Me too dislike the stands, kind of out of proportion, the vertical posts will look better both moving an inch in inwards while the base and suport remains the same. Now it looks odd as Kristi said, and I describe it as and fat/short look.

Hey Andrew, I bought a pair of these speakers based partly on your review, not because your review was without criticisms (it obviously wasn’t), but because you provided exactly the information I needed in order to make that decision. I was looking for speakers that could do double duty for stereo music and movies, that could play well at low volumes (the majority of my listening), that were not too finicky about placement, and that could be adequately driven (to moderate volumes in a small room) by a 55-60 watt amp. You gave all this info in your review. Even the primary negative - that their main weakness is filling a large room with bass at high volume - was helpful information, because that is not my use-case, so I was able to rule that out as a problem for me. (BTW I got them from your buddies at Just Audio for $1200 a pair including the stands, so that also helped make the decision for me!). So, I want to thank you for your high-quality, engaging, and usefully informative reviews.

I purchased the Model 5s and am very happy. The articulation of music they are capable of is exquisite. The 5s are unlikely to let you fall asleep in your Lazyboy stool, because they reveal the musicality of performances wonderfully. I have yet to put the speaker up to stadium level because of the sheer energy it can put out. Good power will also deliver good tone. Tone or timbres are absolutely spot on on the model 5s. Since the model 3 does the same in smaller spaces, and at lower listening levels, I am sure loads of people will be joyful to have the model 3. If you are a bass head buy a sub, if not, KLHs grow on you. My partner is a heavy metal lover, but she never asks me to play these speakers really loud. The sound is so vivid and the power needed to create a hard rock experience does not require blowing the walls down. The model 5s are fuller than the Linton Heritage, and far more joyous than the KEF LS50 metas because of this voicing. Check these speakers out. They are great

@@TheJohnnyNeat Not needed. I was an opera singer for 15 years and have sung with huge orchestras. I sang operas by Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. Live music sounds like a live volcano, a subterranean fire. The Model 5s capture music, they do not replay it in a melancholic darkened manner where detail is braided to being fuzzy instead of focused. The alive quality of music is the real deal. Many have picked up Lintons based on Andrew and Kristi's recommendation and couldn't be happier. I personally believe they recommended them over the KLH, to protect listeners who, own ear-splitting, and badly recorded rock'n roll. They also still recommend the KLHs and marvel at their lack of fussiness and performance. The KLH Model 5s have been sold out almost continually since their release. I am very pleased to own them.

Great review as always. I picked up Lintons based on your and Christy's agreement and couldn't be happier. You are my favorite reviewer because you focus on value and diminishing returns. No one else just comes out and says its not worth overpaying for certain brands of vintage type speakers when KLH, Wharedale, Magnate, etc. offer such great value. I'm running quite a variety of front end gear ( as2200 (per Christy), denon 4806, Pioneer reference blue ray, Sony ES SACD, denon tt with ortofon black ( per Andrew), Doge 7 dac with telefunken tubes rolled in) and while the lintons always retain their character, different dacs can make them sound more dynamic and detailed. Most of us don't have the opportunity to try a variety of speakers and the info you provided allowed me to save money on speakers AND not feel like I'm missing much by not dropping 2 or 3 times the money for JBL, Klipsch, McCintosh, etc. There are different classes of course, but within similar products among diff brands, more money doesn't automatically equate to better sound. My old speakers were more expensive (at the time) KEF R300's and I still like them but prefer the overall voicing and scale I get with the larger Lintons so I upgraded to less expensive mains

It seems to me, after listening to this review, that the Model 3 might be the "missing link" in a KLH 5.0 setup. I think you had the right idea using the Model 3 as a center channel. Use the Model 5's for L & R mains, and get two more Model 3's for surrounds, and there you have it. No subwoofer needed, as you point out. You guys are doing a great job with these videos. Hope you are enjoying that wonderful new home!

The bass on the Three's actually surprised me and I feel a sub will just help seperate and smooth out the mid to bass imaging (just because of 2 way). It will be an interesting experience. I have a small/mid room and with my current set-up it is fantastic. If a sub makes it better, I will be blown away. I recommmend the Three's to anyone with similar size room. Thanks for enquiring...

I will decide how important Atmos is to me when i make my decision . Normally the tweeter attenuation wouldn't matter to me , but in a small very reflective room it could be the deciding factor as well . Paired with a couple of capable subs for sure as well

My Favorite 2 way (back in the day) was the AR-7. ... While I was in the Service (72-74) my room was filled with several Audio systems. My friend and roommate bought a HUGE Sansui speaker (it was like a 7-way configuration) and he would bother me about how good they were.... so, ONE DAY I disconnected his speakers and put my LITTLE AR-7s on TOP of his Speakers and TURNED THE VOLUME UP. .... When My buddy (Kenny) came to the room I said he was RIGHT as RAIN the Sansui Speakers were GREAT.... and he was GROVING the sound, when I pointed out his Sansui Speakers were disconnected, and he was listening to the 2 Way AR-7. .... I wish I had those speakers today, but HE BEGGED ME TO SELL THEM to him... ....... $71 (the Cost) - it was amazing ....... I REALLY DON'T think the Acoustic Technology are given enough credit for its sound in any of the reviews. I get the feeling that Giving the Technology Credit somehow is demeaning to the younger Generation..... I'm probably wrong, but it is a kind of Prejudice to say something is GREAT and leave the MYSTERY of WHY out of the equation.

