Once again, Gene Simmons is dead on target. He's pretty much echoing what the late U.S. Senator S.I. Hayakawa, from California said 30 years or so ago: "Bilingualism is o.k. for an individual, not for a country".

Gene is absolutely right. There are people living in this country who can't speak English at all. It makes communicating very difficult. I had someone show up in the drive thru at work the other night who couldn't understand that we were closed for the night. I told this guy FOUR TIMES and he still didn't understand. If you intend to live in a country where they speak a different language, then you should make an effort to speak that language. In some countries like Canada, you have to learn and understand the language spoken there in order to qualify to become a citizen.

I agree, I live in Miami and I feel like I am in another country. It should be a requirement to become an American citizen to speak fluent English. I don't care if anyone has an accent but they should speak our native language. When we visit other countries we either take a class to learn some of the language or we bring a dictionary. We don't expect people in countries we visit to speak any language but their own. I worry if I have an emergency when I am out working or shopping that nobody will understand what I am saying. I love diversity in our country and have friends of different nationalities. I lived in Boston most of my adult life, it is a very diverse population there and everyone spoke English. We have to require immigrants to assimilate. I am Jewish and I read Hebrew and primarily listen to Hebrew music but I wouldn't play it in the company of people who don't understand it.

The interviewer reminds me of Piers Morgan. When you go to LIVE in another country, just learn the language so you won't be lost. Gene makes complete sense. He's not saying ONLY LEARN ENGLISH, just have it stored with the other languages you know. If you're from France & only speak French, learn some English before coming to America. THIS APPLIES TO VACATIONS AS WELL. LEARN HOW TO SPEAK THE NATIVE LANGUAGE.

My mother was born in 54 in Monterrey down deep in Mexico. Her family then slowly immigrated to Nuevo Laredo, then Laredo Tx. Eventually to west Texas Pecos. Years later my mum made it to Odessa. My mother lived through prejudice and sexism during the 70s 80s and 90s. She had a son in the 70s and then had me in the 90s. No husbands. No welfare. She had to work 2 jobs before she became a registered beauty technician then barber after that. She learned and perfected her English through watching her favorite American soap operas, movies, and music, when she could she would read english all with the help of two huge books of Spanish to English & English to Spanish translations. My mother was a smart immigrant a dedicated Americana. To think Texas is home to so many Latinos who make so many excuses to not learn English after living in this country for decades a damned travesty. Gene is absolutely right.

My grandparents left Europe because of World War 1 and Communism. My grandfather's native tongue was Czech. My grandmother's native tongue was Ukrainian. Yet, after immigrating legally, my grandparents settled in New Jersey, got jobs, and learned English. The Slavic languages are among the hardest languages to learn. The Slavic languages my grandparents spoke were far more dissimilar to English than Spanish was. Yet, despite often having to work up to 12 hours a day, and raising two children, my grandparents made time to learn English, and attended weekly English classes. They were proud of becoming Americans, and brought up their children to become responsible, productive citizens.

I don't think you have to go out of your way to lose your accent but learning the language if you're going to live here only makes it easier for you. I applaud anyone that has because most Americans only know one language and even that one we don't do too well on. You will know two and I find that an amazing undertaking.

Umm, I don't know where you live, but it's standard for kids to learn another language in school now. It has been for awhile as when I grew up it was that way and I learned another language starting in first grade, which I learned all the way through high school and then chose to continue it in college (which most colleges have language classes for kids to continue their language courses or start learning yet another language, meaning they would be starting on their 3rd language!!). Even my Mother had language courses in her schooling, which was during the 50's & 60's. However, I don't think it was as standard then as it is now. All the schools in my area, public and private, have language courses as standard. Some schools only have 1 language as an option (mainly public schools), whereas others they have options for the parents to chose which they want their child to learn. Not to mention a lot of families in the US speak the language of their family roots, we're all immigrants here.

  • @gamesmaster35v2

Mariah Longest It's not standard where I am. That's South Carolina. I try to keep up through my nieces and nephews and while they introduce them to higher math a lot earlier than they did for my generation, a extra language isn't something they've been pounding into them. Around here it starts to become an elective somewhere around the 7th or 8th grade and you can continue to learn it your 9-12th grade years. Which I think is a huge step in the right direction. Back when I was going you had a extra language as a elective starting about 9th grade and could take a follow up class in the following years. More years to learn it and get it drilled into your skull where you don't forget it sounds like the right way to go so if your area is doing that great!

