Klipsch Heresy IV Review w/ Upscale Audio's Kevin Deal

Ойын-сауық

upscaleaudio.com/products/kli...
"You just can't help smile and have a good time with these speakers," says Kevin. The Heresy III was so damn good, and the IV is even better. A rear port adds efficiency, and a larger cabinet makes sure bass stays deep. Sensitive, with a great midband--these speakers are a perfect match for quiet, high bandwidth tube amp such as PrimaLuna.

    I recently restored a pair of 1971 H700 Heresy Speakers and gave then the "Super Heresy" mods: An Eminence Delta Pro 12A woofer, 4" Bass Reflex port in the rear and the creme de la creme, a sMAHL tweeter horn with a B&C DE120 Neodymium driver. The results have been nothing short of transformational and I've no doubt these are too, when compared to previous iterations!

    In the early 1970's I had a roommate in college that had a pair of Heresy speakers with a Phase Liner 700 putting out 350 watts per channel. He would play Quadorphenia and the neighbors would come out of their apartment to see if there was a storm coming.

    Good video Kevin, and I'm not a huge fan. I'm a fan of Klipsch and low power tube amps, like under 10 watts. I say this with a smile on my face and kindness, I always remembered talking to you on the phone about 12 years ago, when I mentioned SET amps and high sensitivity speskers you told me "you don't know what you're talking about". Bygones my friend, we are on the same team. All of us have great music. Thanks for the vid!

    Paired with a good tube amplifier, in my case a Line Magnetic 211 iA, the Heresy IV is an absolute dream team. This plastic openness and transparency in the mid-high range is unique. I like listening to live recordings, you can literally reach into the stage. The audiophile virtues such as resolution, localization and spatiality are also at a very high level with the Heresy IV. Other loudspeakers, even high-quality ones, often bored me relatively quickly, but this is completely different with the Heresy IV, these are captivating and you feel like you are right in front of the stage. You definitely shouldn't let the Klipsch haters stop you from listening to this phenomenal speaker, it's absolutely worth it.

    I don't like the port, but it probably works better for conventional setups. Sealed box Heresy are meant to be placed in the corners, on the low angled stands. In the right room, they produce jaw dropping bass. The corner placement and low, angled stand tame the "shrill" high end by mostly eliminating direct wall & floor reflections.

    Speaker break in confuses me. I bought some B&W 702's which sounded much better after a few days and even B&W say they only need 15 hours running in time but almost everyone on the internet says 100,150 hours...i just don't see what there is to break in for that long. If a driver was so badly constructed that it's still changing form after 150 hours surely it won't stop there and will fall apart eventually? Any advice on this?

  • @joshuasterling2144

    @joshuasterling2144

    3 жыл бұрын

    Think about the driver as a membrane. As it extends and contracts repeatedly the resistances on the surround loosen up, the bass gets cleaner and faster and the bass and the treble blends better. You should be able to tell the difference in about three days of burn in material. The most dramatic changes can happen in the first half of break in....even my personal PA speakers sound completely different now after two years of being constantly on. Same for all the speakers we have.

  • @ruk2023--

    @ruk2023--

    @@joshuasterling2144 Thanks for the explanation. I should have been clearer - I can see the break in happening over a few days listening but people claiming 150 hours listening (30 days at 5 hours a day!) are surely wrong.

    A car engine is generally held to broken in at 1000 miles. A car running 60 mph, a mile a minute, at 2000 rpms will make 2,000,000 turns in 1000 miles. A tweeter operating at 10khz will make 36,000,000 cycles in an hour. Draw your own conclusions about long break in times.

Off topic: despite your mocking, “Imaging” is not a curse nor is it a snobbish audiophile’s fad. Imaging gives depth of stage. Nothing wrong with that. And off topic: You can still smile with Westlake Audio speakers which are quite dynamic and have the jump factor, despite the fact that 3watts per channel wouldn’t cut it. Mind you, these Klipsch would do better with more power than people think they need, despite their 99dB efficiency. How do I know? I tried it. To each his own.

And most such speakers are built with higher quality drive units than Klipsch uses; take the old Altec VoTs for an example and the original Altec drivers now made by Great Plains Audio. You see many Klipschies modifying their speakers by replacing the drivers and horns with Altec and JBL Pro drivers, you never see Altec and JBL hornies replacing parts with Klipsch parts, though they often go back and forth using Altec, JBL and Emilar parts.