Interesting and informative review. I think the idea with the 3’s is not so much a smaller footprint as better integration into a smaller space, as not all of us have medium to large rooms. They are not too far off Dynaco A25’s in size….maybe just a little chunkier looking. Though Dynaco managed to stuff a 10” woofer into their small box.

While speaker shopping, be sure to consider speaker impedance. Especially if using older "vintage" amps the were designed for 8 ohms. I chose the JBL L82's due to their 8 ohm nominal, that only dips to 7 ohms. My Sansui amps would be hurting if they had to drive a 3.7 load. And yes, they sound & look wonderful. It was worth eating ramen noodle soup for 5 months... Oh, and now I have no use for a sub, these really hit the lows well.

If you have Advents that are in good condition with the woofer surrounds intact and the capacitor in the crossover upgraded, save yourself some money. If money is no object or the Advents we’re lost to some calamity, definitely go with the Model 5. I wonder if the Model 3 being a 2-way speaker would be a more direct comparison to the Advent.

Say, with the Model 5's as L&R (or Wharfdale Linton's as L&R) and a Model 3 as Center ... do you believe your sub adds value benefit to the 5's or Wharfedale Linton in your Theater? Cheers, Eric

Hi Andrew and Kristi! Thanks for another always thorough and informative review. I’m wondering how adding a subwoofer to the KLH Model 3 would lighten the load on the power amp and the speakers. Referring to the excellent Marantz 40n, I researched and discovered the 40n only has a lowpass filter on the sub output, unlike a HT receiver which invariably have both high pass and low pass filters. Which means, when driving a pair of speakers and a subwoofer off the Marantz 40n, the main speakers driven by the 40n will receive a full range signal, heavy bass and all, regardless of whether a sub is used or not, meaning the main speakers and amp are pushed equally as hard in either scenario.

Focal did the same thing with their lines Chorus V series vs W series. I have Focal 807Ws also which give greater detail and dynamic punch. Trying to decide if I want to change, larger, smaller, etc., and the KLH presents a different concept for "standmount" especially if it sounds more like a larger speaker without sacrificing tonality. So, interested to hear your findings especially in the areas of tonality, instrument separation and stage depth and at more moderate to low listening levels. Thanks.

  • @nc3419
    @nc34192 жыл бұрын

It's my understanding, at least with the KLH Model 5 and perhaps the Model 3 that the tilt of the stand is absolutely necessary for the speakers to sound as good as they do and placement on a level stand actually degrades the SQ. So, no choice but to use the stands, which isn't bad, it's the design. Now, if you live in an apartment and limit sound pressure to more moderate levels, does the difference between the 5s and 3s diminish? Sure, the Model 5 should improve the mids and lows being a well designed 3 way. But for a two way, it seems at its' price point, it may be a good option particularly if compared to speakers in a range from Focal Chora, Dynaudio Emits and even Monitor Audio Silvers. Any comparisons to those? Given the price difference of about $1600, the SQ between the Model 3 to 5 should be commensurate between the two. Perhaps at lower volumes, the differences are less? Especially if the bass remains tight although less? There's alot of $$$ left over foe a sub, be it used or new, and whether necessary. As to looking odd...look at Klipsch Heresy. Seems about similar, squatty looking and tilted. At the now $2500 price, there alot of competition from Bucchardt among others. At $900, the competition seems pretty slim. Responds better to more powerful amps? What if you only need a few watts and enough headroom so a lower power amp that is well designed could be enough. It may be more a current thing than watts as the two don't always mesh. Hence why a 20 watt amp can outperform a 100 watt amp, more to it than that but essentially the case. Question is, in trying to decipher through all the poetically waxed review (which isn't bad per se), I am trying to denote exactly how these two models are similar, how they are different and where the 3s do not quite keep up with the 5s. It could be the other way around too. So...this review stills leaves me wondering a bit of how to describe or expect those differences/similarities to be and how the 3s could be a better solution given the step up to the 5s.

