I think the "pet peeve" point is a very valid one. There are settings where you don't want to be seen as a "knife person". A bright yellow Victorinox is about the least threatening a knife can get.

I couldn't agree more on the more superior and effective can opener on Wenger compared to Victorinox'. While we don't use can opener much these days (sardines come in tins with easy open lid), the wenger can opener is useful for punching hole and opening packaging boxes.

I have an original wave and it is so much of a chunk that I just stopped carrying it unless I had a specific job that needed pliers. On the other hand as soon as I discovered SwissQlip makes a pocket clip for 91mm Victorinox I have been EDCing my Victorinox Explorer and haven't looked back. I do like my leatherman wave... but my day to day just doesn't require pliers very often at all.

I recently switched to a Victorinox Camper and have been happy with the decision. It fits my needs better than my leatherman squirt which I have enjoyed for quite sometime. One thing I like about the camper is that the saw tip sticks out just enough to identify it by feel and the rest of the tools do not. It makes it easy it grab it and open the saw without looking. I cut quite a few tiny branches that grow into the middle of our wooded trails. It is great that the mini saw is functional and then I don’t need to carry some huge saw when 99% it is needed. Like you, I carry separate blade but lately seem to prefer small fixes blades around 3” or so.

First a belated thank you for answering my most serious question in episode 98. I was so star struck when YOU David, read my question!! 😊 I have a feeling that you are going back to the Victorinox. If not, then I’m guessing that it will take residence in the key bowl by the front door, so that you can make an easy switch when going out in the woods. Back to my original question. I forgot to mention that, even though I drive an eleven year old Kia picanto, my car is operating key free. 😅 But, it probably still is the best choice of knife for cutting off the engine. 😂

As a school teacher, my tool of choice is my Leatherman Wave+ and a customized bit kit. Since I also have a full tool kit in my classroom, one of the things with my Wave+ is the bit extender to go from the Leatherman slot bit to a standard hex bit. My EDC carry is either my carbon handled AD20.5 or my Civiv Cogent. When I taught in Alaska this was augmented by a scout-carried Busse AD.

The one hand opening of every tool, the locking of every tool, better blade steel, and arguably a better toolset has the T4 as the winner for me. I think you may implement the T4 as your edc after you carry it regularly!

  • @etherealicer

    @etherealicer

    Жыл бұрын

I think the toolset is a big point and that is where Victorinox pulls ahead with their countless models. While a T4 easily can/could replace a S18 (or the Mountaineer which is probably the closest Vic model to the T4) it cannot replace a Cybertool. Pretty much the same problem as for the Boker CityTool (really great tools, with a great blade (IHMO best in this style of tools), but the absence of models always brings me back to Victorinox.

@@etherealicer It's mainly personal preference (as everyone knows) which is very subjective to each individual. It depends on what one prioritizes. I prioritize one-hand-open capability, so I'd instantly go Leatherman if forced to pick only one. Obviously one could carry both if they wanted both. My priority is always *SELF-DEFENSE comes FIRST above comfortable convenience.* Yes, even for a smaller blade as you see on that Leatherman, I want to be able to open it with one hand if a dog is munching on my other arm, just as one (of many) selfdefense situations one can find themselves in today. I carry a blade on each side for each hand. I am a prepper first, then after that the secondary convenience tools for fixing little things. I've been in my fair share (though rare in between) selfdefense situations, and I learn from them. I was at a STOP sign on my mountain bike once and someone's pitbull got loose, ran at me barking, I sat still and watched as the dog ran up to me, barked a few times, saw that I wasn't budging, then he ran back to his owner (who was yelling at him). That is a situation you want to learn from. Thankfully the dog was not your stereotypical abused, aggressive pitbull, but they're out there, and you want to be ready if one ever latches onto your arm. So, in that case, two blades on me, one on each side. I have pepper spray as well, but not that great if it's already munching on my arm. 🤔🤣 Anyway, I hope everyone out there starts to think and thus prepare more defensively, not so complacently. 👍

  • @etherealicer

    @etherealicer

@@Northanteus I'm not complacent, I just have enough training with knives to know I don't want to use it to fight (and I prefer grappling, more effective at neutralizing a threat). That said, the escalation of violence is part of the reason people feel so unsafe. Call me a liberal/socialist, but helping people so they don't take drugs (e.g. a working healthcare system, so people don't get addicted to painkillers) seems like a much better approach than to declare war on drugs.

