Klipsch The Nines Review | Best Powered Speaker Yet?

Ғылым және технология

Since Klipsch introduced The Fives in 2020, many other brands have jumped on the bandwagon, modernizing powered speakers with HDMI ARC inputs for a soundbar alternative that appeals to audio enthusiasts. So what did Klipsch do with the category it created? It went bigger, because Klipsch. The Nines are the largest in a trio of powered speaker options that promise an audio experience so big you don't need a separate receiver and passive speakers -- maybe not even a subwoofer. But are they good enough to scratch an audiophile's itch? We put The Nines through rigorous testing to find out just how good they are and whether their plus-sized stature is a asset or a liability.

Hey everyone! Thanks for watching. A few updates since I recorded: 1. Power distribution is 100w RMS to each woofer and 30w to each tweeter - double all that peak. 2. Sub x-over freq. is 60Hz. Thanks again, and let me know what you think!

Klipsch is on a stroll and I love to see it, especially when the market is clearly going “wireless” or at least all in one style systems. I can’t wait for a proper floor-standing goodness to happen in this same style. (I know about KEF, not my sound, not my brand). It’s getting spicy in this market and I’m all for it! Great review!

This is the first I've heard of bi-amping a speaker at this kind of price range. Even B&W's Formation Duo which costs $5,000 doesn't bi-amp. How much would it cost to power something the same way? It's like 4 mono-blocks for stereo at $1,500 with the speaker... Does it have an active crossover with filters cause that would be insane at that price point?

@@techsamurai11countless powered speakers are bi-amped and have been for many years. Many times at far cheaper price points than these. Even a $100 (sale price, MSRP was closer to $200) Samsung soundbar I bought 3 years ago was bi-amped.

@techsamurai11 actually digital crossovers are not at all expensive. Bi-amping adds expense by doubling the needed Amps, but the Amps are actually pretty cheap, especially in the lower end, and the Amps for the tweeters don't need much power.

Instead of plugging the bass ports you can also look in the user manual to turn off the Bass Boost setting that is on by default. There is a trick to turning it off. It's Klipsch's like artificial bass processing stuff and they sound much better with it off.

Not only was there a hefty pun to start with, but quality alliterations. 👏👏👏 Nines look good. I like how speakers are starting to get a bit bigger. I miss the old days where floor speakers came with 12" woofers. They should get rid of the volume knob and lower the price. No one is going to use the knob with a speaker that big. More usable for smaller speakers where you sit closer. Yes I'm a sloth.

Bi-amplification with possibly filters to reduce high and low (would that be an active crossover?) - it's going to be hard to beat that. If you bi-amped the Klipsch RFs, I wonder if that might redeem the Marantz and Towers.

I bought the Nines 3 weeks ago after owning the Fives for a year. The Fives are amazing for their size however they lacked precision and power delivery in my large lounge. The Nines have better frequency separation, with mids more refined. The soundstage is much more open and free. I have them slightly toed in with the tweeter just above ear height sat on the Klipsch Fives stands, (hoping to get the Nines Stands if they become available). The real chefs kiss is the incredible deep bass. They are hitting 21hz in my lounge with dynamic bass enabled. In fact I have to reduce bass output on the included app to -3, reduce the pre-set to wall setting (-3db) to tame it, no subwoofer needed. Albeit the room sonics will affect the bass so take these settings with a pinch of salt. If I want to crank the volume up I find the sound is more natural with dynamic bass disabled. The app is still buggy at times and crashes when I turn dynamic bass on and off. So work to be done but could not be happier with the quality of finish and sound. So I agree with Calebs review, they are every bit as exciting as my previous separates system which contained a Yamaha AS1000, B&W CM7s, CA DacMagic, Van Den Hull interconnects and Chord Odyssey cables hooked up to my pc via toslink. The simple setup is great, without negating sound quality.

Yes Fives are awesome but soundstage isn't the largest. Larger soundstage with more airiness is my biggest critique which isn't really a gripe since they do a lot of things well and are so small. However improvements in those two areas are what I would look for in the sevens and nines.