@@mariahlongest7465 I have never heard of this, and I grew up in Louisiana. We had language as an option beginning in High School (9th grade - 12th grade). In college, it's common to take two years of a language for a degree; however, many people opt to take ASL (American Sign Language) to fill that requirement, as it is fun, and much easier as a beginner (b/c it IS still English), but it is obviously not a spoken language, so wouldn't be counted as one in this context.

I wish some Immigrants who live currently in Australia would adopt the same principles. You referred to the words ' whats up" , well I also agree. I believe the correct use of words should be ' what is going on with you today and how are you?. I think he's right. I think immigrants should learn to speak English, not for our sake, but for their sake. Since English is the primary language spoken in public in America, it would be really beneficial to learn the language. Don't get me wrong, I'm not of "Immigrants, speak English!" kind of person. This is America. You have the right to speak any language you want, especially in your own home. My grandpa's parents were from Slovakia. The only language my grandpa spoke until the age of 4 was Slovak. However, he and his siblings spoke English as their primary language when they got older. Also, with today's technology and resources, it's easier now to learn English than it was back then.

@@poiewhfopiewhf The youtube app has translation features. All gene is saying is that to truly assimilate and fit into the country you have to learn English. Otherwise, your ability to navigate and simply live in the States will be difficult. It’s fine to not know english when you start immigrating here. However, if you don’t learn English it’s very hard to manage yourself in society. Communication is very important

My parents came from Asia (different countries, both of them) to live a better life and prosper. Both had to 'Learn Goddamned English" because its what got them by. Thats how my dad became an RN, that's how i'm getting an education, in an English speaking environment. Certain things DO need to be multilingual though I will admit. Hospitals being one of them.

The real question would be: how old was this dude when he came to America. If he was just a child, then obviously it'd be easy to learn the language while also getting ride of the accent. lol now if he was 30 and did it (which I doubt), then that would be impressive. Don't judge others, you don't know who they are or what they've been through.

+Eric Waldron (Queremos Salud) But everyone judges everyone constantly, and it is human nature to do so. It's a preservation instinct, and it's an essential part of both our sense of self and our ego. Explain this to me: Why is it wrong to judge, and what is so bad about being judged? You will never please everyone no matter what you say, do, or believe - and you will therefore always be judged. A person's opinion has only the power and weight that you assign to it. Part of what's wrong with this country, and what Gene is talking about when he mentions "the politically correct climate", is that you're basically saying that simply because your Utopian ideals state that nobody should judge anybody else, that other people shouldn't have access to their constitutional right to freedom of speech. In other words, you'd say that it's okay for people to speak whatever language they want, but that it's not okay for someone to believe differently than you, and if they do, then they are wrong (a judgment)? It's either okay to be different or it is not - and the ones who divide one subset of difference from another to say that one is okay while another is not are the ones who are truly discriminate. This is the kind of slick lawyer-speak rhetoric that has become so common among those both fully committed to their hypocrisy, and blissfully unaware of it.

Alot of people need to see this today. I don't care if people speak there own language. But if you live in America you have to know how to speak English! If myself or someone talks to you. You need to be able to know what we're saying. It makes life so much easier. I don't know how to speak French or Spanish but I have no intention on going to either country if I did I would try to actually learn the fucking language.

Blanca M Bonazzi Bonaca Just noticed your name. You realize he was talking about us Italo-americani when he said "Yo, How ya doin'?" I'm not offended, as it's true. In middle America, talking like you just left one of the 5 Burroughs, is frowned upon. I know from experience. Before I went to College, I had a heavy accent. The generation with the thick, traditional accent of their native tongue, was my Grandparent's. I can speak 3 languages now, so it opens more door's, career wise. Maybe you'll agree, maybe not. Just figured I'd get your opinion, since you're name suggests Italian descent.

My name is "borrowed" but that has nothing to do with the way I feel about this dirtbag. No doubt more languages and more education opens doors, and the accent should not matter. What matters is that not all of us have the opportunity, or the time like Simmons to study a language. We cannot hold everybody to our standards. We all do in this life what we can to make a better life. To some, making a better life means different things. To some it means to have enough food and shelter. To others, become wealthy. We need to respect that. Simmons is not the best example because he lives off the very people he criticizes.

I work in retail and these hispanic women don't even understand if I ask them "do you have a return or purchase?' or "would you like to purchase a bag for your items?" I've always loved KISS. But I've generally been disgusted with Gene's political views (especially since he occasionally degenerates himself into a FOX "news" puppet). But for Christ's fucking sack, he makes a real good point here ! I've had a number of jobs where the majority of the workers primarily speak Spanish (which is fine as I'm half Hispanic myself). But everyone should at least be able to understand the same language for the meeting at the beginning of the shift (or there is chaos like the retarded biblical story about "the tower of babel").
