Is the Arc the best Leatherman Multitool? Comparing to Wave, Charge, & other tools with

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The multi tool and every EDC community is abuzz over the brand new ‪@LeathermanToolGroup‬ Arc. This review will compare it to many of their other tools including the Charge + TTi, the Surge, the old wave, the Juice, the Micra, the OHT, the Free P4, and more. Even an old Gerber multitool shows up. The Arc is Leathermans newest tool featuring all one handed external opening tools and the Free magnet technology. It has a blade featuring the magical supersteel known as Magnacut. Also Pete joins me from Cedric and Ada Outdoors to do some serious edge retentions tests on the new Magnacut blade. Does it stack up?

    I just wish they would allow full tool customization. I imagine that each slot has a number of compatible tools that fit, & you could just pick which tools you want. That would be worth a significant up charge to me.

    Everyone would love that. That's probably why they won't though. We'd all buy the tool we wanted and not buy anything else, lol. I'd probably take the Free P2 and throw the Arc's blade, small screwdriver, and regular driver bit holder in there.

    I've carried a Leatherman tool since 1990. If I lose the one I have I feel naked and replace it within a few days. That said, I'm not spending a shit-ton of money on any multi-tool. My current Leatherman is a Rebar, and that works just fine for me. I've pretty much done every repair or whatever with a Leatherman except for pulling a tooth or amputating a limb, but, hopefully, someday (as long as the tooth or limb is not one of my own).

    Best review of the Arc I have seen. Love the open & hidden sarcasms. I have two Leatherman (the Wingman & now the Arc) and two Victorinox (The Champ & the Swiss Tool). Love all of them, but I do think that the blade of the Arc is a true improvement. I just love how hard I can use it, and it just keeps cutting & cutting. It is just very frustrating with all my other multitools to use the blade and have to resharpen it after some use. Not with the Arc. Magnacut is really amazing in that respect. Most of the other points you made, I totally agree.

    I totally agree about the original wave being the best multitool. I actually found mine a few years ago at work and asked around for the owner and never found them so I kept it, I carried it to the point that I started just having to have one on me all the time. I even thought I lost it at one point so I orderd the wave plus, and like the Arc it has the changeable bits, I honestly don't like those, especially the eyeglass bit holder. They're too small and the holder doesn't keep them in well. The original wave is still their best ever imo.

    I've loved my Charge + TTI for years, and being left handed, I end up using the cutting hook probably way more than most (most accessible cutting function for left hand for opening plastic packaging, cutting zip ties, etc.). It looks like the saw and scissors are what you say are left hand primary tools - how uncomfortable is it to open the knife blade with left hand?

    I'm in the I have specific/specialized tools for specific tasks camp. But for my multitool usage I keep a couple sets of DeWalkie or MilWalt around that are comfortable and strong/sharp enough to be functional. Hell, being bright yellow/red helps me find em if dropped or in a hunk toolbox. That said. When it comes to my single blades. I go for higher quality.

Instead of making stuff like this they really need to bring back the juice xe6, all the tools I use but a lot more compact, I would carry the super tool more but its basically a small brick. I bought my mom one of those Gerber truss multi tools and she uses it around the house and for garden projects, the only thing I don't like about it is how hard the little locking mechanisms are to get a fingernail on to disengage them.

    Wow! I haven't seen one of the original Leatherman tools in decades! I bought one back when they were fairly new. I wore it and used it so much for so many years, the edges of the sheet metal handles started cracking. By that time, those were no longer available and I bought a Wave to replace it. But since then, I have had to replace the wave three times. I lost one, the 2nd one had several parts break after a few years, and the third one was doing fine until the pliers broke. They don't make them as good as they used to be. The Arc might be better, being made in the USA. But that's serious money.

    I bought the ARC mainly because it had a Magnacut blade and I kinda regret it. I immediately noticed I needed to sharpen/hone it a bunch. I tested it against my Charge TTI+ on two very big cardboard boxes and I neeeded to strop the magnacut blade 5 times and zero times on the s30v. The blade shape on the charge seems like a better slicer and the nub on the ARC can get in the way. I think they went conservative on the heat treat an negated using magnacut. I do like the usable cap lifter and beefier small bit. I thought the larger scissors would be better at cutting but I was wrong. I like have the serrated blade an hook on the charge for cutting rope. I like the awl used it on belt so far but don't know why they left out the hole for sewing, doesn't seem to take away anything to have it. I like that the ARC has a hard spot for hammering but it is awkward for everything I've tried it for so far.

  • @vgman94

    @vgman94

    7 ай бұрын

    “But it is awkward for everything I used it for so far” refers to the hammer function, right? I’m really interested in the Arc, but the wait is making me consider the TTI+ or Surge. I like the magnets, and the ability to splay the tools out with a button. But the Charge has the ruler and gut hook, and a comparable blade steel (my guess is you got a bad individual one). Smaller scissors and no hammer though. It’s really hard to decide.

