Michael, great to get your take on Denny’s importance to Wings. His consistent presence throughout their career (and all of his key contributions) gave them further credibility. He was stable, loyal, and one of the great utility players of 70s arena rock. I always enjoyed when he took center stage during the Rockshow concert film and his songs always lent further depth and variety to the Wings albums, which somehow keep aging better and better for me with time. He will be missed. Btw, thanks for the mention. So glad you changed your mind, esp as a huge fellow Wings fan! ❤

You know, this was one of the easiest videos I ever filmed Bruce! And that’s because I am such a huge McCartney & Wings fan, I have read almost every single book published about them more than once! All I had to do was belt out the facts through general memory brother! Denny was always as important to Wings as McCartney himself in my estimation, and as proof, when he was out, so was Wings! Always Glad to mention you Bruce! BTW every body I have a link to Bruces video on Denny Laine in my description box!❤❤❤

Well said Michael !!!! Denny Laine was a VERY talented musician. Multi instrumentalist. Vocals, harmony vocals, guitar, lead guitar, organ, piano, bass guitar, synthesiser, percussion. His contribution to Wings cannot be understated!! He also contributed far more to the songwriting & arranging than people realise. And his signature song "Go Now" - his vocals are just something else. R.I.P. Denny, a fabulous musician!!

My first concert was Wings in 1976. That was the first time I heard "Go Now" and thought it was a new song from an upcoming album, lol. It is thanks to Mull of Kintyre that I started my musical journey and I know that Denny Laine was decisive in bringing that song about. Indeed I didn't realise that Paul McCartney was part of this supergroup called the Beatles. I think Denny Laine helped Paul settle down as an Ex-Beatle. By-the-Way, that Paul does more Beatles nowadays I think is due to him ageing. RIP Denny Laine, thank you!

Thank you for giving time to recognizing Denny's talents. He played and sang on some of the biggest records in the 1970's, it's too bad he didn't get more recognition. My sister was 11 years older than me, and I was born in October 1963 right before Beatlemania hit America. I literally cut my teeth on Beatles records! But when I was a teenager and able to collect my own records, I was into all of the ex-Beatles, but Wings especially. In those days, I didn't buy singles, I was into LPs and would listen to them all the way through usually. I really liked Denny's songwriting and vocals, he made the Wings records a 'group effort' by his contributions instead of just being a yes man to Paul. As you mentioned, "Spirits of Ancient Egypt" is great, but I also loved "Time To Hide" and "Deliver Your Children". By the way, if you have time, check out the KZread channel "Beatles Forever". The woman who does that had a series of videos on Wings not too long ago that was quite good.

And it has to be said out loud...Denny stayed with McCartney while being painfully underpaid. Henry and Denny S. left over money woes, Jimmy McCullough wasn't happy about his paycheck and felt he'd reached his limited pinnacle in Wings and even though the excuse was given that Joe English missed home, he was also unhappy about his paycheck. Hell, this goes back to Mal Evan's days where he never got more than 40 pounds a week for all his work. Denny Laine, for all of his musical talents, should be remembered for his loyalty. He stated many times that he didn't make a living from records, he depended on his paycheck from touring. That's what hit hard for him and the other Wings musicians when McCartney got busted in Japan. All of them were depending heavily on the touring money. There was no sovereigns pay when that fell apart. Denny was basically poor when he passed. But he was the ONE GUY who stayed loyal to McCartney.

Researchers conjecture that William Shepherd/Campbell (aka "Billy Shears"), in addition to having been the primary musician who assumed the lifetime role of "Paul McCartney" after the 1966 demise of original biological Paul McCartney, also performed as the original Phil Ackrill in the band The Diplomats. That is why when Billy/"Paul" was putting together Wings, he called upon Denny Laine to join the band - - the two musicians already had a friendship and working relationship going back to their time together in The Diplomats during the early 1960's. (Viewers can briefly see Billy/Phil/"Paul" in his natural appearance - - no wig, no facial hair, no latex - - sitting in the back of the bus in the 1967 Beatles film Magical Mystery Tour.) Except for an occasion or two when an interviewer had plied him with alcohol, Denny did a pretty good job throughout the years of safeguarding Billy's biggest secret - - even after the two of them had experienced a falling out - - and the few truth bombs he allowed to slip through were always spoken masterfully subject to the listener's preferred interpretation. Perhaps with Denny's passing and the inevitable renewed public interest in his career, EMI Records (an adjunct to the British military-intelligence complex) will finally see fit to release the completed Diplomats album that has been kept unheard and sequestered in their vaults for over 50 years.

Great comments, subscribed! Not only is it a shame that Denny has passed, but I think it's an even bigger shame that Paul has done, as you mentioned, less and less Wings material in concert and more Beatles. Not to take anything away, of course, from the Beatles, but honestly I don't think Paul gets the recognition he deserves for Wings...there were so many great songs in that band and certainly great members too, of which Denny and yes, even Linda certainly, were integral members. All one has to do is watch their Rockshow concert from 1976 to know what I'm talking about...and as a tribute to now the late great, Denny Laine, that's even more of a reason to check it out. RIP

Denny Laine was involved in Paul's greatest post Beatles success. Without Denny Laine it could be argued Wings would have been in more choppy creative waters if you look at Paul's post Denny work. On top of that, it appears Paul McCartney may not have been the easiest person to work with post Beatles as Eric Stewart, of 10cc, briefly had Denny's role with Paul but bolted. Denny Laine put in 10 years side by side with Paul and had a lot to do with his post Beatles success in Wings. I thought Paul calling Denny an acquaintance was an odd choice of a word in his statement on Denny's passing which I think means Paul could be distant even when you work closely with him and I suspect Denny Laine was very adaptable to working with an international superstar which is not easy.

Before Denny passed away there was a Go Fund Me for his medical care, apparently it is common for musicians to overlook getting medical insurance. The target amount has still not been reached. Is it possible Paul did not know about Denny's failing health? Or the Go Fund Me which he could have easily paid for his old bandmate and friend?

I wouldn't know as I won't listen to him. He was at his post-Beatles peak when he was with Denny. I guess Denny finally had to 'Go Now'. @@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine I actually prefer it over the original version. In the original, he gets too close to the mic and during high points in the song, the sound distorts. I absolutely love Wings Over America. Loved it since I first heard it at age 11 (1976).

Denny was mad at Paul for blowing a huge payday in Japan and a long tour to follow. The band made money from playing live. Paul's bust meant no shows were going to happen. So Denny spoke out. It's a tough spot to be put in by Paul's foolish decision.

It's too bad Paul didn't do any more writing or playing with Denny. Denny felt close to Paul, but it may not have been reciprocated.

Was Penny Lane song title inspired in any way by Denny Laine? I'm aware there is a location called Penny Lane but always wondered if the title had another association.
