Kite Aerial Photography Rig

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Not everyone has the thumb coordination to fly a quad copter, and few have a pilot buddy who can carry them skyward, but just about anyone can fly a kite. The hobby of Kite Aerial Photography (KAP) has been given a new wind with the advent of affordable, light-weight action cameras and advanced remote-controlled devices. Even though it’s been over a hundred years since George Lawrence took his famous panorama of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake, the kite is still the simplest way to get a lofted perspective for your photography.
This kite originally appeared in a Make: Magazine online tutorial. If you want more information about how it was built, you can visit the tutorial here: makezine.com/projects/build-ki...

In the past, I replaced a kites line with fishing line, and just used a fishing pole to control the kite. Was much easier to reel in and out.

Seriously... learning to sew was one of the best life skills I ever decided on learning. A soldering iron is good for staying fraying too!

Quote - " i'm not a kite builder" Oh yes you are, you have successfully built a kite that flys as intended, hence your a kite builder ! You have demonstrated that you have an understanding of what is required to build kites, e.g. maintaining the proportions when scaling up, making sure the kite is perfectly symetrical etc. get a good kite book to perfect your techniques and you'll be able to create the perfect lifting system for your camera rig.

Hand stitching the whole kite? Good effort!! A long fuzzy tail will help settle the kite down too.

There are way better alternatives than hand stitching a kite. Back in the Mid-90's we were making "No Sew" kites with rip-stop nylon and fabric tape. When ironed this tape is stronger than any sewn seam because there are no perforations in the sail.

I can't believe that the kite didn't work perfectly right from the start with the exceptional cat-gineer consulting that you had.

I love how you play with the cat first to get it out of the way, and when it does not you just go "ah.." and pick it up xd

For more stable aerial photography you should build a large helium balloon rig. I got some great pics of our farm with ~90cm diameter balloon. If you attach it to a fishing rod you can let it go really high and real it in quickly.

Have you thought of building a high altitude balloon? It's been on my mind for a while. The project would combine your knowledge of physics and micro processing. The videos from these amateur projects are spectacular!

@@PracticalEngineeringChannel KZread channel { Flight Test } built a dirigible and used RC Plane parts to maneuver it kinda. I figure making a frame to fill with helium ballons and electronics from a medium sized inexpensive quad copter/drone to propel and steer it would provide a more stable video platform. It would also get around alot of the FAA's drone rules as it would be tethered and not intened to travel very far. Common sense should keep you from putting up in the area of an airport.

Very cool, Grady! We must have similar minds because I've been thinking about trying this with a cheap camera and using a PIC to trigger it to take pictures. I have several kites from when I used to fly them all the time. I admire you're willingness to build yours, though!

Hey, KZread suggested this video because I did a few Kite aerial photography videos so I watched it. Best few minutes I have watched in ages, not for the content (which was great anyway), but for the commentary, excellent, love your style 😍👍

if you can take the fray off the edged of your nylon fabric with a lighter, might you not do joining and seams with a heat gun?

Dude, just glue some garbage bag with tape, result will be 80% the same, although it does look cheesy. Does not rip, you can re-skin it in an hour tops.