  • @buck.99

    @buck.99

    7 ай бұрын

    @@vgman94 I was referring to the hammer as awkward. The gap in the center means you have to offset your strike for a small object and the overall shape is hard to hit something in a corner where space is limited. The charge tti does have a gut hook and I like knife blade better on the tti. The surge is much bigger and heavier than the ARC or the charge, I never carry it. But the arc is bit longer folded but maybe just a little flatter compared to the charge and seems a bit lighter but they are so close it’s hard to tell. No ruler on the ARC. The charge tti small bit is pretty weak I’ve snapped a few bits and had to send it in to be fixed when I jammed a bit in and broke it off. The Arcs small bit is more robust and easier to see which way it fits in. For the Arc I really like how the tools can be used with out opening it up and they are easier to open with gloves but it’s design doesn’t feel as good in the hand. The magnets and detents are nice and it stays closed very well some Leathermans start to open in the pocket when they are broken in.

  • @vgman94

    @vgman94

    7 ай бұрын

    @@buck.99 I never heard of the but driver being weak on the Charge. That’s new to me. The hammer seems worse than I thought. They really seem even now, or TTI+ being better considering the ruler for my uses. Or maybe I should get a load of dedicated tools instead lol. Thank you for the detailed reply. It gave me a lot of important things to consider.

    A wave with the scissors and the t slot of the surge in place of the saw and file is a much better tool. The original wave also had a really annoying habit of pinching the hell out of your hand if you slip off a bolt when using the pliers. Other than that, the wave I'd agree is one of the better tools out there.

    Thank you very much for your content, pithy commentary and sardonic humor. You’re most entertaining and knowledgeable. Gotta say, that I would have preferred the serrated blade/hook cutter to the scissors. I’ve cut a lot of zip ties. I hardly ever used the scissors. For what do you frequently use the scissors? I’m curious as the “larger” scissors do not really have that much larger cutting surface (7/8“) than the Wave or Charge’s scissors (13/16”). I can’t see a 1/16” making that much a difference.

    I’ve used the scissors for fingernails, paper, etc. for zip ties the serrated didn’t work for me. I don’t like the handles of the TTi a ton so I’ve stuck with my wave for years. So if the hook works best for this I wouldn’t know. For zip ties the point of the main blade works better than the blunt tip of the serrated to get under a zip tie. Or you can pinch the lock on the zip tie and twist with the pliers. So no I’d rather not use the serrated on the wave for zip ties. The Scissors have mostly a beefier neck- however I appreciate all the data points you used to trying to say you don’t like the scissors and missed the serrated for something I never used it for.

    For one handed opening of all tools without switching hands. Flip the tool over in your hand and use your index finger instead of your thumb to open the tool. Its pretty easy once you realize you can

    I think building sets spreads the multi-tool sickness lots of people, I also bought my first leatherman (A leatherman wave) to built sets, sets for a haunted house. I’ve handled the Arc, and agree with your assessment although it feels more likely to pinch my finger meats when opening or closing than my G10 charge.

    I use the serrated blade the most for my HVAC job for cutting the jacketing and insulation of flexible duct and then the wire cutter to cut the steel band. For me the serrated blade is the most essential. If I'm carrying a blade out to dinner I like the Skeletool. I'm looking for a knife with a Lapis Lazuli handle as my next dressy carry knife.

    Suggestion: This might seem like a less than likeable variety of knife to review, but in the spirit of giving some love to purpose built knives that truly are tools, I have a suggestion; The Olfa knife. Yes, it's a utility blade used most commonly for construction type purposes... I'm sure this will be popular in this crowd... Anyhow I've used and hated quite a few utility knives through the years. I tried out the Olfa L-5 recently for general jobsite utility razor needs (especially drywall) and I can't say enough good things about it. Try it out. You might catch a slightly different knife crowd with this one.

    I find the saw and scissors pretty easy to open if I use my middle finger to take them out (almost like a less pretty spydie flick). Then I Use my thumb to open them all the way. Very little hand movement if I do it that way. Thanks for the vid!

    @@AdvancedKnifeBroAhh that sucks. Awkward hand maneuver it is. Sorry if I missed it, but have you had binding issues with your pliers? If I got anything with my cutters, or out bay force in the handles, the plier head binds. I can wiggle my handles and get it back to normal. But it’s to the point that if I open my the tool to aggressively , it binds them

    I have been thinking of getting the arc but I keep seeing so many of them break. The knife or pliers breaking really easy has been keeping me from it. My little leatherman Rev has been a beast, I have tried to break it and it's still going strong but it's a small multitool. I feel like the arc could be so much better. I may just give the surge a try instead.

    at 16:58 regarding the mislabeled bottle opener on the website: I had sent an email to their technical support on launch day about the mislabeled diagram on their website, and their support staff informed me that the site was correct and the can opener and bottle opener are the same tool, and this was a recent change. Having received my arc, their tech support folks are full of it.

    I’m like maybe I’m doing it wrong… and sure you could probably get open if you lifted all around the cap with the tip… but my gut tells me you can’t effectively open it with this any more than you can with the awl. The pry bar opener is great. Also I filled out a leatherman survey once where they showed that tool on the pry-er as being a type of bottle opener. It works much better than the combo on the wave.
