ThAnk you Mr. Godinez for posting this amazing video. Without having seen it, I would have never felt comfortable cracking this thing open, let alone feel like I could actually fix it. After I viewed it, I gathered up the recommended tools and got to work. 5 minutes later I was digging out the scraps of fondant that got smeared and stuck up inside the unit, cleaned it up, and put it back together and it works just fine. You save me having to purchase an entirely new pasta set, which is what i would have probably done,, whenever I could afford it that is. Thank you SOO much!!!

Yours was the best of all the videos that I watched. To 'pay it back', I'll share how i got my 'handful of bolts and pieces' put back together. It took about 30 minutes to figure it out and get it back together. My bolts and sleeves were not lubed, but the eccentric shaft was lubed. A thin layer of food grade silicone grease was applied while all the parts were laid out. You need to put the bolts through the holes in the end piece and then slide the sleeves over them. The two rollers with their gears are in the other end piece. Stand the end piece with the rollers on its end so that the rollers are pointed up in the air. Now, very carefully, place the other end piece over the rollers and let the bolts hang down; the sleeves will fall off the end, but not fully separate. Raise the sleeve and put the end of the bolt on the lower end piece, but do not worry about getting the bolt in the lower hole. Working from one end (small end cover) to the other, insert the first end cover tabs into the lower end piece. Make sure that the hanging bolts are more or less in the right position. Raise the upper end piece just enough to start the end cover tabs into the upper end piece. Now you add the roller scraper nearest the end cover that you just put in. Put the tabs into the lower end piece and then tilt and minimally raise the top end piece so that you can get the tabs started in the upper end piece. Now do the same with the 2nd roller scraper and then the 2nd small end cover. Once you have all the pieces started in place, press the end pieces towards each other to more fully insert the tabs into the end pieces. You may need to tap it very gently with a small hammer to more fully seat the tabs. Do not worry about the bolts, but do NOT turn the unit upside down and allow the bolts to slide out. Once you have the unit pushed together, more or less, lay it down flat on your work surface. Take the first bolt by the head and move it to where you can see the end face of the threaded end through the bolt hole on the receiver end piece. If you have a small screwdriver, when you get the threaded end face in front of the hole, push the screwdriver into the hole to pin the bolt and use the screwdriver to maneuver the bolt into the hole. As soon as you get the bolt through, put a nut on the bolt and tighten it finger tight. Do the same for the other three bolts, and then tighten all four bolts snuggly with a wrench, and then go back and tighten them up very tight. Make sure that both rollers turn freely by hand and then put on the end cover plates and the thickness adjustment knob.

Just did this on mine. I stood the whole thing up on end with the gears facing up. First I fit the rollers in their holes (top and bottom). Then I inserted the bottoms of the copper scrapers and bottoms of the chrome outer pieces into the bottom end piece. Then I held the hollow tubes inside the chrome outer pieces and slide the long bolts down from the top end piece next to the gears. Then I aligned the four upper tabs from the two copper scrapers and two chrome outer pieces all at once and pressed the top end piece down while making sure the ends of the long bolts came out the bottom end piece. With ten fingers available it still wasn't easy! Once everything slid around a bit and snapped into place then I held the two ends while gently flipping the whole thing on its side to put the 10mm end nuts on the bolts. It helped to use a thin screwdriver to nudge the pieces around a bit so all the tabs would be in their slots. Have fun!

Great video - like others “figuring out how to hold all the parts in alignment--bolts with sleeves, roller scrapers and metal cowling. each into their own slots on either side--while putting it back together ” tried multiple times ... unsuccessful ... might help if you did a dedicated video showing the secrets how you did it.

Absolutely Kitchen Aide might consider a redesign of the 3 units to allow for really complete cleaning of the rollers, the fettucine cutter (especially) needs to be REALLY clean. I took mine apart and found really small dried bits..which i removed. But your video is great.

Yo - great vid. Getting the dust cover off the thickness knob is the crux to this assembly. I opted to tap the cam rod out of the roller from the opposite side with a punch. Gently tapping the cam off the roller works but the dust cap still needs to come off to facilitate reassembly. My cam rod was totally suede and covered with oxidation. I cleaned the rod with a scotch rite pad and some baking soda. Spinning freely now. Thanks for the video - good to see

Hi Joshua, Thanks for your post which is very detailed and helpful. Was reticent to use hammer and screwdriver on the adjustment knob, so tried to use a suction cup, a large valve lapper tool, which I bought for 8$ at Canadian tire! It worked and it was very easy to pull the knob cover out! My little contribution to your wonderful job!

At 6:34 removing the Knob Cap: You can also do it with a suction cup or a paper clip. Paper Clip: When you pull the knob, look at the back... you can see a lot of small rectangle slots used to set the thickness. With an L shaped paper clip just introduce de clip and pop the Cap. Almost no force needed and no damage done. (The introduced part should be a little longer than the knob height) Thanks for the video, this thing should be serviceable it's gross the amount of pasta accumulated and "leaking" from time to time to the new one.

