieenaKnits

    @RieenaKnits

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you. Now, when you have larger number of stitches, you want the decrease to happen fast because you don't want to knit too much so the hat becomes too big. At the same time you don't want to decrease too fast that it becomes pointy. Where I decreased by 2 stitches for 6 rows, in your case, decrease by 4 stitches evenly spaced within that row. Let me know if this helps otherwise I can provide a mini tips video on the decreasing.

    Great instruction. I have started a children’s . I am doing k2 p2 all the way on 64 stitches. I am at 4 1/2 inches …. Decreasing ??? K2 twice equally on the row (beginning and end) then maintain pattern. Next row normal pattern or do I decrease again ??? Tia

  • @RieenaKnits

    @RieenaKnits

    2 жыл бұрын

    One row decrease and then next row normal (maintain pattern). As you get fewer stitches it will be harder to maintain pattern so you can just start knitting if easier.

  • @RieenaKnits

    @RieenaKnits

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Nasima, for a 6 year old, I would cast on 56 sts. However, to ensure proper fit, after knitting about 5 rows, check to make sure it fits. But remember that yarn will stretch so a little tight is okay. Loose would not be good. You want to maintain even number of sts to handle better for pattern. Hope this helps.

    Hi, I've got stuck on the decreasing stage of the small size. I have the 34 stitches left after doing the six rows and moving on to the next decreasing of 4 stitches. You say to do the normal decrease as set and decrease in the centre. However, the calculations don't match, as I only have 34 stitches, adding up the stitches you have given (unless the text is wrong), you have 38 stitches - If you calculate the given stitches, then this is totalling 38 before the decreasing. So they add up as follows: 5+2+10+2+2+10+2+5 If I take away the 7 stitches each side, I am left with 20 stitches, then two sets of K2tog leaves me with 16 stitches, so where you have K10, should this be K8? This would then be K5, K2 tog, K8, K2tog twice, K8, k2tog, k5. That makes the 34. I really love the video but could I ask you one thing please. I have to use the subtitles due to hearing difficulties, so when I'm reading the subtitles, the captions you add for the instructions get obscured by the subtitles - is there a way you could maybe move the captions to the top area so I can see both the captions and the subtitles. Currently, I'm having to read the subtitles, then when you add the captions, rewind, remove the CC's so can read the captions, then switch the CC's back on and rewind a little so get all the subtitles for the next part. Your assistance in this matter would be appreciated. Thank you.

    @RieenaKnits

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi, thank you. The yarn I have used is stretchy so it would fit. You want to ensure it is not too loose that it falls in the eyes too. Standard stitches for a child are 60, women are 90, and men are 110. Once you cast on those stitches, knit to the half way point and measure with a hat that person may have. That can also provide a good indication of you have enough stitches or not.

    If you would.like a wider border, you can double the length and fold over as well. You can also adjust the length based on an existing hat. Hope this helps.
