The reason I really enjoy watching you is mostly how humble you are compared to 'other' modelers. Never change Boyd.

IMO the most iconic ship design ever after the Enterprise. It was away ahead of its time.

Please include those bright "rear" lights just below the bridge segment we see as the ships fly away from the camera. I remember that from when I first saw the movie in the theaters.

Very cool! I like that Polar Lights thinks things through so well, much better than AMT/Ertl did. I look forward to seeing this beside the 1/350 Enterprise, even if it is not finished.

This is what I think of when I hear the words "Klingon Battlecruiser." Revell also had a nice D-7 kit with a bit more detail than the Polar Lights and AMT kits. It was sort of an inbetween this TMP version and the TOS Klingon ship. Some people think it was based off the model Greg Jein built for the DS9 Star Trek 30th anniversary special, "Trials and Tribble-ations." Too bad it's out of print!

I remember the kit. It was from Revell Germany and the thing that hurt it was it was hard to get here in the states. They also released the 1:600 scale TOS Enterprise at the same time. It has a badly misshaped saucer and some awful looking paneling lines all over it. Best thing about it was it had pre cut windows for lighting.

Thanks for the unboxing. Actually, regarding the 72" long ship, it would be interesting to see a video on how you can cleanly and efficiently drill, cut and prepare windows and shapes for the model kit.

I JUST snagged one of these bad dude kits after all these years and cannot wait to build and paint it! I came straight to your vids to help me start! Mine is a new version of the kit, with the lighting kit included, but mine will be mostly out of box. Is there good reason to get the after market parts? The metal parts? They are harder to find now...but I defer to your build. Thanks for the videos!

Hoping the Excelsior gets a 1/350 scale model, though it will probably be 4ft long

The instructions that come with this kit have some errors or directions that aren’t very clear. I believe they have an updated set of instructions that you can download from their website now.

I've been anticipating this build. Felt like waiting for The Beatles to get back together in 1972. That never happened, but hopefully this will result in a complete build series with the Tena Controls lighting.. Nobody does it better than Boyd.

Yes, unfortunately a couple of builds I featured did not get completed. Some things happened beyond my control on those. Rest assured this will be a complete series.

Wasn't this ship grey in colour in Star Trek the Motion Picture? I'm pretty sure the first Klingon ship that started the whole greenish Klingon ship colour was the Bird of Prey from STIII

At last back to star trek Boyd. Whatever happened to the 1/350 reliant conversion build Boyd that build would have looked totally amazing . Will it ever be coming back.

I still have 3D printed parts here for you but i need a few days before i can get them out.

Not at first. Probably later. The idea here is to show how the electronics and speaker for the sounds can fit in the kit supplied base for builders who want to go that way.

I tried and failed to prime and paint using spray cans the TOS 50th Anniversary models. It would gum up and I would lose detail because at times I would have to sand out the areas for instance of where the windows would be. I am okay using brushes but not spray cans of any sort. So I put both kits away and have never touched them again. I don't have the money to buy a compressor and airgun setup

If something like that happens again there is a fairly easy solution for it. Buy some Purple Power. They sell it at Home Depot. It's a heavy duty degreaser but it also works great for stripping paint off of plastic parts. Pour some in a container, drop the parts in and after overnight pull them out and give them a good water rinse. They'll be good as new. Make sure to wear rubber gloves as it is some concentrated stuff to work with.

The Klingons always travel in 3s

@0:59 -- Yeah, the way this model photographed in TMP just does NOT scream olive-green to me. It definitely looks grey here (probably) due to the lighting and possibly the film stock. I kind of prefer the way it was painted and lit for Star Trek 6 to be honest. The TMP paint is kind of drab but perhaps more typical for a standard Klingon fleet ship since the ST6 ship was supposed to be the official Klingon head of state cruiser.

I like the colors of the ST 6 version and the lighted engine nacelles on it look great. On the studio model pictures you can see that it has a ton of intricate brass ornamental details all over it. Sadly alot of it is damaged and broken off now. That's a model that sold at the big Christies auction that nobody really knows where it went as it hasn't been seen since then.

@@TrekWorks That's the problem with these auctions... A bunch of things disappear until the new owners die or decide to resell the items later or trade with another collector. It was only a while ago we all found that Jeff Bezos owns the 8-ft Enterprise model now and that it's sitting in the open at Blue Origin's HQ. I still think it should have had a cosmetic restoration and put in a protective glass case in a museum somewhere. From the retirement photos I've seen of it (on a website that's probably been taken down by now), one of the torpedo bays had puncture damage and the impulse engine grills were broken -- probably from being moved and removed during tours around the country and world. The paint was cracking in multiple places as well as decals chipping. And Bezos still won't let anyone do a cosmetic restoration... I'd rather they kept it marked as the Enterprise-A but at least repair all the damage the touring did and check the structural integrity of the model. It's just barely 14 years younger than the 11-ft model in the Smithsonian and that model was beginning to warp and disintegrate before the last restoration.

@@AvengerII I've been pretty outspoken on that whole subject of the condition the original refit is in. I went as far as getting some of the key artists who built it together with a proposal to Mr. Bezos directly to have it restored by them. There isn't anybody in the world more qualified. It was flatly turned down. He owns it so, his choice. I only hope he understands he doesn't own it eternally and that he is only a custodian of it's care for now. This should be true for all historical artifacts owned by private individuals.