The Leatherman T4 is very nice modern interpretation but it is about 30% heavier than the Wenger/VIctorinox S18. Although useful, the contoured grips of the S18 add considerable width to the knife and something like the slightly longer and less expensive Fieldmaster will give you close the same implements as the S18 yet in a narrower width. Alternatively, if you like the length of the S18, something like the Tinker Small will fit into your watch pocket at a fraction of the weight, size, and cost of the others and you will likely not need a pouch. Looking forward to your exploration.

Every time I’ve tried to “give up” my SAK, I never stick with it. Like you, I always have a SAK regardless of whatever else I’m carrying. Even if I’m doing stuff where I know I’ll be using my Wave or Swisstool Spirit, I still have a my trusty little SAK. I’m curious whether the T-4 will stick long term with you. I might rotate it in here and there, but I know me and I know I’ll always go back. My SAK ranger lives in my bag every single day. If I don’t have my bag, it’s a Climber or a Compact. I’ll rotate everything else, but not that.

I have and use the Leatherman Wave, which is solid and does the job. That said, I also have a Tactiman 8-1 multi-tool that has a wood saw, serrated blade, and a straight blade, among other tools, and all work well. I might also add that the scissors implementation on the Tactiman is the best, most robust version I've seen on a multi-tool. In my experience with the scissors in Victorinox models for example, the tiny, thin wire "spring" often warps or breaks off entirely, rendering the use of the scissors problematic.

What I love about it is that it's a little bit bigger than most victorinoxes and it has some small pliers that come very useful but don't make the tool bulky like leather-mans. The perfect multitool for me would be this with a saw and a locking blade.

Mr. Andersen, you've got me looking cross-eyed at the T4 now. I've been carrying a Victorinox Ranger, almost exclusively, as my EDC multitool. One of the main reasons I love it so much is that it has a serious file - nails, wood, metal, whatever - Honey Badger don't care. The file on the T4 is smaller than that, but has some of that robust capability. Also, the biggest down side to the Ranger, in my view, is that it doesn't have a Phillips head screwdriver. Lo and behold, the T4 does. Yeah, I think I need to check this out.

Also like DCA mentioned, I like the fact that no one looks twice at an SAK. (Except airport security when I accidentally tried to go through with a small SAK in my briefcase - you'd swear I was trying to steal a nuke - I still walk with a limp as a result 😬.) If looking for harder use Leatherman is a good option. Good luck making the choice.

When I first began looking at Victorinox Swiss Army Knives I quickly realised that the Swiss Champ was the most versatile, having the most tools whilst still being a comfortable size to carry and use. After 47 years of EDC my Swiss Champ, I can say with confidence that it was the best decision I made. I added a Leatherman Pocket Tool, which I quite liked, but for which I was offered a new, boxed, Leatherman Super Tool as as a straight swap! So, bye, bye Pocket Tool and hello Super Tool! I added a Leatherman Crunch and a Micra too, but eventually reverted back to carrying just my Swiss Champ as that was my most used tool, and it remains so. The Swiss Champ meets my usage requirements perfectly and it continues to be immensely versatile for such a compact multitool.

A big benefit that wasn't brought up here. The leatherman has a bit kit adaptor that you can use. Which gives it a lot more options than a sak.

For as long as you both have been making knife content, do you feel it has slowed or increased you knife purchases? Seeing all the knife options, has it made you a knife snob or do you still find budget knives appealing? Thank you for the work you all do.

I carried a Victorinox for years, then started carrying the Leatherman Wave, which I loved as it had everything, but was just too bulky. I then went with a lightweight folder with a small Leatherman. I found I didn’t use the pliers much on any Leathermans, so I got the T4 Free and carry it now as my only knife as the knife is heavy enough for most tasks. If I need a bigger knife now, I just carry a camp knife, but that’s not an EDC for me. The T4 Free is small enough to carry comfortably in a pocket (I don’t like belt holders), and is very useful, and is my favourite. I only carry my wave, when a task requires it such as fixing a fence wire or something like that.

Love my S18. I do have a skeletool Leatherman which I like as well, but I just enjoy the Victorinox. I like that is is smooth and curved in the pocket. I don't use a clip for these things, just stick in pants or jacket pocket.

I have a Civivi Elementum that I love. love. love. I actually bought two and combined them so I could get the D2 satin blade with gray micarta scales. If I were to upgrade to something with better steel, but the same aesthetic and also sticking with micarta, what should I consider?

Leatherman comment: I bought my first Leatherman in the 1980’s. It went with me into the military. It served time in my tackle box. It spent years on my workbench in my un-air conditioned garage and eventually, the utility drawer of the house I currently I have in my mid 50’s. It still looks and functions as NEW other than the knife being sharpened a few times over the years. It’s beautiful. When I bought a new truck, I decided to put a Leatherman in the glovebox. I went premium and got a Leatherman Charge+ TTi Titanium. It stayed unused in the glovebox for 8 months. The first time I used it, there was rust on one of the tools. This does not look like it will have the longevity of my first Leatherman. Maybe it’s time to look at other brands.

