Well we have witnessed / heard backing tracks being used to enhance the so-called 'live' experience. We have had confirmation that certain live albums have been 'tinkered' with in the studio and we have bands touring without any original members. We have been duped for years so Avatars are the next logical step in the evolution of removing pure live performance. As someone of a similar vintage to Michael i console myself with the horde of memories i have of being 'there' when the great legendary bands of yore bestrode our planet and PLAYED their instruments and SUNG live.

Kiss was a band that had a totally unique sound and look,........45 years ago! In high school and in the 70's I had all their albums and saw them many times from the beginning up until the time Ace and Peter left. I haven't bought even 1 album since,....or given them the time of day. They have become a joke to me,...and their reputation ruined by the excessive greed and money grab,....and ENDLESS final tours.

The 1978 solo albums epitomized their greed. A quadruple album masquerading as an artistic solo project. Maybe the Beatles, the original Who, or Crosby, Stills and Nash, groups whose members have all released solo albums at one time or another, could have conjured up a project like this on artistic grounds that was worth pursuing. But not Kiss. When the Kiss Army went AWOL after their disco hit, they should never have gone back.

The only way maybe this would work for me, is when they would drop the superhero avatars, and would create the original line-up performing on the Alive II stage, or even earlier. So that fans that were too young in 1977 can experience that show. For a fee that you pay when you go see a movie, certainly not the ticketprices we have to pay for a live show nowadays. But if it’s going to be cyber superheroes and all that.. maybe they SHOULD call the band Piss…

This seems to be the only way it might have some value. Instead of just a generic KISS show, like you said, a recreation of 1975 show. Or even other iconic shows. Maybe relive a Monterrey Pop Festival set through VR or something, or a Woodstock set of a certain band.

+ @chrisvanuden I was thinking the same thing, like what can we do for posterity. Only way it can have value. A live movie of sorts. But it can only work if fans who remember them between 70s-2000s circa can pay to experience what other actually witnessed LIVE (As a Mac fan, i would pay the money to see Rumors Era FM live with all its energy, antics and fashion, or Tusk period fashion and energy live, and Mirage period. Sadly, no Tango because there is no Lindsey live.). But as us fans of Rock die off, who among Gen Z and after will want to go see the Avatars if they don't listen or been exposed to that music of those bands, and those bands are not getting any attention and airplay? It will go out of business eventually if the Avatar Bands are not marketable.

I actually find this distressing. However, with the decline of the music industry as we knew it, this becomes simply one more permutation designed to market a product and separate the less discriminating customers from their cash. My feeling is that when a band succumbs to this temptation, their legacy is tarnished. I don't wish that on any icons we knew and loved. And I'm profoundly disappointed in musical performers who allow this to occur. (I guess...they are just short of spending money?...)

Michael I've been a Kiss fan for a very long time. But I'm a fan who liked what Ace Frehley brought to the band. My saying is Ace is the only true 'rockstar' in Kiss. The failure of the 'Avatar Kiss' is simple. And all you need to do is study how ABBA approached this style of entertainment. ABBA focused on what's seen as 'classic ABBA' the band in their prime, the ABBA we all want to see. Unfortunately Kiss have produced an 'Avatar Band' that's devoid of the classic Kiss era we all want to see. If the new show was set as Kiss in the 1975 to 1977 era and was a faithful reproduction of the primal Kiss energy at that time i'm pretty certain it would be very popular. BUT, and it's a huge BUT because Paul & Gene have successfully snubbed Ace & Peter during the EOTR tour the chances of Ace & Peter surrendering themselves to be 'Avatared' (new word) is basically zero. Gene would fully understand how much money Ace & Peter can bring to the vault. That was proven in the 96 / 97 tour. Were still waiting for Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer to pen some new Kiss classics. To me that really exposes their weaknesses in Kiss as a band. But then again they were just paid stooges who were reliable and just always said YES.

@leokimvideo Great point !!! Those two guys sound like the two guitarists who replaced LB in Fleetwood Mac. In the end, became paid stooges who were reliable just for a tour, making the band a cover band of sorts, and they were either unable or unwilling to make new music and create new classics with the rest of the Classic line up. Didn't want the hassle and felt no chemistry, or the footsteps of Lindsey too hard to follow.