Thanks for the great review. I own the Fives, but I am very interested and excited by the Sevens and Nines. I suspected these would be amazing speakers. Klipsch engineers really accomplished something special with the Fives. I was not a Klipsch fan before I owned them. But I am now and I adore them. They punch waay above their weight and price. Especially since the Fives have dropped to $500 or so from $800 two years ago. I took the measurements of the Nines and mocked them up with cardboard cutouts in my room. they are very large indeed. I concluded my basement room is just too small for them (10 x 15 ft). But I am seriously considering upgrading to the Sevens since they are considerably larger than the Fives and I would love some more power. Would the sound gains versus the Fives be dramatic? Maybe not, but then I could move my old Fives up to the living room (or gift them to my brother). Since the eARC makes all these Klipsch speakers automatically power on with the TV and volume control by the TV remote - there is no second remote needed. And their small size and good looks gives them, as Zeos Reviews says - a high wife-acceptance-factor (WAF). I had a big component system back in the 80s. Radio Shack Mach one speakers, Marantz receiver, Technics CD player, graphic equalizer, dual Akai cassette deck and linear Sony turntable. Took up a lot of room. The Fives, and certainly these Nines, reproduce sound with power and accuracy (and warmth) beyond what I had back then. And in a very simple and attractive package. The only other powered speaker I was considering as an upgrade were the $900 Swans MK300 Mark II based on Zeos' review, but I am such a Klipsch fan now, I think it's going to be the Sevens or just enjoy the Fives for a few more years.

Gets the Sevens brother you will not regret it. I had the Fives and I agree they are great especially for their size they jam. The Sevens though are louder and the bass is better. Found myself seeking a subwoofer for the Fives looked at Klipsch SPL-100. Never pulled the trigger and glad I didn’t. My room measures 17x15. The Fives filled it nicely at 3/4 volume which was what I mostly listened to them at. Slightly lower volume for Movies/Gaming or utilizing bluetooth for youtube video audio The Sevens I push to half volume for most of my music listening they are just that efficient. I’ve only cranked them once to about 3/4 volume when nobody was home and by god my room was shaking. I have no clue what full blast would be like honestly to scared to do that. Only thing is I wish they had kept the grey/black grill covers on the walnut veneer from the Fives. I’m not a fan of the creme color so I went with the black this time and they are sexy.

If you have a small/smallish room, the soundbar is probably a better option, given the amount of air these things move. For mid-large size rooms however, these will blow the soundbars away. And that’s not even accounting for the wider soundstage, but perhaps that part could be considered a wash since The Nines don’t have any height or rear channel capabilities like that of the soundbars.

For the same reason I'd prefer a "dumb" TV with a smart box plugged into it (that I can replace when it inventively gets outdated), I prefer having zero "smarts" in my powered speakers. I have zero issue buying my own Chromecast/AirPlay streamer and plugging that into it's Aux input for example. That way when Spotify eventually releases it's HiFi streaming tier, I won't be upset that my speakers aren't in the "supported devices" list. lol. I'll buy my own external streamer! Put more money/R&D into the sound/build instead!

There are a lot of dummies out there who just want plug and play. I agree with you though. I'd rather have passives with a receiver or processor that can be upgraded individually. Plus, if the amp goes out, you don't lose the speakers too

I have to wonder who these are for? I own the fives and on stands they take up significant real estate compared to a soundbar. I also have a 5.2.2 home theater in the basement. Each room should be fit for purpose. These are huge and expensive. The other issue is, like the fives they only process PCM stereo. Most content out there is mixed for 5.1 or more. So it's not clear to me what my Sony tv does with that. I try to use 2.0 mixes when available and not too much additional work .

Thanks for this review of "The Nines" from Klipsch. I have long felt that when a company like Klipsch builds a well-integrated actively-powered loudspeaker it offers a better bang-for-your-buck audio value in their $1500 price range than what could be achieved by purchasing 2 passive speakers and a separate amplifier for that same cost. I'll also say that I can definitely appreciate the simplicity of setup provided by active speakers like "The Nines" when they allow you to avoid dealing with a big power amp. Years ago I invested in Paradigm "Reference Active 40" loudspeakers and I have been a fan of powered speakers ever since. I applaud companies like Klipsch for making these available for those who want good sound at an affordable price.

I returned the nines 1 week after buying them. Nice for movies but for music I think they sound terrible. Tried every form of tweeking but it just sounds compressed and enclosed. I really like Klipsch speakers but this is nothing more than a nice alternative for a soundbar. For 60% of the price you can get a far better system on the second hand market.

Bought this speaker and as absolutely amazing it is for music which its absolutely insane, for movies it just wasnt very good. Tried it out for about 3 weeks. I watch 3-4 hours of movies/tv shows everyday so i got to test it out pretty throughly. Even went back and did some James Bond action films to get the some of the better soundstage movie intense scenes. It is pretty good at everything but the voices no matter what EQ, customizing the EQ, turning off the bass, putting on night mode, they all were muttered and hard to hear the person. You could hear everything they said but it just wasnt clear. It definitly is strange having the entire movie crystal clear with amazing clarity with the music/soundstage but when anyone talks its just a huge disapointment. Definiltey recommend as the best music speaker ive ever heard in my life, even at the highest volume you could ever want it at