Greetings DCA, I'm a fan of both SAK and Leatherman. I edc both of for work. One thing that the T4 is missing for my needs is a saw. I have found having a saw for cutting rope has save the edge on my knife for other tasks...

I have both (albeit the non-locking version of the Victorinox). The Leatherman is for daily carry due to it’s one hand opening and locking. The Victorinox is for travel as it doesn’t look threatening and a locking blade is forbidden in many countries.

Been carrying the Leatherman Wingman as my EDC for probably 5-7 years now. I've had to use every tool on that multitool. Blister pack cutter is my favorite tool on it. My one and only complaint is it comes with a combo blade...i only wish it had the full blade of the Leatherman Sidekick, its more outdoorsy twin.

I am very interested in this comparison tbh. On one hand I really want to choose the Leatherman T4 because of the one hand ability it offers, but when you take pliers out of the discussion that’s where things start getting pretty foggy for me. Nothing on the market currently THAT I’VE SEEN can take the Free P2 off my side because of the completely one hand ability. I really don’t like the serrated blade, but like you referred to if I need a blade I’m going for the one in my RF pocket not what’s in the pouch on my belt lol.

Saying that I also carried and still carry a leatherman on a my belt. Both are great tools made by great companies and I am partial to my Swiss but both are equal in my eyes.

Hi. I have both knives. In terms of practical use, free T4 is better because I can fold and unfold a tool with one hand. I have to mention that blade of free T4 is very sharp. My that yellow Victorinox fell from 1 meter height ant there was a small crack in the plastic cover of knife.

A recent fan and a novice within the hobby. But an eternal enthusiast since my childhood. I’m looking for a multi-tool combo recommendation. A SAK & Leatherman (Pliers style). The SAK will becoming an EDC. It can have the corkscrew don’t want it to have a ‘full’ Phillips head driver, due to having the other multi tool. The pliers multitool will be more work focused. Sliding them into my pocket when I leave to work and then most likely (80% of the time) sitting on my dresser the rest of the time. They won’t need to have a blade due to the fact I carry a folding knife and then the SAK as well. If you can keep the combo price hovering $200 will be lovely.

Interesting comparison. I've carried a Leatherman since they came out, the WAVE since that came out. More recently got interested in the SAK. I’ve been carrying both and comparing. Went from Huntsman to Ranger because I wanted the metal file and was willing to pocket a 5 layer SAK. It can do many chores, but I find I use pliers a lot.

When someone starts to talk about edc, I take it with a grain of salt, they normally looks like it just came out of a new box. Nice to David's knife had some wear & tear on it, 1:58. I have carried a P-38 (can opener for c-rats) since 1985. I do use it. My wife will spend $40 on a fancy electric can opener that will work for about two months. I also carry a Leatherman wave for the last 20 years.

For anyone looking into a SAK I highly urge you to look at the Ruike LD series. They are larger, use G10 scales, 12c27 steel on the blade that actually locks and is heat treated properly, use larger and more robust tweezers and come in 5 different varieties of tool stacks. I got mine while ago and can say it's quite good

I used to carry a SAK Tinker. When the pliers got added to the Tinker to make the Super Tinker, I swapped out the Tinker. The pliers are nice on the ST. But they’re not that useful. I considered them to be tweezers on steroids. When the Leatherman Juice was introduced, I went with it because I liked the pliers better. I now carry a Leatherman T4. It suits my needs better. I like having a file in my pocket. Something the Juice and the Tinkers never had. For a multitool, I carry an older Victorinox SwissTool. They’re solid and great quality.

I like the idea of the t4. However it's so bulky. I pulled apart a Rev and used the knife and clip side to hold all the tools except the plier based tools. It's not one handed but it's slim and lightweight. You can do the same with the wingman to have a one handed opening and closing blade. However you'll need to re-profile some of the tools slip joint surfaces to get them to lock up well. Although you can swap the blade for the scissors if you want to fit it up too.

I carry a Leatherman Wave in a pouch. Have a Leatherman Super Tool leather pouch I carry next to it. In which fits my EDC pistol (either Sig 365XL or CZ P10C) magazine. Got in a habit of a Gerber multitool and Leatherman in the military, so two pouches is not an issue. The pouch also looks less like a regular mag pouch so eyebrows do not raise.
