Knife Making - Forging a Small San Mai Kitchen Knife

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I watched Ilya Alekseyev from the ''That Works'' KZread channel forge some extremely beautiful japanese kitchen knives with a san mai construction and I was quite intrigued by the way he built up and constructed the san mai. So much so I decided to have a go at it myself. turned out alright I think. I highly recommend checking you Ilyas video: • How to Forge a [San Ma...

I love it more when you're working on the tang and because of improper grip of the tongs, you hit the piece too hard and it spins into low earth orbit, whizzing past you face. Yep, its always safe in the forge, no hazards at all.

@@aaronyoung8301 I love when I drop a piece of hot steel and it lands on something that I really don't want melting under the heat, so my quick thinking tells me to golfer swing my tongs and send the thing flying instead of just picking it up, mainly because II know I'd take WAY too long trying to pick it up with the friggen tongs in the first place.

According to that works you should shape the back of a knife before the blade, and they recommend tapering the insert so it's wider at the front of the insert in order to compensate for the front of the blade being narrower, at least that was my understanding, I've never made a blade in my life but here I am trying to tell someone how to do it.

I was applying a thin layer of ''clay'' (it's really fireplace sealant but it does the same thing) it helps protect the steel a wee bit when quenching. There is not really a need for it when oil quenching, more common to do with a water quench but I thought I'd try it out just for the heck of it. Thank you!