KNOB CAP REMOVAL- First thanks for your video, it helped to see why I wasn't getting anywhere, disassembling the other side. With regard to the knob cap, I can now see that we should be able to take this apart periodically to clean and re-lubrication the shaft and gears, and the cap SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE SERVICEABLE...what I did was to drill two holes in the cap, near the edge of the cap, 180 degrees across from each other, and just used a couple of hook picks I had from Harbor Freight, to pull the cap off evenly. The holes only need to be between 1/16" - 1/8" in size, just large enough to hook the picks into. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR, use a center-punch or a nail-set with a point on it, to punch a dimple into the cap where you want to drill the holes, since you're drilling into chrome, it makes keeping the drill bit in place when you first start drilling, a lot easier. With a little care you won't damage the cap, and the two holes you drill will look "factory made", which is the way the cap should have been made anyway.

Just for completeness, I found that if you push on the round metal end opposite the knob, the entire rod to which the knob is attached will come out. Just push on it with a screw driver. It isn’t threaded but can get badly corroded over time. The knob/spring assembly won’t come apart, (except as you’ve indicated), but I really don’t think that there is much to be gained by doing it this way. Great video, btw! Thanks, Doug

I was super excited to try out your suggestion, but it didn't work for me. Maybe we have different models? My assembly with knob screws into the end and the rods are screwed into that assembly area. There are 2 screws and 2 rods and 2 rollers. Yes, I can get the rods out, but to get into the knob assembly area in order to unrust and grease it up, the only option I see is to remove the cap in order to remove the knob and then unscrew the cover that is over the knob end. I'm happy to watch a video if you post one about what you mean.

@@joshuagodinez5867 the rod seems to get almost welded (d/t corrosion) to the opposing plate. It’s an eccentric cam that actually moves t he rollers together/apart. @@nitrousman8882 Hm. I took off the end cap opposite the knob and the round metal end opposite the knob appears to be the end of the roller and even if I pushed that by loosening the cap with the knob I'd still have the roller attached to the knob assembly so I wouldn't be able to get the knob assembly off without removing the screw directly beneath the cap. Maybe I'll take it all apart again this weekend to verify. I'll post back if the cam is inside the roller and able to separate from it. If it's part of the roller then I don't see how the knob would come off. It's been too long to figure it out without taking it apart, but I did that before so I'm not a-feared.

@@nitrousman8882 Well, I'm sitting here with my pasta roller caps off (after removing the knob through the cap) and I can't even remove the rollers without unscrewing the nuts. So, even if I just wanted to remove the rollers to clean them or something I'd still need to remove the knob cap, unscrew the nuts, and then I'd have enough tension release to remove the rollers. My assembly doesn't seem to work any other way. I even banged on the end with the ends off and I still wouldn't be able to remove the roller because the end assembly is held down by the nuts and that keeps the roller from moving out from between the ends. For me, removing the end cap and the nuts is the only way to remove the rollers.

Hi Joshua, at the start your video was very helpfull, but as parts were coming off, it appeared that KitchenAid (KA) has done some changes over time. As for my version the scrapers are static plates locked in slids in the inner coverplates and the gearwheels are threaded on the inside so the lockingring is not needed. When desired I can send some pictures of the different version.

I found that the roller is much harder to turn than the pasta cutter, is this a sign of misbehavior/lack of lubrication for the roller?

  • @joshuagodinez5867

    @joshuagodinez5867

    2 жыл бұрын

Probably, yes. Mine was hard to turn because I had submerged it in water and it became rusted and difficult to turn requiring me to come up with this process to take it apart, unrust it, lubricate it, and put it back together. It may be hard to turn if there is old pasta in the roller. You can put a little mineral oil (sold in health stores and pharmacies) at the junction of the roller and the body of the device to lubricate it there. You can also run some bread through the roller to try to lift out the pasta stuck to the roller. Try the easy things first, and only resort to the most difficult thing if all else fails.

Nice detail, by far the most useful, but in the end it didn't help me. My rollers were never immersed in water, no rust. They simply had crumbs of dough inside that rattled around and I couldn't get them out any other way. Cleaned the rollers, no need to remove gears. I didn't photograph, but think I understand how it goes back together. The problem is I can't for the life of me figure out how to hold all the parts in alignment--bolts with sleeves, roller scrapers and metal cowling. each into their own slots on either side--while putting it back together. But you skipped right over that part! Apparently it was easy for you. One hint from the video is maybe filling the tubes with the grease to keep them from sliding off the bolts. I'll look for the grease, but am not sure how helpful that would be. I thought about getting longer bolts to temporarily line up the sleeves with the holes while lining up the cowling and scraper tabs with their slots, but that would be an awful hassle, more stuff to buy and never use again. Wouldn't have to be the right size bolts, maybe threaded rod (which would have to be cut to a useful length, more hassle) then replaced, one at a time, with the right bolt. But you evidently found an easier way. If you search "pasta roller reassembly" and go to the KItchen Aid hit, all it tells you is how to remove and attach the rollers from the machine. Whoopie!

Just to be clear ziqfriq, the grease in the sleeves was to combat rust, not to hold them in place. Sorry if I was unclear on that point. And it wasn't easy for me to put it together. It took me awhile, but there was no special method, just trial and error and I eventually figured it out. Glad you found a reference. I'll go look it up. Thanks!