All in all the Yamaha is a solid amp (you reviewed the 801 awhile back, which is of course similar). Sometimes I’m feeling the need for more bass and maybe a bit of an effortless sound during busier music passages. What would your amp recommendation be in the 2,000ish dollar range based on that? Hi, A & K. Nice review. If I were to pick either, it would be the 3, given my room constraints (small 1-BR apt). One of my first grown-up stereos was the KLH all-in-one w/Garrard turntable. Aesthetics matter to me, too, Andrew, and I thought the KLH systems looked better than anything else out there in 1971. Next I had large Advents in 1978, then a pair of Magneplanar SMGa's. I love watching these reviews from you two! But . . . what about Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, or Led Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy, or Jimi Hendrix Electric Ladyland (especially the new 5.1 mix)? When I was young, I worked in Recording Studios in Los Angeles, where the JBL 4311/4312 (the studio version of the L100) was king at the time. And the amazingly ahead of their time then, JBL 4343 (15" 4-way $17K to $18K a pair today). I know ATC makes their own version today (also the price of a small car). You mention Focal, but why not other studio monitors, like the Dynaudio Core 59, or Hedd or PMC? Or even the Focal Trio 11? I am 67 and I have always wanted to listen to music on the speakers that music was created using. Big 3-ways that don't need a subwoofer. Even my home studio JBL 308s don't need a subwoofer (though we have the matching JBL 310 anyway). So, why not do a studio monitors for the home edition of your show? ATC vs PMC vs JBL vs Focal vs Dynaudio. All 3-ways above 10" woofers. They are not furniture, they are F1 cars for your ears! Just no Genelec, please.

As for the comparison between the 3 with a sub and the model 5 I would tend to disagree. Since the two are so similar I would say the 3's with sub would have the better overall sound, with deeper bass than the 5's, depending on the sub pairing but you can get pretty decent subs for 700 bucks or less. If you aren't deep bass crazy, then yes the Model 5 would make more sense.

@@davidjurney The 5's are worth every penny... You honestly do not even need a subwoofer with these if paired with the right gear. When I went with the Denafrips Ares II DAC, the model 5's came alive. They sounded ok with a delta sigma DAC, but the Ares II R2R Ladder DAC gave me that 60's and 70's sound I was looking for. The addition of the Denafrips Class A Hades pre and Thallo amp took the Model 5's to the next level. Much better sound and incredible bass going from solid state and Class D amplification to Class A, a real game changer. It sounds better by the day...

Personally I'd look to buy the original vintage model 5. Since I have no problem using equalization I feel that speaker is far more desirable than the new models. Its 12 inch acoustic suspension woofer is more than the equal of the new model 5, comparable to AR3, AR3a, and the original larger Advent. I wouldn't buy a ported speaker myself and acoustic suspension speakers are all I shop for. Lucky man that I am I've got a pair of Teledyne AR9s with tw 12 inch side firing woofers in a four way five driver tower. That was AR's best effort.

I have recently owned a vintage set of the KLH 5, its a very good speaker of the era where its better than a Large Advent but is slotted below an AR3. These new retro speakers like the new 5 and Linton are much more musical and dynamic than the vintage models above, they have more in common with modern speakers but are definitely an easy listen like the vintage models. There is something to be said about a traditional wide baffle speaker design that makes them very easy to place in a room.

I purchased a pair in early July; took a few weeks to break in and now they sound amazing. Andrew is correct- you can run these with anything but I noticed a big difference when I switched from an AVR to a pretty stout integrated amp. Enjoy those 3’s!!

Thanks so much Harry, appreciate you watching (it would appear folks' interest in the Model 3 isn't as great as the 5). I agree, the 5s remain the "better" buy all things considered and I, like you, would buy them over the 3s.

This one goes to Kristi. You said you don't like laidback sounding speakers, yet Lintons seem to be exactly that, laid back with a lot info missing from midrange and top end. Could you clarify a bit as knowing what reviewer you follow likes makes it easier to understand reviews and opinions on gear in general? Thanks.

Not sure what to say. I don't consider the Linton to be as you described so I guess it comes down to interpretation and personal preference. While I would not describe them as forward (ie B&W 600 series), they aren't veiled/laid back or what I would consider overly neutral (ELAC). Hope that helps.

So what you are saying, but didn't initially say, is the 3's are for smaller rooms than yours. In a smaller room, their bass won't be trying so hard to fill the room and in a smaller room, the room would limit the bass extension of a model 5 to that of a model 3. Finally, if you compare $ for $ with JBL, the L52 is the Model 3 direct comparison. My guess, is, acoustically, the 3's would trounce e the L52's.

Mike Wazowski? 😂😂 I imagine these would be great in a small room. Maybe KLH should have gone with a traditional bookshelf speaker that keeps the same design. Same grill and walnut color. Then beautiful matching walnut stands. I’d pay $2k for that match.

Dayton Audio has a pair of sealed 6 1/2” speakers with a very, VERY good AMT tweeter. Dayton Audio B-52 Air. I got my pair for $55 last Black Friday. Don’t laugh. They might be the greatest speaker bargain around. Very entertaining!

Andrew, I am looking for some advice.... How integral to the sound are the stands? I was thinking of getting some model 5's but because of my room I would have to use them without the stands with the speakers directly on the floor. However, with these new model 3's, I could use them on their stands. Which do you think would perform better, 5's with no stands or 3's on stands? These would be music only speakers in a 12x18 room at reasonable volume....

I own the 5's, they need the stands. I personally love the stands, they make positioning the speakers very easy and look good. Everyone that has stopped by thinks they look really nice, and "cool". Why could you not use the stands? Wood flooring? If it is a flooring issue and possible scuffs, a trip to Home Depot should easily cure that.