There are a couple of takeaways from this. One being that of course this is just more greed that exposes KISS is a business and not a band, which we already knew. The other is that if bands like them keep doing this, it could even further destroy the following generations. They already can barely get played on radio, because stations won't give up on playing stuff from the 70s-90s, but now the concert stages may never open up for them either. We can't move on if the past never fades away.

Hey Michael. Allow me to start off by saying I haven't been on top of a mountain somewhere but I'm surrounded by them where I live in Pennsylvania. I don't know what the Avatar version of Kiss is. Ok...that said, right before Covid hit, I saw a "Live" performance by Frank Zappa. This was in 2019. The technology existed where a very realistic looking Frank Zappa gave a fabulous performance. Frank's live image had to remain between two electronic projecting posts. All the other band members were live performers who actually performed with Frank in the past. Ahmet Zappa was one of the players. For some of those shows, Steve Vai played guitar live and in person also. There was a fabulous light show that was included with the performance. I have to say that a good time was had by all. Now, Frank was way ahead of his time and he recorded those performances when he was alive for just that kind of show in mind. So...Michael, would you be interested in a show like that with ohhh, lets say Kiss or Led Zeppelin? How about...dare I say...Elvis riding onto a stage in his cadillac then performong his Vegas act? Incidentally, also before Covid, there was a show by Ronnie James Dio planned in that exact vein. I don't believe that grand piece of entertainment ever came to fruition. My guess is that a show like that would work best with a solo artist like Dio, Elvis or Yoko Ono. Who would ever miss a show by Ms. Ono shrieking away in her prime?

It is what it is. Kiss stopped doing concerts in 1976. That's when they started doing shows. They're two totally different things. A Kiss show really is the circus coming to town. I've seen Kiss 7 times over the years. It's a magnificent show; almost the same ting every time. And that's great. It's A/V comfort food. When I saw Kiss announcing avatars, I laughed. "Of course!", I chuckled. Will I see this version? If the price is low enough? Sure. It's basically the Kiss Pyro and light crew going on tour. Good on 'em for keeping them employed. Lastly, Elvis did go on tour about 20 years ago. It was the band, backup singers, the crew, and video of him from Hawaii. A spotlight showed where he would have been onstage and, if you weren't in the first 10 rows, you wouldn't have known Elvis wasn't actually there.

Heres the deal. When you see a live show with your favorite performers whether it be Led Zeppelin, KISS, Van Halen, etc, they are giving you live energy. You in turn thankful for this live energy, give energy back to the people on stage in the form of cheering, standing up, whistling, lighters on, etc. They give energy to you, you cheer them on thankful for the show. They hear you cheer for them and hopefully they turn up the energy for you, the live crowd. Its synergetic, symbiotic. The energy goes in a live loop. Having avatars or holograms on stage breaks this energy loop. Because there is no one on stage to cheer for. You are basically seeing an exhibit. A movie. Now you can go to a museum and see the KISS exhibit. 4 holograms standing there, maybe strumming their guitars. That would be interesting. But you watch for a few minutes, then move on to the next part of the exhibit. A good era for the KISS live show? You would need a time machine. Late 1970s when they were on top of the world, and the tour where they put thier makeup back on in the (kiss) 'The Alive/Worldwide Tour' in 1996-7. No one could believe that KISS was back touring with Ace and Peter. People in lines were with their kids showing them what a real rock experience was like. The lights went out, then the best band in the land announcement, then ACE comes out with his guitar. The energy went nuts. Everyone was reliving their youth. Energy flowing from the performers on stage to the audience and back again. This avatar deal is hubris. Its overreach self importance. No one is going to see an avatar show. The energy will be totally off. No one is going to cheer holograms. The people that do go will sit there like a movie knowing no one is really up on stage. I saw KISS about 10 times live and also saw thier 1996 reunion show where they put the makeup back on. It was amazing. They retired, and as far as I'm concerned, that's it for me too.

Im guessing a lot of the comments here are from the US? Here in the UK we've had the Abba Voyage tour playing here regularly for a year or so now, using the same technology. It sells out every show. The tech involved isnt a hologram but projects onto a weird screen on the stage and the members look real, interact real and the vocal tracks go to a live band playing to the side of them. Its a massive show and there are people who go again and again, and I think this is what Kiss are going for. The clip on saturday was film projected onto an ordinary screen so doesnt show it off. So it could be an interesting show, but I dont see a live band playing with the vocals?? So who knows? We find out when we get there. But if its like Abba it sells, look it up on youtube.,

I have no problem with KISS doing this. They were always more specticle than a real band. The fact they haven't recorded anything in two decades but were still performing all this time is testament to that. As for Peter and Ace, they left the band a long time ago. Tommy and the other guy have put up with Gene and Paul longer than anyone else so they deserve their time in the spotlight. I think it's the right decision. Everyone has gotten so creaky and old, in 2024 and beyond, I'd rather see their avatars.

