Kitchen Nightmares | Self Build Camper Van Conversion For Dummies Part 4

Kitchen Nightmares | Self Build Camper Van Conversion For Dummies Part 4
In this van build video, we attempt to build our kitchen frame with a number of mistakes along the way. This turned out to be the hardest part of the DIY camper van build so far. We needed a space for our fridge, gas, and hob and made the hard decision to not have a sink. The build should come along quickly now that we have the kitchen frame and vanlife is on the horrizon.

Stay with your collapsable sink idea. So much storage space gets filled up with plumbing with a built in. Half the people on the planet live happily with just a wash bowl. On a rainy day you can put the bowl full off dishes outside and let the British liquid sunshine do the job 💦🤣. Fantastic work, love your laugh.

Great kitchen build! We have built several camper vans. Every time we decide we need a sink we end up using it for water bottle storage or dog bowl storage! Our most recent build we have installed 2 burner cook top but no sink. Our water is dispensed in wetbath and the dog bowl stays on shower floor so it will not get the rest of the van wet if it should tip over. I have a collapsable dish pan/sink for doing dishes. Glad to see other people think a sink is a waste of counter space! Great job!

Never used the sink and never used the hob in our T5.1, The one i am building now has 2 stainless mixing bowls that fit inside each other one for us one for the Spaniel they are held to a metal plate atop the work surface by a magnet, and as we only use the water for moka pot coffees teeth brushing and dog, the tap is fed from 5litre water bottle, refill it till the handle snaps then recyle and buy a new one for 85p instead of having to waste gallons of water and add cleaning chemicals rinsing manky tanks, Tip for your joinery instead of using 50mm square timber get 50x25 then you can effectively make half lap joints instead of using brackets. Also thank you for your efforts making the videos , they make us smile, Ed

You both are real legends, but you must keep some things in mind: Fix the gas properly with straps inside the kitchen box while driving, because in an accident or a brake maneuvre it might become a killing big blue bullet flying through the interiour. Next is, you have to care for a good air circulation behind the fridge because it generates warmth while it is working. As far as i know. So: Put solid straps and cut holes in it!!! Good decision: No sink! Most of the time you will wash the wishes outside...

We don't have a sink either, I use a spray bottle with lemon essential oil dripped into some salt to help it diffuse into the water and paper towel, if you clean up straight away it's easy. Do you have a ridge monkey? Essential! Lol I hate cooking! I have a tiny kitchen with just enough space for the double hob I use a bit of Duane's desk for counter space and it works fine you don't spend much time cooking anyway Oh no!! We really felt for you! Don't worry everyone has a measuring disaster x good job fixing it! 👏 You've done an amazing job!

Hi Beans So much enjoyed watching your travels, I can relate with your van conversation I have been working on my van, no windows eventually I'll get that done, don't seem to have the time working full-time, soon to retire, next year. We get out as much as possible with a bed, rudimentary kitchen and toilet! I live in Queensland lots of places to visit in our second hand van, it's basic but we enjoy hitting the road, gets hot, no A/C. We don't use pay sites, free camping, cold showers and cooking, eating under the stars. Keep making your great, entertaining videos. Gordon

To sink or not to sink, that is the question. I motorcycle tour here in France & use camping municipals. Washing up facilities are on site alongside toilet & showers. Off grid camping, lay-by's, fields forest etc it's gonna be water bottle & bowl unless you want to go built in sink, water tank, pump, plumbing, waste pipe, grey tank, even water heater. Kinging-it's "Custard" has all the bells & whistles but she weighs in at 4.5 tonnes and they can load her up to 7.5 tonnes.

Ho ho, I just spent most of today dismantling and rebuilding the storage space under my van bed. I found 2 draws in the back shed that would fit... well ...after moving a divider. This entailed some interesting contortions to remove and then rescrew in the panel. I seem to specialize in rebuilds. Nice to see others have the same small hiccups. (Also as I'm recycling everything seems to need modifications.) And yes I will have a kitchen sink and grey tank as these are requirements in NZ, along with a toilet to have more freedom choices.

Gas cylinder should be on floor so that gas can escape directly outside and not hanging around the drawer. Also it's a good idea to have a sink to wash up in and for the odd face wash/ shave, also people would be looking for a sink when you come to resell.

Gas tank the floor so gas doesn’t pool in space beneath. Secure gas tank so it doesn’t knock about or get punctured when van’s moving. For sink replacement use a collapsible bowl & 2 spray bottles for dish washing (1 with soap & water & 1 a little bigger with just water).

The best compromise if you don't want a sink, is a funnel [ canning or oil funnel that has a wider nozzle with mesh to catch solid debry which you can wipe off] and just drill the hole in the counter so it can drain into a 1-2 gal jug. You have a place to spit in when you brush your teeth 😬 and to drain your washing up basin, etc. You can even sink it into the counter and cover it if you want go get fancy, but it doesn't take up much space. Two collapsible washing up tubs [ one 4 sponge baths and hair washing, and one for dishes and washing fruits and vehicles] actually a collapsible collapsible set inside the 1st tub is great 4 dishes and veggies as it's a strainer/dish Rack all in one. I don't submerge my dishes anyway. 🙃

Brilliant 😂 and well done. You did it! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 If I was doing a build, it would be really basic. I am a bushcrafter at heart so my van would be basically a very comfy bed on wheels, with storage to put things like my firebox, cutlery and pots, knives, axes and saws etc away, and a small library. I’d defo have a small compost bucket thingy with a seat so I could stay at sites that insist on visitors being self-contained. There would be a space to cook, but I’d use the stuff I normally camp with, and I would have a small fridge. I would also have storage spices, foraged foods and dehydrated foods. I’d probably sit outside for most of the time, even when it’s raining as I have tarps etc... having a van would basically mean I wouldn’t have to lug my bushcraft gear in a rucksack. I could just go for short hikes with a much smaller backpack and snacks for the afternoon.... well, I can but dream 😊 I don’t even have a driving license soooo... but it’s great to see you guys, your process and adventures 👍🏼 thanks for sharing x
