KLAUS | Character design: Finding Margu

Фильм және анимация

Happy Saami National Day! And what a better way to celebrate it than with everyone’s favorite Saami character, Margu! It was a delight to bring her to life. Get some behind the scenes on how she came to be and some extra footage of Sergio learning about the Saami during his research trip to Norway.
#Klaus now available on #Netflix!
When Jesper distinguishes himself as the postal academy’s worst student, he is stationed on a frozen island above the Arctic Circle, where the feuding locals hardly exchange words let alone letters. Jesper is about to give up when he finds an ally in local teacher Alva, and discovers Klaus, a mysterious carpenter who lives alone in a cabin full of handmade toys. These unlikely friendships return laughter to Smeerensburg, forging a new legacy of generous neighbors, magical lore and stockings hung by the chimney with care. An animated holiday comedy directed by Despicable Me co-creator Sergio Pablos.

    I watched Klaus with my Sami girlfriend, and at one point in a scene with Márgu she started laughing. Apparently, at one point when Klaus is talking to her, she says "You know I don't understand what you're saying, right?" in Sami. It's perfect.

    The whole sequence from her heartfelt conversation with Jesper, writing the letter at Alva's, Jesper trying to build the sled, Jesper and Klaus traveling to deliver the present, and then Margu waking up to find the present melts my heart. And when she gleefully rides the sled and yells yoo-hoo, I always lose it.

    Oh yeah I’d heard the Northuldra were inspired by the Sámi before I watched it so I was rly confused abt the lack of color, since I saw Klaus and these vids first and knew that y’all have really bright reds and blues in your clothing. Did frozen 2 get that wrong or is it like a regional thing? Cos assuming it’s just a thing Disney decided to do it’s kinda sad for me as an artist to see the disappearance of such great colors that are literally right there in the referenced culture :( (If I’m wrong abt it just being a Disney thing I’m very sorry if I offended anyone-this is purely from an artistic standpoint and I’m not trying to speak on behalf of any culture I’m not part of) Complaining aside I’m glad Klaus introduced me to the existence of this culture, it’s really beautiful even tho I don’t know much abt it :))

My drama teacher once said, "The best movies are the ones you can watch on mute, without subtitles, and still know what's happening." Well done, guys! The reason that makes me a little nervous is that today, when one uses the word "indigenous", it seems that it does so only to indicate non-whites or so-called minorities; as if whites had no right to claim their homeland. Now it is clear that this is found in the Sami, as they are of the white race no less than their Norman neighbors, therefore it seems foolish to me to assume that ONLY they are indigenous Europeans, and what are the others?

  • @DidixGil

    @DidixGil

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@marziobergagna4885 Ooh, I see. I guess we see "indigenous" differently. "Indigenous" to me and to most indigenous peoples I interact with is more than just claiming one's original homeland (although that is VERY important too), but the specific way in which one group interacts with said land. So a myriad of things: a primal connection with Nature (which all human beings used to have, but most lost in the way), nomad/semi-nomad lifestyle, living in a close tribal-like community, a common history of forcebly assimilating and having to forsaken their own culture & identity, and even body paintings (found in America, Polynesi, Afrika and Asia - the Okinawans) can be associated with being Indigenous. So it's more than just the textbook definition, it's a life philosophy! :) We (I mean myself and the people I know) usually refer to as Indigenous peoples: the original peoples of América - Abya Yala, Turtle Island, Australia, New Zealand, Polynesia, specific hunter-gatherer ethnic groups of Afrika, aswell as the Inuit from Alaska and Canada, the Okinawans and the Ainu from Asia, and yes, the Sami from North Europe. Whenever there's a Global Indigenous Peoples Meeting of some form, you can usually see Sami people present - the only European natives. That means that Indigenous peoples worldwide have a connection to the Sami in a way they don't have to any other European groups - except maybe for the Romani people who, again, have a history of similar lifestyles and ideals, and the Druids of the ancient Celts, for obvious similarities.

    Jesper listen son, lying to your friends, ok. Tricking all those kids to write letters. Fine. But making that little girl cry? Unforgivable.

    Not Sámi, just a American dude. But love the film, simply because the inclusion of Sámi, Margu was my favorite character. I recognized her gakti and hat immediately.

    I really hope like the movie Elf, this movie also naturally becomes common Christmas movies to watch as it was SO good, on every level of story telling, technical animation, and style.

    I learned something very important in my years travelling abroad. Never ask a woman her age. Never ask a man how much he spent on his hobby. Never ask a sámi how many reindeer are in his or her herd.