A Disney ride is an accurate analogy. KISS has obviously done their marketing research to the extent of where and who the KISS brand will go and appeal to in the future. KISS should ask for their money back on that one. The Dec. 2nd MSG show was good at face-value, and to be honest my 60 year-old self was on the edge of my seat when KISS disappeared into the 'mists of time' at the end of Rock and Roll Al Nite. It was so anticlimactic when 'the new era' reveal was nothing more than a glorified video game, what a slap in the face for lifelong fans. Something real KISS believers will NEVER pay good money to see.

They just happen to have the only surviving member. I have seen them twice and both times they put on a great show! Paul Bielatowicz is an incredible guitarist and showman. They have technology that makes his guitar sound just like Keith's organ. And Paul plays Keith's parts excellently! I never left the show feeling cheated. Paul is my favorite living guitar player! It features a video of Johnny with a guitarist who played with him at some point (don't know when, certainly not the Tennessee Two or Three) and a bunch of session folks. So, nobody. My gf loves Cash. I'm a fan of his early rockabilly days being an upright bassist. We're like: no. Its at a huge venue that will be expensive. If it was the Elvis TCB Band, which still has many original members, that might be something, but otherwise - its a joke. I am fine with this "New Era" KISS is the best band that can pull this off. Remember the comic book? It is a show and KISS has delivered that and you can't argue that. They are like cartoon characters so its perfect its a smart move for the future of the "brand". Seems like every one forgot Beatle-mania that toured and did a reenactment of the Beatles show. One thing that at least I have not heard is that Gene or Paul have not brought up or given props to the other members of KISS. Ace & Peter get their credit as they should but what about Eric "The Fox" Carr or Vinnie Vincent, Bruce Kulick or Mark St. John. Now I might of missed it but was there was not any recognition for their contributions over the years? Anyway sorry went off topic. As for this New Era....and speaking as a KISS fan for the last 46 years I say lets see what you got it could be very cool and ground breaking in the future of music/bands after they are gone or yes very cheesy Disney style. We shall see but as I said KISS is the perfect band to do this at this moment. Oh and BTW the two hosts they had for the PPV live show from MSG were awful, fake, out of touch and had the worst questions and cheesy as hell. Who the heck hired them? LOL

Whose to really say? Every fan has different timeline/experience with their favorite rock bands. Strong bands are able to forge different eras. KISS are ultimately a strong band that has built something genuinely special over 50 years. New technology alarms some people; others get excited about the new realm of possibilities. As a KISS fan who came into their experience during the 1980s I can confirm that they had great musicians/ shows/songs/albums post---1970s. I saw several tours starting with Asylum. Avatars present a way to experience them in a whole new way. This is true immortality. I am onboard with it!

I mean, it'll be computer generated images of a band from what will be long ago (like us today listening to Robert Johnson or Bing Crosby), that isn't putting out new music. So, what's the grab? While other bands are starting to do avatars and virtual concerts. So, this is not new. I can't see this as being anything amazing. I mean, how does Avatar Kiss compete against other avatars that are putting out new music? While anyone who becomes a Kiss fan will want an avatar of Peter & Ace~!

Michael, I’m so torn with this! On one hand I see the state of today’s music business and the current artists that are out there and it makes me wanna puke. So call me an old fogie, but I want the great rock ‘n’ roll artists from my youth to still go on forever. I want to see Beatles music live, I want to see great power, pop live, I want to see awesome classic rock live. But unfortunately, all my heroes are aging out or passing away. So what is left?…just tribute bands, cover bands, or avatars! On the other hand, however, I see avatar shows as the destruction of live pure music in its best form. We eventually get nothing but avatars and special light show presentations with pre-recorded tracks, and no live playing in concert settings? Who knows! This seems bad. Or we can get into current, younger, rock bands like The Midnight Callers and put them in the mainstream instead of struggling underground! Yeah they actually play their instruments and sing great rock n roll LIVE!!!!! What a concept!! Cheers 🍻 Matt
