Knife Knowledge: Stropping technique

This is an opportunity to share simply the technique used when stropping. We do not go into great detail all the different reasons to strop, but we do touch on them. It is important to understand the pressure and angle used, as well as how to use the different types of strops. This is part of a series. We will elaborate on why you would want to know this technique, as well as how it will be affected, when you apply and use abrasives. We will also do a video on stropping progressions: using different strops in a certain order to achieve a certain effect.

I was able to find a cork strop. Bernal cutlery in San Francisco sells one. I just purchased it, so I’ll have to let you know how it performs.

I've been loving your videos! So is it that you don't want to be more than 4 percent, or 4 degrees? There's a really big difference and I don't want to mess it up.

Sorry if I missed spoke. Thanks for your support! If you're using a knife that is soft (60 or below on hardness), then you might want to increase the stropping angle to no more than 2° over the sharpening angle. Meaning, if you sharpened at 15° then you might strop at 15.4° to up to 17°. If the knife is harder than strop at the same angle as your sharpening angle.

Why would one load the strop ? If the sub-strait is more coarse than the compound won't help, if the sub strait is less coarse, then the compound will make the strop worse

This is all done according to the research provided by knife grinders. I have found everything in their book to be absolutely true for myself. It's one thing to remove the excess metal from the Apex but it's another thing to clean up the edge by using diamonds. I have a different video in which I talk about the shape of each burr. This particular video was just about the technique of Stropping. Even though different types of leather can have its own contribution of abrasion, with mild pressure and diamonds, we can clean up the excess material off of the Apex. When I referred to the different burrs. Each one calls for a different way to attack it. I'm not going to explain all of that in this rebottle. I have an entire video on it. I don't know if you've read their latest book. It's a great read and I have found that the information has made a difference in the in result. You'll see that I have gotten sub 100 scores on the BESS tester. I have even obtained scores of 50 and 63 on camera with ease. I will be doing a video soon on how to make a laser. I also do everything pretty much an edited to show that it doesn't have to be too complicated to achieve this. So the results speak for themselves. Enjoy your other videos. How often do you need to reapply the compound to the strop? I'm using green compound. Do you just leave it on there each time your done or clean it off?

You leave it on. The only add more when you need to. All of my leather is filled with compound all the time. If you feel like there's metal build up on the leather than you might want to strip it.
