How good they were indeed! Very scary; good casting; stellar artists; nice gothic atmosphere... but( although I am a true Hammer fan- even searched for some locations) I always laugh a bit with the nice sunny weather in some pics and the lightning flashes and thunder rolling in the distance... but yeah, the atmosphere was there.

These type of films gave me some awful nightmares when I was a kid . Especially the Cushing / Lee combination . The late movies back in the late 60's and early 70's was one of the best memories of growing up . TV in my area at the time had only 2 channels and there was no 24 hour broadcasting at all .

Attention to detail is what sets these Hammer movies apart. For example, when Gerald knocks on the door of the Hotel and an anguished voice calls out, "Why can't you leave us alone?" (I paraphrase). This hints at something sinister and reinforces the mood set in the opening funeral scene. This is how to create a great gothic horror film. Take a lesson modern Hollywood. Subtlety beats Cliché every time.

The miming is thus convincing ...

Typical Hammer movie: lush vivid color, superb cinema photography, intense and incomparable music of James Bernard that heightens tension, superb attention to detail, and above all, true to life story based on the factual rather than the implausible old wives tales. For a period of time people pretty much stopped believing in such things vampires and ghouls that suck your life essence out, but then they started to believe again. After all, who doesn’t believe in them today? We only have to turn on the nightly news to see them in all their hideous and loathsome glory as they run amok dismantling and toppling and destroying all that they do not hold dear.

The "lush vivid color" is because they used 72mm film (the HD of its day) instead of the much cheaper 35mm film Hollywood typically used. Of course you need such lush vivid color to do a proper Vampire movie. Today's vampires only need nightly news visual quality to see all you need of their hideous and loathsome dull glory.

@@lostcat9lives322 I certainly did, Ollie. Talk about dumb! But that’s because the only chick I’ve spent any time with in the past twenty years has been a cold-hearted gal from the frigid side of the street who refuses to get down to any hanky-panic with me. Not that I let that stop me. I just take her out of the freezer long enough for a quick thaw and when I’m done I put her back. Sometimes I have to shift her over to make room for the veggies and the Eskimo Pies.

According to Sarah Miles' memoirs, Barry Warren (who plays vampire son, Carl Ravna), underwent a sex change operation and lived for five years as Claire Warren before her death in 1994. This is a very entertaining movie.

I've just watched this film 5 times in the last couple weeks. The Shout Factory Blu-Ray has 2 different ratio aspects (1:85 and 1:65), plus, the bizarre 1966 TV version "Kiss Of Evil" where almost every reference to vsmpires was surgically removed from the film, with an entirely extraneous NEW sub-plot added. And all 3 versions have their own separate audio commentary tracks! The disc has only ONE real defect (as do ALL Shout Factory Blu-Rays)... if you hit "stop", it INSTANTLY goes back to the beginnng, before the menu, so you can't take long breaks in the middle without using the chapter breaks to find where you left off. (The company needs to be INUNDATED with complaints from buyers about this... as does Universal and Disney. To date, they're the only 3 outfits I've seen this "disc authoring" problem on.)

I really enjoy this and all the other Hammer horror films. I remember in this movie, there were 2 different endings. The ending I just watched and another ending where after Ravner and his followers were destroyed, the townspeople were out in the streets walking around, laughing, talking and glad things were back to normal. Tania's parents were played by different characters. The woman who played her mother was an American actress named Virginia Gregg. The movie ended with Tania's second set of parents playing a music box to the theme Karl played for Marianne. I believe the parents tossed that music box in the fireplace and watched it burn. Then the movie ended. I liked that ending better than this ending.
