KLH Model 5 vs Wharfedale LINTON

Ғылым және технология

We compare the Linton Model 5s and the Wharfedale Linton's. Both speakers are a throwback to it's vintage heritage, however, sound quite different. We have found the Lintons quite polarizing among enthusiasts . Some people love them and some people hate it. Audio is quite subjective and don't take our word on it and have a listen to see what suits you better. Please note the Canadian price has changed since filming and we have updated the price below.
Contenders:
MODEL 5 with stands - MSRP: $3750cdn/$3000 usd aprox.
Wharfedale Linton with stands- MSRP $2699.99/$1899 usd aprox.
How we score: We rate the top spot a 5 and base the scores on that reference.
MSRP: MODEL 5 $3750cdn/$3000 usd aprox.
MSRP: Wharfedale Linton $2499.99/$1799 usd aprox.

I might have missed it but did you try the linton's with the tweeters on the inside? manual says the wharfedale logo on the grills should face out... "The speakers should be positioned with treble units inwards, that is with the W badge on the grilles towards the outside."

I would say that the room is a big factor here (well, it always is but you know what I mean). I auditioned both and had to bring the Lintons so far out into the out room to get a good sound but to a degree that just wasn't manageable. The KLH on the other hand hit the sweet spot for my room.

Reposting....Had both. I really don't get how anyone with good associated gear could consider the Lintons an audiophile speaker. They sound rather dull with Class D, tubes and A/B. They do sound vintage and are friendly to weaker recordings. The Model 5's are a fully realized audiophile design packaged to LOOK vintage, but after that they offer greater detail and transparency. It's not really a close battle if you want speakers that offer superior clarity, image and timbre. I really think the lower price point of the Lintons drives a lot of people to (hope) believe that they are in the same league as the Model 5's. I had both paired with Rogue Cronus Magnum III, Nuprime IDA 16, Cambridge EVO150....the Model 5's are hands-down a superior audiophile speaker for anyone planning to build a serious system. The Model 5's are good enough to pair with higher end electronics while the Linton's are less likely to take advantage if you start upgrading. I kept the Model 5's. Other speakers in my systems...Magnepan, Kef, Duevel, Revel, etc.

Asking in regards to mids and hi's as I have dual REL subs for the low end. Looking for less bright/sibilant/edgy speakers as I listen to a lot of classic rock and female vocals via Denafrips Pontus II DAC. Thanks

@@michaelcampbell9459 Properly set up the Model 5's will easily out resolve the Mofi's and Linton's. Those with more moderate power and sources would probably be okay with the Linton's. My Magnepan .7's are superior overall, but can't party the way the Model 5's, which are beautifully balanced and full range. I actually own the Kef R3's and they are fantastic with surprising bass and excellent resolution. The R3's are probably equal to the .7's for musicality and resolution and you might even prefer the imaging. I get a deeper soundstage with the .7's and a lot depends on the room and placement. Not familiar with Elac or Kendalls. If you find ANY good speaker edgy, the problem could also be with your electronics.

Nice! One point missing from your analysis: sub bass. Big plus for the Linton (as show on your own graf) In fact, the Linton go deep (35hhz) and a sub woofer is not needed for many listeners like me. Synergy is very important two. Going for a very detailed DAC do great thing on the Linton because it will not becoming fatiguing and you will ear more sparkles and details. Same with the amp... but I'm biased because I work with focal monitors and when I listen for pleasure I want less analytical sound and more lush and warm sound. The Linton are very good for listening to the songs instead of technical details. That is why I love them so much!

For me so far only the Monitor Audio Silver 500 7G and Tannoy Revolution XT8F, however up to 3500 $ yes sure there gonna be more speakers that would be better than the KLH. Linton's though are a average speaker that can't compete with any of the mentioned here, they sound like 1000 $ speakers at best. They have a large fanbase because they were cheap and a Highseller, so many own those and hence biased, but they are not good speakers, sorry.

If you auditioned the Wharfedale Lintons with the grills off then you didn't get the true representation of it's signature sound. They are meant to be listened and engineered in design with the grills on. If you listened to them with the grills on then the Linton's were optimized for the listening comparison. Many reviewers on other channels actually preferred the Lintons over the KLH's. I also sensed a certain biased review towards the KLH's. This might be because of their brighter or hotter sound character with most music. Room placement with the Linton's should be away from the walls to gain a better musical perspective. Overall though it was an interesting review none the less.

Linton's are the most overrated speaker, they are muddy sounding while the Model 5 are transparent and audiophile. However the TANNOY Revolution XT8F are better than both, they make the Linton's look like a low-res joke speaker - also it was proven that Wharfedale is using cheap internal parts and a cheap crossover. The Linton are very basic Vintage speakers, that don't have the Clarity nor the 3-Dimensional capabilities of the Model Fives, the Linton are worth maybe 500, while the Fives are easily sounding like a 2500 $ speaker. Also as Monitors for Critical listening the Fives are much more analytical. If you find the Fives too harsh in the Treble then there is a Switch at the back of the speaker to turn Treble from "High" to "Medium" or I believe there is even "Low" so you can set it perfectly according to your preference.
